Abbreviations

Medical lingo is full of abbreviations and shorthand. Reading a prescription is like reading a foreign language. Hopefully these translations will help.

AS----Ankylosing Spondylitis

ASA----Acetylsalicylic Acid (aspirin)

DMARD----Disease Modifying Anti Rheumatic Drug

FMS----Fibromyalgia Syndrome

HS---At Bedtime

IM---Intramuscular (injection into the muscle)

JA----Juvenile Arthritis

JRA----Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis

MTX----Methotrexate

NSAID----Non Steroidal Anti Inflamatory Drug

OA----Osteoarthritis

OT----Occupational Therapy

OTC----Over the Counter

PA----Psoriatic Arthritis or Physician's Assistant

PO----By mouth

PT----Physical Therapy

QD----Once daily

QOD---Every other day

QID----4 times a day

RA----Rheumatoid Arthritis

RD----Rheumatologist Doctor

SAARD----Slow Acting Anti Rheumatic Drug

SubQ---Subcutaneous (injection just under the skin)

SLE----Systemic Lupus Erythematosus(Lupus)

TID----3 times a day
