Topic: Going for Surgery in June Posted: 04 April 2008 at 3:00am |

Hi Everyone, I am supposed to have arthroscopic surgery on my left knee in June. There is a possibility that I won't require the surgery if my body takes care of the damaged cartilage on its own. Just wanted to know what I should expect after the surgery. Did you notice vast imporvements? Were you unable to walk for weeks afterwards? Were you in lots of pain? Has it hindered more than help your knees? Any information on this procedure would be so helpful. Thanks!

Hello! I had arthroscopic surgery on my right knee almost 7 years ago, but I can't even begin to tell you how much it has helped me. I used to have such severe pain in my knee that walking was almost impossible. My recovery from the surgery was long (about 3 months) but after 3 weeks, I was able to drive myself to the physical therapist and go back to work on a limited basis. The first couple of days after the surgery, I was on major pain medication but I still had a significant amount of pain, I mostly slept for the entire day. I have to warn you that the surgery is not a cure-all. I still have some pain, but it is nothing compared to what it was before the surgery.

I've finally learned I have to take it one day at a time.

My problem is that I do have pain, not always, but my knee is constantly swollen and my range of motion is continuously limited by this. Was your surgery does as an outpatient procedure? Did you have anything done besides shaving down the damaged cartilage? How long were you on crutches for? And what was your physical therapy like? I hate to ask so many questions, but I feel so lost in this. My surgeon has talked about cutting my synovial lining to remove the arthritis...have you heard that doing this takes the arthritis away??? I am a bit scared of what is in store for me because I just don't know how I will be.
