Notes From Tina
(tina@arthritisinsight.com)

Welcome to all the new members that have joined us this week! During my busy week last week I may have missed some emails. If you sent me an email and didn't get a response?resend it. I promise to answer this time!

My sister was married this weekend in a beautiful poolside ceremony. She was gorgeous and her groom was very handsome, a storybook wedding with a happily ever after ending as they rode away in the horse drawn carriage. I know by the way that they look at each other that this is a match made in heaven, it will last forever (It better because I am not making centerpieces again, twice is enough!) I should have a couple of pictures up in the Arthritis Insight Photo Album sometime this week.

Friday night at the family dinner, I got to meet my sister's new mother-in-law, Bonnie, fellow RAer, Arthritis Insight Member and a great person. We did some RA bonding, taking shoes off and checking out each other's joints, those things that only gimps do together. And something that doesn't happen that often, it is always nice to know we aren't alone in this thing called arthritis! Bonnie, it was very nice meeting you and I look forward to seeing you again! It's so nice to have another gimp in the family! *grin*

Yesterday my mom & dad, my kids, my nieces and my husband and I went canoeing. I love going and everyone is very good about making sure I don't have to paddle. We beached the canoes for a picnic lunch and were getting ready to head back out into the river, when I tipped our canoe! I was trying to move from the front of the canoe to the back, my husband said, "Bend down and hold on to the sides of the canoe as you walk." HELLO! Bend down, hold on and walk all at the same time? I don't think so!! My body doesn't move that way! So over we went! Of course everyone in the other canoes got a big laugh out of it! I gotta admit, I know I looked very funny. And the giggles continued for the rest of the day! Since I got my shoes and brace wet I squeaked with every step?I am still squeaking this morning!

Enough squeaking from me, here's Roooooonie:

Ron's Ramblin's
(ron@arthritisinsight.com)

I was just sitting here pondering how many of us would be left on this site if the 3 disease rule were rigidly enforced. For those of you who are not familiar with the 3 disease rule, it simply states that no one on this site is allowed to have more than three diseases at any one time. If by chance you should contract more than three diseases, it is your duty to attempt to pass the excess on to those less fortunate than you who might have only one or two diseases. If you are unable to do this, then you must return the excess to their originating source (if you can still find them). This game gets to be kind of like the old cooties game you played in grade school (OK, and now in the chat room) where you can only give the disease back if they don't already have the limit. If you attempt to give a disease to someone who is already over the limit, then you have to take one of theirs, which means you have to try even harder to get rid of some. There is one other way that you can get rid of the excess diseases. That is you can convince someone to voluntarily take some from you and that brings us to the crux of this article. You see I am over the limit and need to distribute four or five diseases. Any one wishing to volunteer to take one or more of these off my hands please feel free to contact me and we will make arrangements for you to pick it (them) up. The point of this, if there is ever a point to my ramblins, is that we need to keep supporting each other. You never know, the next person you talk with may be willing to lighten your load a bit.

Your Weekly Giggle

Okay, this is really bad, and I am sorry if anyone is offended, but I love it! That will be me in 50 years!

There were three old ladies sitting on a park bench talking amongst themselves when a flasher came by.

The flasher stood right in front of them and opened his trench coat.

Well, the first old lady had a stroke.

Then, the second old lady had a stroke.

The third old lady had arthritis and couldn't reach that far.

Check out all the jokes at /fun/jokes/index.html. Send yours in today!

Tina's Tips

Arthritis can affect your ability to do even the simplest of tasks. I've heard some people say, "Accept your limitations." I'm not sure accepting them is the way to go. I prefer to challenge those limitations, work around them, finding alternate ways of achieving the same goal. Every week I'll share some tips I've found to work around those annoying limitations and I hope all of you will send in your tips too. We may not be the next Martha Stewart, but sometimes the simplest things can help so much.

Here's a tip and a request for help from Diane:

Dusting - I hate it cause it causes great pain holding arms up dusting things just a little bit high my arms tire very quickly and start to hurt in less than a minute. My spouse brought this box of fussy things to clean anywhere tiny one is great for keyboard, there was one large light one that has an extension so it has a long handle, I use it to dust low places so I don't have to bend or squat or get down on my knees anymore. I do sit in a chair when possible any thing to save my energy then when the furniture needs polishing my daughter does this once in a great while, I hate to have to ask people to do things for me so I am constantly asking myself is there some way that I might be able to do this an easier and safe way so I won't tire or make myself sore and cause pain. I do ask my daughter to dust things that I would have to hold arms up I haven't been able to find any other solution. If you know any please submit them.

So folks any ideas for Diane? How do you dust things that are up high?

This one is from Tina:

When I saw my ankle surgeon on Wednesday he told me I could expect this post-op swelling for at least 6 months. He told me to get some good compression stockings. I don't know about you, but compression hose just don't go with my fashion choices! So I went to the medical supply store and checked out what they had. I ended up buying several pairs of Juzo Lite Line Support Socks For Men and am very happy with them. They aren't cheap, but what about arthritis is cheap? They come in many colors and look like men's dress socks or women's tights. They brought down the swelling and feel great on the legs.

Advice for Better Living
This week's question:
My hands hurt too much to hold a book and I want to read! Does anyone have any suggestions of how to read sitting on the couch or lying down without having to use your hands so much? I can't sit at a desk very long.
Ok folks, help us out!

Expert Advice:
I'm a 57 year old woman diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in late '94. During one of my first visits, I asked my rheumatologist about exercise for rheumatoid arthritis. She replied "exercise whenever you feel like it" and didn't offer any information on range of motion exercises, etc. After nearly six years, I'm still uncertain as to when and how to exercise. I've always tended to push myself beyond my limits but have tried to avoid doing so since developing RA. Could you give me some suggestions about when I should exercise and what exercises I could do? I currently have RA in both feet, both hands, both wrists, and left shoulder. I've visited the Arthritis Foundation site, but their only option is to order books from their site. I'm on low income and live alone and cannot afford to spend money on books which may turn out not to be helpful.

What's Coming?
Next week's Featured Discussion will be Tests & Diagnostic Procedures! We'll try to untangle that confusing mess! We'd like to hear from you, please take a minute to fill out our survey: /feature/survey.html

We're thrilled to tell you about an upcoming addition to Arthritis Insight. We know we need a place for teens and twentysomethings with arthritis to hang out. Their needs tend to be just a little different from the rest of us. We spoke to Aaron Nelson, creator of JRAworld.com and he's agreed to join Arthritis Insight! We'll be moving the whole JRAworld site over here and adding a bunch of new features. Aaron will be the Administrator, so you can rest assured it's going to be a wonderful place. Look for the move to happen sometime this month!

What do you want to see on Arthritis Insight or in the Newsletter? Let us know and we'll do our best to accommodate!

Arthritis Insight Chat /community/chat/

Our Monday night chat this week was with Amy Wright P.T. Amy answered our questions about arthritis and exercise. The transcript is posted at /community/chat/july102000.html

Please join us Monday July 17th at 9:30 pm Eastern time. Dr. Barry Waters will join us once again. This time he'll answer our questions about Tests & Diagnostic Procedures.

The complete chat schedule can be found at /community/chat/schedule.html.

We need a few chat hosts. A host is responsible for welcoming everyone to the room and making folks feel at home. It really isn't a difficult job and it is only for an hour a week. If anyone would like to volunteer to host a chat, we'd be happy to have you. Just send us an email saying what time and day of the week you'd like to host and a little about yourself.

Cooking With Char!

Hello everyone!! The weather continues hot and muggy here in the heartland. And today we have thunderstorms rolling through the area. Like many of you, weather seems to affect how I feel. And this isn't a good day.

But this is supposed to be a cooking column, so lets get started.
I am sure that many of you have memories of your mother, or grandmother making homemade noodles. The kind you buy in a bag in the grocery store, just are not the same. And the ones you buy from the frozen food section of your supermarket are made in huge quantities in factories. And the things that go on in those places would curl your hair.

But never fear. They are easy to do at home. All you need are eggs and flour and little bit of water. The biggest ingredient you need is time, and really not that much time.

Old Fashioned Homemade Egg Noodles
For a single family sized pot of beef and noodles or chicken and noodles, you need
2-3 eggs
2-3 tbs. of water
mix together with a fork or hand held mixer
add enough flour until you have soft dough
At this point you should probably stop using a mixer and start using your hands
Add enough flour so that dough becomes fairly stiff and is not sticky
Using a rolling pin (just roll with your hands flat on the rolling pin. No gripping necessary)
Roll the dough on a floured surface
Roll until thin
Cut rolled dough into 4 pieces
Stack pieces with straight edges together
Cut thin strips of dough
Sprinkle noodles with flour and toss
Let noodles dry for about an hour or more
These freeze very well

How about a quick crock pot recipe? This one is very very easy.
In a crock pot, layer chicken (Any pieces. I usually use the cheapest aviailable, although boneless chicken breasts, make it a little fancier.)
Sliced onion
Sliced potatoes
Sliced green pepper
1 lb. pkg. of baby carrots
1/2 tsp. or garlic powder (or to taste. I use more)
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can of water
Set temp on lo. Come back 4 or more hrs later and dinner is ready.
It doesn't get much easier than that.

If you have recipes you want to share or have comments or suggestions you would like to make about the column address them to Char@arthritisinsight.com. If you have a special dish you would like to make or are looking for, let me know, I will see what I can do.

Notes and Insights:

From Donna:
October Happening In Ohio
DATE CHANGE!
When...October 12-15
Place...Wooster, Ohio
Easy access from Cleveland Hopkins or Akron/Canton Airports
I will be planning some things to do, but meeting each other personally will be the best "happening."

A few suggestions for day trips will be a tour of the Amish country with lunch at an Amish restaurant; Lehman's Hardware, a nationally know hardware (sounds dull, but it isn't); Football Hall of Fame in Canton; shopping [for Marsha's pleasure); and last but not least, you will meet our leaders, KJ, IndyRon, and Kimmy! What more could you ask for?

Make your reservations by E-mailing me at Luyenne@aol.com.

Note from Tina: I've been lucky enough to attend several get togethers with my online support pals. All of them have been incredible, unforgettable experiences. Most times I felt like I had known these people all my life, which is pretty amazing considering I'd never met them in person before. Imagine a whole group of people who understand your pain, people who walk with a limp, just like you. If you are able, I encourage you to come to Ohio this fall!

It's a Baby Shower!

Many of you know that Amy, AKA Lake Goddess is very impatiently awaiting that phone call that will send her to China to pick up her new baby daughter. We're going to host a Cyber Baby Shower!
When: Thursday July 27th at 9pm Eastern time
Where: The Arthritis Insight Chatroom.
RSVP: Krissyjo@aol.com or kelly@idmail.com

A Closing Thought

Listen
When I ask you to listen to me
and you start giving advice
you have not done what I asked.
When I ask you to listen to me
and you begin to tell me why
I shouldn't feel that way
you are trampling on my feelings.
When I ask you to listen to me
and you feel you have to do something
to solve my problem
you have failed me, strange as that may seem.
So please listen and just hear me.
and, if you want to talk,
wait a minute for your turn;
and I'll listen to you.
