Notes From Tina
(tina@arthritisinsight.com)

Hi everyone! We've gotten a lot of new members this week so I thought it was time to explain the name thing again. (old members skip to the next paragraph!) I'm sure many of you have seen the names Tina, KJ and KrissyJo in numerous places on Arthritis Insight. They are all the same person, me! No, I don't have multiple personalities; at least I don't think so. My birth name is Kristina Jo; I go by Tina in the "real" world. Many years ago, before RA, I chose KrissyJo as my AOL screen name. I had no idea what my future held for me and that I would soon be an active participant in the internet arthritis community. KrissyJo stuck, so here I am!

Ok, old members, you can start reading again here! I want to thank you for the outpouring of support we received last week after the chatroom problems. It sure is nice to know that so many of you respect and support our decisions. We truly appreciate it!

The week after next we are planning a series of mini vacations in my family, I am quite sure I will be close to death by the end of the week! We are going to Sea World on Sunday, luckily it is only 30 minutes from my house. The we'll be leaving early Monday morning for Cedar Point, will spend the night there and go to the park for two days. Come home late Tuesday night and leave early Thursday morning for two days at Salt Fork, a State Park. Any amusement park and vacation tips for gimps will be greatly appreciated! I'll need all the help I can get! But don't tell me not to ride the roller coasters! That's the best part of Cedar Point!

Ron's Ramblin's
(ron@arthritisinsight.com)

Maybe today should be Ron's Whining instead of Ron's Ramblins. But I have got to get if off my chest. I don't know how may of you are tied up in this little game that Physicians seem to be playing. It is kind of like the old spin the bottle game. If they cannot fully document and diagnose your problem, they spin you around and send you on your way to the next expert. This cycle continues until armed with about 10 pounds of Lab results and 25 pounds of x-rays you end up back at the Primary Care Physician you started with. He or she looks through all this documentation, scratches their head a bit and says hmmmmmmm a lot. Then guess what they do. First they decide that the documentation that they have in not nearly heavy enough to be conclusive so they send you for more tests. When these come back, they can then decide that your problem is not in their area of expertise and ship you off into that vicious circle again.

Maybe, just as a thought, the medical profession should think about a specialty call patient coordinator. Someone who can and will take the time to work with you, decide what is necessary and whether or not you really need to see someone else. I know that the specialists think that this is the job of the PCP, but guess what, generally the PCP is so busy treating colds, flu symptoms and general physical ailments that they do not have the time to "analyze" all the documentation in your chart.

I know this is a pipe dream, but wouldn't it be nice.

Your Weekly Giggle

10 Things to Do in a Doctor's Office

1) Blow your nose and show it to others
2) Squeeze a packet of ketchup out and scream that you're bleeding to death
3) Faint, then get up walk over to a particularily sick looking person and faint in their lap
4) Ask the person next to you what an exposed kidney stone looks like
5) Show them a rock and say it came from your kidney
6) Pretend to throw up in your hat then ask someone to hold your hat for you
7) Ask 'is it my turn yet?' every 10 seconds
8) Tell the person next to you (graphically) how babies are made
9) Ask the receptionist for your next patient, saying you are Dr. Love
10) Go in and complain to the doctor how long you waited in the waiting room, then protest his diagnosis, refuse to pay then storm out screaming 'I'll get you... and your little nurse too!'

Check out all the jokes at /fun/jokes/index.html. Send yours in today!

Tina's Tips

Arthritis can affect your ability to do even the simplest of tasks. I've heard some people say, "Accept your limitations." I'm not sure accepting them is the way to go. I prefer to challenge those limitations, work around them, finding alternate ways of achieving the same goal. Every week I'll share some tips I've found to work around those annoying limitations and I hope all of you will send in your tips too. We may not be the next Martha Stewart, but sometimes the simplest things can help so much.

From Kuch:
Hi, I have fond several uses for the rubber shelf and drawer liner if you have grip problems with you hands a little piece of it work wonders to grip onto bottle caps. I put it around say a jar of jam and hold it between my legs sitting down and use a jar opener, have not found a jar I can not open that way, also put a good size piece of it on the floor foot size and slide your socks on. I don't have strength in my hands this really works. My daughter uses it under her dining room chair cushions to keep them from sliding, I'm sure there are many uses for it. I keep a small piece on my kitchen sink for when I need to grip anything. Hope this will help someone. I know I don't have to watch the jars of stuff I buy anymore.

And from Ron:
Variation of the rice sock: Every kitchen has one or more of those oven mitts floating around. Drop a boiling bag of rice in and seal with velcro or snap. It is small and molds to odd shapes and feels really good.
The complete instructions for rice socks are at: /living/ricesock.html

Advice for Better Living
I was diagnosed 6 months ago with RA. I too find it extremely painful at times but I was fortunate enough to be referred to a wonderful rheumatologist and the treatment he is using (Arava) seems to be working so far. I was also put on prednisone after much resistance but an inability to tolerate the initial pain, but am gradually being weaned from that (down to 2 milligrams!!!). I am being told I should apply for disability but do not want a long drawn out fight with Social Security. Can someone out there tell me of their experience with this. I hate to call myself "disabled" because I'm determined not to give in to the disease, but I am slowing down quite a bit and it is affecting my income significantly. Can someone give me some advice/tips on this or tell me of their experience with applying for disability. Thanks.
OK Folks! Let's help this person out! What happened at your first rheumatologist appointment? Please share your SSDI experience with us.

Expert Advice:
I am a very healthy male of 51, I have not needed to see a doctor since my last physical 5 years ago. The only problem I have has been in the mornings beginning the last month - my right shoulder hurts when I get up. The shoulder exhibits a sharp pain until I rotate it around, then it immediately goes away! If I rest it for an hour or more (take a nap), then the pain comes back. If I am active all day, there is never any pain, I can lift anything, move normally, paddle a canoe for four hours (last weekend), etc. The next morning it hurts again! I do not feel that it is swollen or anything.
Could this be the beginning of the dreaded arthritis? :)

Arthritis Insight Chat /community/chat/

Monday's Men's Health Chat with Walt Hanks went very well. We had not planned on posting the transcript, figuring there would be some sensitive issues discussed and the men involved would want them left private. However, all the men that participated wanted the transcript posted, they hope it encourages other men to open up and talk about their problems. The transcript is posted at /community/chat/july31200.html . But be warned, some of the conversation is in regard to sexual issues.

On Monday August 7th it will be the girl's turn! Dr. Susan Hoch will be in to discuss Women's Health. NO GUYS ALLOWED!

The complete chat schedule can be found at /community/chat/schedule.html
With the addition of JRA World to Arthritis Insight, we've added two new chats. Tuesdays at 10pm Eastern JRAWHostJeff will host Young Adults with Arthritis support chat. And every Thursday at 10pm Eastern we'll have Growing Up With Arthritis, for kids, teens, and adults who are growing up or have grown up with arthritis hosted by JRAWHostAaron.

Cooking With Char!

Hello! Hello! Another week of summer has come and gone. And before we know it, it will be time for back to school. There are 6 teachers in my family and they all have to go back to school on the 15th to begin preparation for their students. Gosh this summer has gone quickly!!

Before we get started, let me remind you that I asked for recipes using the fresh produce available this time of year, especially zucchini. Come on folks. I have not yet received one zucchini recipe!! So let's get crackin'! Send me those zucchini recipes

Here is a really simple one to get you started.

Peel tomatoes by dipping for a few seconds in boiling water, then dropping immediately in cold water. Then the skins will just come right off.

In a pan-put peeled tomatoes (larger tomatoes will need to be cut into chunks)
zucchini cut into slices
and garlic to taste
Salt and pepper to taste (but be careful tomatoes have a lot of natural sodium. Taste before you salt)

That is all there is to it. Couldn't be easier. Amounts are not important. Use what ever you have. For a variation add some green pepper to the pot.

Now here is a Summer Salad recipe from a reader. Thank you Dorothy.
Summer Salad
Serves 8 or more
Early morning or day before serving, cook 12 ounces small shell pasta, drain and toss in a bowl with a cup of your favorite "creamy" salad dressing.
(Garlic flavor not the best with this)
Hard boil 5-6 eggs, peel and place on top pf pasta, cover bowl and place in 'fridge to marinate several hours or over night.
Night before, put 2 large cans salmon or 4 small cans water packed tuna into fridge to chill.
Then add to marinated pasta: 2 cups cherry tomatoes sliced in halves: 2 cups coarsely chopped celery; 1 large or 2 small cans of black olives, drained; & coarsely chopped boiled eggs.
Add 1 cup salad dressing like Miracle Whip, to the pasta mixture and toss gently. Use more than 1 cup if more moisture is desired. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Drain salmon or tuna, gently break into chunks and add to salad. As gently as you can, toss the fish with the pasta mix.
Serve cold on top of lettuce with lemon slices.
Keeps several days in fridge. Use covered bowl.
Add more or less of your favorite ingredients. This is a flexible salad.

If you have questions or comments, feel free to send them to me at Char@arthritisinsight.com . And don't forget to send me your favorite recipe!!

Life and Laughter with Arthritis
(ron@arthritisinsight.co
m )

I know that each of us has been subjected to some embarrassing moment that is directly related to our arthritis. I believe that one of the best healing tools that we have is the ability to laugh at ourselves. By being able to do this and share it with others, perhaps we can bring a little hope and sunshine into someone's life. It can be anything from spilling your soft drink (almost said coke but knew KJ wouldn't print it) on your keyboard because your hands just couldn't hold it to tripping some poor old lady with your cane to the "run in" with the person about you taking the handicap parking spot. Just to get it started, I will give you an example, and I know that there are lots of better ones out there.

I am still extremely self conscious about the knee brace that I have to wear. So I try to cover and disguise it in any way that I can. Well, one day not long ago, I had just gotten home and as usual had changed from my work clothes into a pair of shorts and a tee shirt. About the time I got this done, the doorbell rang. I slipped on my house shoes and went down to see who it was. I opened the door and there was a friend that I hadn't seen in a while. I could see by the look oh his face that he was trying not to laugh at this guy with shorts, a tee shirt, house shoes, black socks, one with a knee length white athletic sock underneath it and this ugly brace. Well, there was nothing else I could do but burst out laughing at the ridiculous looking spectacle I presented. I was embarrassed but after we had a good laugh (and I had time to finish changing clothes) things turned out fine. We ended up going to my favorite Chinese restaurant and catching up on old times.

I know that there are a lot of much better stories out there if you will just share them with us. We will try to put one or two in the newsletter each week.

A Closing Thought

What Arthritis Cannot Do

Arthritis is so limited...
It cannot cripple Love
It cannot shatter Hope
It cannot corrode Faith
It cannot destroy Peace
It cannot kill Friendship
It cannot suppress Memories
It cannot silence Courage
It cannot invade the Soul
It cannot steal eternal Life
It cannot conquer the Spirit
