Notes From Tina
(tina@arthritisinsight.com)

Howdy ya'll! Hope everyone had a great week!
Mine was?well?interesting. Thursday and Friday was our trip to Salt Fork State Park and it rained the entire time we were there. Luckily the resort had a game room, indoor pool and other activities for the kids and a bar for the Moms! The park was absolutely gorgeous. We had deer begging for food under our balcony, a family of skunks playing at dusk, a bat in the hallway and raccoon prints on our second floor deck in the morning. Just wished the sun would have been shining so we could have enjoyed nature without getting wet!

I've had some episodes the last couple of days of vomiting blood. Do you think they will ever make arthritis medications that don't have some effect on the stomach? Nothing like taking meds for one problem and creating another! I saw the GI doctor yesterday and I get to be scoped next week. Oh what fun!! I have orders from my doctor to go straight to ER if the bleeding worsens or I experience any additional symptoms. So don't worry about me, I am watching carefully and will act quick if needed!

I've often warned you in the past to report any GI symptoms to your doctor right away, especially if you are taking a NSAID and I am telling you again! Do not take this stuff lightly! My first bout of GI bleeding occurred less than a year after I began arthritis treatment, so you don't have to be on them a long time for problems to occur. And the problems have persisted for 4 years, despite the fact I quit taking NSAIDs when I first had the bleeding. GI bleeding symptoms include, among other things: black, tarry stools, vomiting of bright red blood or something that resembles coffee grounds, nausea, abdominal pain or discomfort. Be aware of them and report them to your doctor if they occur. I'll quit preaching now if you promise to heed my warning!

I had a birthday this week and a friend informed I am now halfway to 70. Is that depressing or what? I guess I am truly "middle aged" now. Yick!!!

And?thanks so much for all the responses to my question about finding a clear plastic cane! I never knew so many places sold them!

Ron's Ramblin's
(ron@arthritisinsight.com)

Who do you believe and how do you decide. Like many of you I have a bounty of Doctors and therapists to advise me and prescribe to me through my problem times. This great except, they don't always agree. Here is an example the first rheumatologist had me on Feldene, I was referred to another rheumatologist who said I don't like feldene, change to Clinoril, and by the way I don't think it is all RA, go see an orthopaedics Doc. OK, I did that, X-rays showed RA and rotor cuff tendonitis. Well he told me that he didn't like clinoril so I should change to naproxin. Hey wait a minute I started 8 years ago with naproxin and it did no good. He also said that he didn't think that it was just RA and Rotor cuff and that I should see a neurosurgeon. I did, a person I have a lot of trust in. He had MRI's done which showed that most of the cervical discs were about shot. He didn't change the medicine but added home traction to the regimen. No problem I still have the old over the !
door water bag that you use for traction from the lumbar problems. He said that that is the one he uses. Well, he also recommended physical therapy. Well, since I was already doing therapy for another doctor, I just told the therapist what he had said. Now, she is trained in muscle and skeletal movement and manipulation and said that the home traction device that the neurosurgeon said to use was not good for me and that he had not prescribed enough weight to it and had prescribed too long a time. I am going to finish this Ramblin' with the words I started with: Who do you believe and how do you decide.

Your Weekly Giggle

A nun was going to Chicago. She went to the airport and sat down waiting for her flight. She looked over in the corner and saw one of those weight machines that tells your fortune. So, she thought to herself "I'll give it a try just to see what it tells me." She went over to the machine and put her nickel in, and out came a card that said, "You're a nun you weigh 128 lbs. and your are going to Chicago, Illinois." She sat back down and thought about it. She told herself it probably tells everyone the same thing, but decided to try it again. She went back to the machine and put her nickel in. Out came a card that read, "you're a nun, you weigh 128 lbs. , your going to Chicago, Illinois and you are going to play a fiddle." The nun said to herself, "I know that's wrong, I have never played a musical instrument a day in my life." She sat back down. From nowhere a Cowboy came over and set his fiddle case down next to her. The nun picked up the fiddle and just started playing beautif!
ul music. Startled, she looked back at the machine and said, "This is incredible. I've got to try it again." Back to the machine. She put her nickel in and another card came out. It said, "You're a nun, you weigh 128 lbs., you're going to Chicago, Illinois and you're going to break wind. Now, the nun knows the machine is wrong: "I've never broke wind in public a day in my life!" Well, she tripped, fell off the scales and broke wind. Stunned, she sat back down and looked at the machine. She said to herself, "This is truly unbelievable! I've got to try it again." She went back to the machine, put her nickel in and collected the card. It said, "You're a nun, you weigh 128 lbs., you have fiddled and farted around and missed your flight to Chicago!!!!!

Tina's Tips

Arthritis can affect your ability to do even the simplest of tasks. I've heard some people say, "Accept your limitations." I'm not sure accepting them is the way to go. I prefer to challenge those limitations, work around them, finding alternate ways of achieving the same goal. Every week I'll share some tips I've found to work around those annoying limitations and I hope all of you will send in your tips too. We may not be the next Martha Stewart, but sometimes the simplest things can help so much.

What a wonderful tip from Mary! If anyone else has info on such a center in your state, please let us know and we will compile a list.

I wanted others in the group to know about a resource that I've found invaluable, my state's assisted technology lending library. I know each state is supposed to have a center for lending but I was unable to find a link for all the states. In Pennsylvania that library is at Temple University.
The URL is http://www.temple.edu/inst_disabilities/atlend

I have borrowed everything from a suitcase full of reachers, about 15 different kinds, to a kitchen arthritis kit with all sorts of goodies, to adaptive speaker phones, and no hand mouses. They even lend ramps and wheelchairs. I've saved so much money by trying stuff out first, things I thought I would love I hated and vice versa. The borrowing time ranges from 2 weeks for low-tech items, to 2 months for expensive or high tech things.

And from Linda:

I'm now using a box cutter (tool with a razor blade) to open cardboard box tops in the kitchen. Most of the "open here" areas on a box do not work very well, so I just slice the entire top off of the box. Works great on sugar boxes, pasta boxes, etc. Just keep that other hand at a safe distance and use caution.

Expert Advice:
I have had problems with all the medications I have taken for RA. Vomiting with NSAIDs, collapsing/breathing problems with Plaquenil, and now extreme nausea with Methotrexate. My Rhumatologist is looking at Pred as my next med, but I'm not happy about this. When I have had stomach problems with my meds I have been able to stop them straight away, with Pred I understand that once you're on it, you can't get off. The thought of being on a medication, having adverse reactions (and I am pessimistic now that I have a history of these) and stuck on it doesn't appeal. I am now thinking of just taking 400mg Ibuprofen x 3 a day as I see able to take this at low dose and seeing how it goes. What do you think?

Cooking With Char!

Hello again!!! Well, Labor Day is nearly here. The unofficial end to summer. And often the last fling for picnics, barbecues, and the like. So lets see if I can come up with a menu for that last fling.

How about-
Pan Fried Chicken
Baked Beans
Fresh Vegetable Salad
and Lemonade Pie

Pan Fried Chicken
I always fry my chicken in my electric skillet on 250-300 degrees, with the lid on, turning as necessary. You should have about 1/4-1/2 inch of vegetable oil in the skillet.
To coat the chicken, I use plain flour with garlic powder and herbs mixed into the flour. And I usually skin the chicken before frying.
Sometimes, I use sage, or mixed Italian herbs, or the commercially available "chicken seasoning." It usually depends on what I put my hands on first. But use your imagination and try different things.

My baked beans are a favorite at family get togethers and pot lucks.

My Baked Beans
In a skillet-
Brown 1 LB of bacon (cut into small pieces)
1 large onion-diced
Add-
1 can pork and beans
1 can kidney or red beans
1 8 oz package frozen lima beans
1 cup brown sugar
1 tbs. Mustard
1/4 C EITHER catsup or barbecue sauce
Can be served right from the skillet after simmering a bit, or put into a casserole dish and baked in the oven for 30 minutes or so.

Fresh Vegetable Salad
Into a large bowl-
Cut into bite sized pieces
Fresh tomatoes
Carrots
cauliflower
cucumber
zucchini
any and all veggies that can be eaten fresh
Chop fresh herbs like oregano, cilantro etc.
Or dried herbs (I usually use mixed Italian herbs) Be sure to crush dried herbs to release their oils. (You can use a mortar and pestle or the back of a spoon in a cup)
Add a good olive oil (just enough to very lightly coat veggies)
Add a good pinch of salt
Toss well
Let sit in your refrigerator over night
And toss just before serving.

Lemonade Pie
I was experimenting this weekend and didn't accomplish what I set out to, but did come up with this. My husband and nephew loved it. If you try it, can you drop me a note and tell me how your family liked it?
In a mixing bowl
Whip one package of cream cheese.
To this add 1/4 to 1/3 of a small can of frozen lemonade
Whip until they are well combined
Fold in a 8 oz. bowl of nondairy whipped topping
Pour into a ready made graham cracker crust. And chill.

I am still waiting to hear from you, my readers, with recipes and decorating ideas for the holidays this year. Come on folks, I can't do this job without you!!

If you have comments or suggestions about my column, please address them to Char@arthritisinsight.com

Life and Laughter with Arthritis
(ron@arthritisinsight.co
m )

This week's story is from Diane2:
Last week our three and a half year old granddaughter stayed with us for a few days while her parents had to be out of town. One morning, when I was especially stiff and achy, Cheyenne requested French Toast for breakfast.
Not wanting to go to that much trouble I told her the eggs weren't fresh so she would have to eat cereal. Later, while cleaning up the kitchen, I found the eggs in the garbage. Cheyenne got French Toast made with "fresh" eggs the next morning.

Got an arthritis story to make us chuckle? Please share!!
