Schirmer's Test

What is it?

It is a measurement of the amount of tears produced

What is the purpose?

Sjogren's Syndrome is characterized by dry mouth and eyes. This will be useful is diagnosing Sjogren's Syndrome.

Is there any special preparation?

There is no special prep. Do not use eye drops or wear contacts the day of the procedure.

How is it done?

A strip of filter paper is folded and placed in the lower eyelid and left for five minutes. The paper is removed and the amount of absorbed fluid is measured. It may be repeated and eyedrops instilled.

What happens afterwards?

There should be no special instructions.

What are the risks of this procedure?

There are no known risks besides eye irritation that should quickly resolve itself.

Does it hurt?

Not really, although it may be uncomfortable.
