Interesting.  Normally someone has to get a warrant to get such information from another person's ISP.

Would anyone like to see Prickcushion's, Joonie's, Lorster's & Lyndee's personal information posted here?  I've got IP addresses, home addresses, email addresses, screenshots of their house from Google earth and tomorrow the newest report will be emailed to me with phone numbers as well.

So, you better leave me alone, keep my name off of this stupid board and stop stalking me on the internet.  If you continue with this charade I sware I will take this as far as possible, legally and personally.  I have nothing to lose but a couple thousand dollars and that is trump change considering it will finally put an end to your crap on this forum.

How the hell did I get brought into this conversation?

I have not been to your so called forum. I do not even know what it is called or even the other forum you are a member of. I was done with you a long time ago. So, why would I bother with you now?

Post what you claim to have on me. It is not mine. And when you post it, Babs10 can varify if it is my information or not. As she has my name and mailing address. No need in me saying if it is mine or not and you claim I am lying. I am not a liar and never have been.

So, post what you claim you have on me. As I know I have not went to your creepy dolly forum. So, I know what you say you have on me is not mine.

As I've discussed in previous articles, there are common services on the internet that will return information about an IP address. Services like ARIN, PlotIP and others will return information about the ISP or hosting company that owns the block that the IP is a part of. Typically that will include the name, address, phone number of the ISP.

"... if you're a regular person just trying to track something down on your own, you simply cannot get the information."

At that point your only option is to contact the ISP and ask them. They do know which of their customers the IP is assigned to. The problem is that ISPs will not give this information out to just anyone. Typically it will require legal actions, as part of some kind of police or court proceeding, to get the ISP to release the information.

So can you get a name an address from an IP? Yes ... if you have the legal backing to go get it. Otherwise, if you're a regular person just trying to track something down on your own, you simply cannot get the information.

Jasmine/Joonie,

Believe what you like but there are many, many sites that offer IP Tracking.  When you run a forum, you have total access to all the IP's, guests or members.  Then all you have to do is pay a monthly fee to one of those IP Tracking sites to access the personal info.  I did it, simple as pie.  Don't say you can't do it until you've tired it. Wink

And Joonie, you and lyndee where the ones stalking me on the internet, posting my personal information on this forum as well as threatening to post my daughter's info.  Your words tell on you, the particular way you write, even the little digs-same ones you said before, I know it's you without a doubt.  I know where you live in Alabama.  I saw pictures you posted of your house on this forum (via your public photobucket account) and guess what?  It was the very house I saw on Google earth as I was tracking your IP address.

Now I'm done discussing this with you evil people, say what you like, I spoke with my attorney this morning who is referring me to an attorney that specializes in this kind of thing.  I've had it with all of you.  It's time someone puts a halt to this crap.  And don't worry about deleting your old posts that contain the inflammatory remarks, I have the screenshots.

You really should read up on the law as it pertains to the internet.  You would certainly change your ways, then again maybe you wouldn't, either way, I've "gotcha".

ONLINE TRACKING: How ANONYMOUS is the INTERNET?

Part 2: IP Address Analysis

What is an IP address?

One common misconception held by many web surfers is that their location on the internet is hidden -- in other words, that when they click on a link or type a URL into the address bar on their browser, the web server sending them the file does not know where they are on the internet.  Of course this is impossible.  The web server must know your 'address' in order to sent you a file, and this takes the form of an IP (Internet Protocol) address.  An IP address is a string of numbers, as unique as a telephone number, which makes it possible for a file to be sent across the country or around the world and arrive at its intended destination. [2]  Every computer connected to the internet has an IP address; for example, the computer I am working at right now has the address 207.23.94.44

So when you request a file from a web server, your browser sends it your IP address.  But that is not the only information it sends.  Privacy.net, a internet privacy advocacy site, has set up an analysis page which makes it possible to view exactly what information a web server receives about you when you request a file.  By clicking on the link at the end of this paragraph and waiting a few seconds, you will be able to see a complete analysis of your connection including:

  • your IP address
  • whether the server was successful in placing a cookie on your computer (cookies are discussed in detail starting in Part 3 below)
  • the Referer  (The Referer is the website you linked from, in other words the page you were at before jumping to the analysis page.)
  • detailed information about your computer hardware and software including browser type, screen resolution, etc.
  • the route the file took between the Privacy.net server near Washington D.C. and your computer
  • whether your browser reveals your email address  (Older versions of browsers sometimes automatically reveal email addresses.)
  • the name and address of the owner of your domain and network  (This information can be looked up in a publicly available domain registration database.) [3]
Click on the link below to try the analysis.  Then hit the back arrow on your browser menu bar to return to this site.

Thus the website operator is able to transmit a cookie to a user's computer already knowing the email address of the user -- and from the email address the individual's name can be looked up in one of the many email address directories.  To learn more about this technique see Smith's description of it at his website.  USA Today reports that Junkbusters, The Electronic Privacy Information Center, the Center for Media Education, Privacy International, Ralph Nader’s Consumer Project on Technology, The Consumer Federation of America and the Electronic Frontier Foundation are petitioning the FTC today (3 December 1999) to order browser manufacturers to fix the flaw which allows email programs to accept cookies
