Orthopedic Surgery
It came as no surprise to
find that many of us have had some sort of orthopedic surgery and many
of us are planning at least one in the near future. This week will learn
more about the different types of surgery that we may have had or may be
in our future. Let's start the week by finding out what surgeries our
community members have had: 'Yes,
index finger to thumb tendon transfer ( for a ruptured tendon). Surgery
was 2 weeks ago and I am still in a cast. The surgeon feels the surgery
was successful but I suppose time will tell.' -Chester 'I
have had 14 orthopedic surgerys, the major one's have been right hip
replacement at 13, replacements of both knee's when i was 16 and
replacement of my left elbow at 26. They were all successful.' -Aaron 'both
total elbow replacements, foot surgery' -Blondie 'I've
had bilateral carpal tunnel surgeries, bilateral rotator cuff repairs
(chronic tears secondary to spurs) and arthroscopic surgery of my right
knee. I have had recurrent problems with both shoulders and my knee. I
need a re-do surgery on the right knee and a first time on the left. So
many surgeries... so little time...' -Sharon 'I
have had 2 unicompartmental knee replacements, then 5 yrs. later, I had
2 TKRs.' -Char 'Yes,3
times.
First was Jan. 80 to remove torn cartilage from the inner part of my
knee. I was relatively pain free for almost 20 years.
Second was in June of 2000. I had an arthroscopy. The rest of the
cartilage was removed, and the joint was cleaned up. Slight bone on bone
was found at this time. I could now bend my knee, but the pain was
increasing.
Third was Jan 29,2001. I had a unicompartment knee replacement. I was
hospitalized for 23 hours, in therapy 3 days later. It is now 2 weeks
and 2 days after surgery. Recovery is going very well.' -Deb '70's:
Ball joints removed from both feet. I would not have that procedure done
again. Unsuccesful
Procedure to clean out joints on both hands (where fingers join hand).
Very unsuccessful.
Surgery to correct this procedure followed. Partially successful.
Hip replacement in 1978. Very successful. Still doing well after 22 yrs.
80's: Joint replacement both hands. Partially successful.
Hip replacement in 1985. Very successful.
90's: 2 fingers & thumb fused on left hand. Partially successful.
Knee replacement in 1996. Successful.' -JBug 'I
have had 3 surgeries done on my lower spine,L4-S1. The last surgery
helped the most. They removed the S1 disc and replaced it with a fusion
cage made out of titanium.Inside the cage, they placed bone
scrapings, which then grow and fuse my spine together.I am limited on my
range of motion in walking, but the severe pain is gone.this was done 3
years ago.' -Carole 'I
had an arthoscopy on my left knee.
It was successful in that I have less grinding on my knee, but it was
discovered that I have no cartlidge left under my knee cap. I have more
daily pain now than I did before my surgery.' -Geri 'Yes,
I had the joint of my right great toe replaced. Sucess is that it no
longer hurts. However the surgery left it raised up in the air and that
makes me hit harder on the next toe. So that is in excruciating pain.
Next month I meet with a foot doctor to see what we can do about that
one. Not really much of an orthopedic experience compared to what some
people go through.' -Toni 'TKR,
very successful
wrist fusion, also very successful
THR, and also very successful' -Pic 'Arthroscopy
on both knees. I had torn menisci, shredded cartilege on sides of knees
and in back of knee caps. The surgery helped a lot regarding pain in the
area.' -Judy 'I have
had three arthroscopics done on my right knee. They have all been
successful at fixing what was wrong up to the last one done last March
everything was going good and bam swelling started agian and would also
give out.Doc was going to go back in but when I found out that it could
be RA he decided not to. So its RA and I suffer.' -Rene 'TKR
(left) in Nov. 1999 Successful
THR (left) in Aug. 2000 Successful' -Mary 'Synovectomy
8 joints on right hand and synovectomy L subtalor joint (ankle). The
hand surgery was very successful, but less than one year after the ankle
surgery it is no better, if not worse than it was before surgery.' -KJ Check
back often, we'll have something new everyday. And don't forget to join
us in the chatroom at 9:30 pm tonight (Monday), Dr Merriman will join us
to answer our questions about joint surgery.
