Nuclear Medicine Bone Scans | Arthritis Information

Hi guys, just wondered has anyone ever experienced an increase in pain after the tracer injection used for these tests.  I know they only use a small amount of radioactive material but I had a very strange mini-flare yesterday after the injection.  Thanks for any input, Janie.

I had one about a month ago and had no problem after the injection.  Now, laying on the table and being still for the period of the test did cause discomfort.  That camera, or whatever it's called, gets so close!

Hi Janie,

What is a nuclear medicine bone scan?  I've never had anything but plain old x-rays and have no idea on this.  I'm curious because hopefully I'll be able to get an appointment with a new RA next month.  I know that if he mentioned this to me I would start panicking.  Nuclear what? No way!  They shoot you up with a radioactive substance and a couple of hours later take the scan, after the bones have had a chance to absorb the tracer.  Areas of bone with higher metabolism (fractures, cancer, arthritis) will take up more of the substance and will light up on the scan. Thanks Jazz.  Now I get it.
