Notes From Tina
(tina@arthritisinsight.com)
Tina Underwood aka KrissyJo

What a week! And it isnt over yet. On Thursday my grandma had a minor heart attack and tests showed that 2 of her 3 bypasses (which were just done in March) had occluded. So she spent a couple of days in intensive care and had stents inserted in those vessels. Shes a very spunky little thing and is home recuperating now.

Luckily, she was at her Cardiac Rehab class hooked to a heart monitor when it happened. She had no symptoms at all and wasnt very pleased when the nurse came in and whisked her to the ER. I dont want to think of what would have happened if she werent there and on the monitor when it occurred.

On Monday, a very close friend had a biopsy of a lung tumor. Well find out this afternoon what kind of cancer it is and what the treatment will be. Id appreciate all the good thoughts and vibes you can send her way! She is quite a special lady.

And, although I expect no surprises, I find out my stomach and esophagus biopsy results this afternoon also. I always get a little nervous waiting for those.

But the good news is, I should have a new nephew by the end of the day! My sister is in labor as we speak! A month early but he should be a healthy little guy. Looks like he can be the guest of honor at his own shower this weekend!

Lets hope next week is less eventful!
Have a great week!

Hi gang, well, we are getting a bit of a rest from the really hot and muggy weather. Down into the lower 60s and even to the upper 50s. Great sleeping weather. Have had the windows open for the past couple nights. Hope it is the same for everyone.

Well, tomorrow (Wednesday) I will be spending the day with one of my favorite past times; medical testing. I dont know about the rest of you, but I have been poked and prodded about as much as I care to be. Actually, tomorrow, I get to try a couple new ones. First thing in the morning, I have 3 hours of a test that I had never heard of... Evoked Potentials, followed by a Lumbar Puncture (spinal tap). I really just cant wait to see what neat surprises they have in store for me next. Ah well, it will all be over and they will once again tell me that I have something but they have no idea what it is.

I think I am getting really tired of being a gimp... Oh well, this too will pass, just gotta keep smiling and make them wonder what you are up to...

Tina's Tips

Arthritis can affect your ability to do even the simplest of tasks. I've heard some people say, "Accept your limitations." I'm not sure accepting them is the way to go. I prefer to challenge those limitations, work around them, finding alternate ways of achieving the same goal. Every week I'll share some tips I've found to work around those annoying limitations and I hope all of you will send in your tips too. We may not be the next Martha Stewart, but sometimes the simplest things can help so much.

Anyone who sends me five new (never published on AI) tips and includes their mailing address with get an Arthritis Insight easy grip pen!

These are from Joan: My fingers are too stiff and swollen to use the regular squeeze-type staple removers. I found one made by Swingline that has a long handle with a tip that slides under the staple and allows you to lift it out. It is also magnetized so the staple doesn't go flying across the room.

If you do a lot of writing, invest in those "chubby" pens and lead pencils. My favorites are made by Pilot (Dr. Grip) and Sanford (PhD). There is also now a variety of pens that have a cushioned rubber grip, such as the Zebra Jimnie Gel Rollerball.

If you work in a busy office atmosphere, invest in a small water fountain. Mine is a simple glazed ceramic bowl, filled with smooth river rocks. The water bubbles up among the rocks to create the sound of a babbling brook. It is amazing how relaxing listening to this can be! I have found that my level of pain is often directly affected by my stress level, so every little bit helps!

Advice for Better Living
Hi my name is Michelle,
I am 33 years old and have just been diagnosed with nerve compression, spinal arthritis, and degenerative disc disease. Since I was little I have always felt some pain in my shoulders and neck. Sometimes the muscles in my neck would give out and I could'nt lift my head off my shoulder. As my life progressed so did my neck pain, my back pain, then my arms. For 3 years I have underwent an excruciating amount of pain. I have went for so long without releif that my thinking was becoming clouded. I just want an end to my pain. Or at least to be in control of it. I really don't like when my pain get's real bad my thoughts race ahead of me, will I always have this amount of pain, Will I ever be able to do simple things like vacume without hurting badly for the next week. My parents don't understand and they think I am having marital problems. I told them of the amount of pain but they don't seem to understand. Lately I have found a doctor who has helped me. I am on drug therapy and soon to start physical therapy.(Again for the 3rd time) My medications aren't working but I am afraid to ask for something different because I really don't want more pain releivers but right now I can't even take care of my family and work without something, also what if the doctors think I'm becoming addicted. What happens also if you do become addicted. I'm scared of all the different scenarios. Can someone please give me a light at the end of this tunnel.
Thank you and God Bless

Cooking with Char
Char LeFleur
Char@arthritisinsight.com

Hello everyone! It has finally cooled off in Iowa, and I am loving it! Have the windows open and the AC turned off. Now if we could just get a little rain, it would help. Crops are awfully dry. And as a result your corn flakes and pork chops are probably going to be a little higher.

But this column is supposed to be about cooking, so let's get started!

When I marinate meat, it is often in bottled Italian salad dressing. But I had some meat I wanted to marinate, over the weekend, and no Italian dressing. I had an idea! I had been making sweet pickle relish last week and had some of the pickle brine left over so marinated pork roast in that. Then we cooked it on the grill. And it was great!

The moral of the story is----Experiment in the kitchen! You never know, what wonderful things you might come up with.

And speaking of pork-----if you have never cooked a pork loin on the grill, you must try it.

Grilled Pork Loin

Marinate overnight in bottled Italian salad dressing.
Grill until just pink on the inside
Let sit for about 10 minutes, covered
Slice and serve

Good enough to be served in the finest gourmet restaurants. You will love it.

Marinating overnight can tenderize and add flavor to the less expensive cuts of meat too. Give it a try!

Another grilling idea I came up with this year--------

Grilled Herbed Potatoes

I took a disposable aluminum pan and punched holes in the bottom with a knife.
Wash potatoes and cube (about 3/4 inch square)
Place in aluminum pan
Spray with butter flavored or olive oil cooking spray, thoroughly coating potato cubes
Sprinkle with desired herbs--I reccomend garlic, Italian herbs, basil, and/or parsley.
Cook on the grill, stirring as needed (Cooking over charcoal, gives the potatoes a wonderful smokey flavor.)

Grilling is one of my favorite ways to cook. I would love recipes and suggestions from YOU about things you like to grill.

If you have comments or suggestions or have recipes you would like to share, send them to Char@arthritisinsight.com

Quack Quack - "Cures" for Arthritis
By Jan Cantle aka GrannyJan

Have you noticed, you only have to mention the word arthritis and the world and his mother says, "you ought to try..."

None of these people seem to realize that with 200 types of arthritis you probably dont have the same type as Great Aunt Maud. Well, I started taking notes, and for what its worth here are a few of my favourite "treatments".

WHATEVER YOU DO DONT TRY THESE AT HOME!

There is no scientific or medical proof behind any of these, and some could be downright dangerous.

First the easy ones, ripe black cherries- up to 15 three times a day. Take a packet of golden raisins, soak in a quart of gin, and take 5 raisins 3 times a day. Following on the alcoholic theme, take 4 raw finely sliced beetroot and soak them in a quart of berry wine for one day. Drink one small glass before meals three times a day. Take one pint of fruit wine and add a heaping dessert spoon of each of the following: paprika, ground ginger, cayenne pepper, and nutmeg. Sip a teaspoon full gently before meals- it may be advisable to have a gallon of iced water handy.

Fruit occurs in a fair few mixtures. Pineapple, which contains an ingredient called bromelain, is showing some promise in clinical trials. Cranberry juice has been suggested on more than one occasion. One way is to add a tablespoon of fruit pectin to a small glass of juice and drink it each morning. Alternatively dissolve 4 teaspoons of blackstrap molasses in a quart of cranberry juice and drink a glass a day. Neat lime juice had been recommended or a mix of equal parts of lemon and fresh carrot juice, one large spoonful daily.

Various herbal mixtures have been suggested. Take six ounces of sassafras root and steep in a fifth of whiskey for twenty four hours and take one tablespoon three times a day before meals. Sassafras is in fact used in Spain as a treatment for rheumatic pain. Alfalfa, made into a tea by steeping one cup of seed in half a gallon of water, for twenty minutes. Take a small glassful three times a day. Do not use if you have lupus (SLE). The following recipe will either knock you out or have you on the toilet for the rest of the day. Take equal parts of black cohosh, gentian root, angelica, columbo, skullcap, valerian, rue (poisonous) and buckthorn bark and take one heaping teaspoon in a cup of boiling water, drink three half cups a day.

Almost anyone with arthritis will have rubbed a sore joint to try and make it better. The variety of things you can rub in, or put on them, is amazing.

Dissolve one hundred aspirin tablets in a pint of alcohol - are all arthritic people alcohol fiends - and rub into the sore joints three times a day. Mix two parts of pure olive oil and one part kerosene as a liniment, and bathe the affected joints in it. Mix camphor, methyl salicylate, eucalyptus and menthol to make a rubbing mixture for aches and pains. This one seems to have some ingredients found in over the counter rubs.

Everyone knows that applying heat or cold (in the form of a packet of frozen peas usually!) can help, rubbing the sore areas over with hot vinegar before bed would probably leave you smelling like a fish and chip shop. Suggestions I have also seen are to wrap the affected joint in cold cabbage leaves, or to rub it with nettles. However, I dont think I will go and roll in the nettle patch to take the pain away. There is some research going on into the nettle stings, and it seems that, like cream containing chilli extract, there is a benefit even if it is by distracting you from the original discomfort.

Sex has been found in many places in my hunt for a cure. Unfortunately, it is not clear whether you should abstain, or indulge far more often. At least, in the more often camp there are serious benefits. People with arthritis need to keep warm, to do stretching and relaxing exercise and to increase the level of endorphins (natures own painkiller). Sexual activity brings up the body temperature, provides gentle exercise, and leads to deep relaxation and releases endorphins!

Of all the suggestions I found whilst looking into this my favourite is the following: - Sunshine, sunbaths and deep breathing of fresh air are very important.

With that in mind, Im off to book a holiday. And I wont tell anybody Ive got arthritis.

We're finally getting some reasonable temps in central PA and I hope everyone out there who has been enduring an unusually hot spell is also enjoying some relief. Only a few weeks until the pools close and school starts - time marches on. I'm more than a little anxious this year for the crisp days of fall, warm pumpkin pie and taking the new member of our family, Lacy, for walks in the leaves. And I'm also anxious to turn off these air conditioners! A great week to everyone and please don't miss my personal message in the Links section.

=== Computers 101 ===

Q: I copied some files to a CD-R and then needed to re-copy them back to the hard drive. After I did so, I wasn't able to modify them. What's going on?

A: When you copy files from a CD to your computer, the files copy as "Read Only". As far as I know there is no way around this, presumably since most CD ROM drives only read info, not write it. What's the fix? Once the files are copied to your hard drive, change their attributes so they aren't "Read Only" anymore. To do this, right-click the file and select Properties from the resulting menu. Next, uncheck the "Read Only" checkbox on the lower part of the Properties screen. Hit OK and your all set.

Q: What does it mean when software is a "beta" version?

A: A beta version is basically a test version of a software program. The program has been written, and the author(s) think that it is probably bug free, but they aren't 100% sure. So they release a test version. Sometimes the test version is open to the public, sometimes just to a select group. In any event, if you download a pre-release or beta version of a program, keep in mind that, since it is a test version, you may encounter problems. These problems are generally isolated to the program, but it may accidentally cause damage to other software on your machine (especially shared files). So, beta test at your own risk!

=== Tip of the Week ===

Deleting Auto-Completes

By default, newer versions of Internet Explorer (v5.0+) can automatically "remember" stuff you've filled in on web forms (including passwords). Well, if you've ever entered the wrong item, you know what a pain it can be. Every time you fill in a form, you get multiple choices from the little auto-complete drop box, but only one (usually the one at the bottom of the list) is the correct one.

How do you shed the excess? Depends on how far you want to go with it. If you just want a word or two gone, next time you see one in the auto-complete drop box, arrow down to it and press your Delete key. Poof! David Copperfield ain't got nothin' on you! If you want to clear the whole thing out, you can do that too. Open Internet Explorer, hit the Tools menu, Internet Options. Next, click the Content Tab, then the AutoComplete button. On the resulting screen, click the "Clear Forms" button to clear out web form info and the "Clear Passwords" button to get rid of any password info you have stored.

Note that this does not get rid of the web addresses in your address bar. Go to the General tab of the Internet Options screen and hit Clear History to do that.

Finally, if you want to shut this feature off (or turn it on) you can do so from the AutoComplete screen. Just check or un-check the appropriate boxes.

=== P.C. Smiles ===

There was a doctor, a civil engineer, and a computer scientist sitting around late one evening, and they got to discussing which was the oldest profession. The doctor pointed out that according to Biblical tradition, God created Eve from Adam's rib. This obviously required surgery, so therefore that was the oldest profession in the world. The engineer countered with an earlier passage in the Bible that stated that God created order from the chaos, and that was most certainly the biggest and best civil engineering example ever, and also proved that his profession was the oldest profession. The computer scientist leaned back in her chair, and with a sly smile responded, "Yes, but who do you think created the chaos?"

MECHANICAL STIMULATION INCREASES BONE DENSITY
Mechanical stimulation with very-low-magnitude, high frequency vibration of the proximal femurs of sheep appears to significantly increase the density of spongy bone, according to a report in the August 9th issue of Nature. A Closing Thought

The power of choice is real.
We can . . .
Choose to love--rather than hate.
Choose to smile--rather than frown.
Choose to build--rather than destroy.
Choose to persevere--rather than quit.
Choose to praise--rather than gossip.
Choose to heal--rather than wound.
Choose to give--rather than grasp.
Choose to act--rather than delay.
Choose to pray--rather than despair.
Choose to forgive--rather than curse.
Each day brings a new opportunity to choose. What kind of choices will you make today?
