I have been posting all day. I am 36, male, and have fairly severe RA. I have been trying to fit in here but I am getting very few, if any responses. My RA is not painful today, but in general I have no one to talk to about my disease that understands. If the ladies here will give me a chance and help me undestand what works for them, what I should be stressing to my PCP and my shrink and my RA specialist, I would greatly appreciate it. The chat I just read about everyone going shopping together and making each other pretty was understandable but left me feeling , well, left out.

Thanks!

Chris

I'm sorry, Chris! That was the first chat I remember us having, believe it or not.

But I can understand you feeling left out. Sorry, but I'm another woman

I have to stop for the night real soon, but I'll be back tomorrow morning, so why don't you write down some of your questions, and I'll see if I can help. I'm sure some of the others will be along soon.

Again, I'm sorry you are feeling left out tonite. I think the chat is such a novelty for us that everyone is kinda hanging out there for a while.

Sleep well!

Nini

Hi Chris:

I'm sure sorry you're feeling left out.  I know we all certainly share the pain of RA and its effects on our lives.  I don't do much shopping myself.  :)  What I find very useful is to sort of keep a journal of my symtpoms.  Each day I make notes of what I am feeling, how I am feeling - because otherwise I totally forget.

I take an overview with me to each appt - even the Rheumy and PCP.  That way everyone is on the same page.  I have always stressed to both care providers that communication between the two of them is very important to me.  It doesn't do much good for one to be treating you one way, another to be treating you another way.  That does tend to happen I've noticed with the specialists.  You go in with a problem and they say, "That's not related to RA.  You need to speak to your PCP."

It's almost important to talk about it.  I'm relatively new to this and I've found it very helpful reading through the posts, even when I don't respond.  I know that folks are not avoiding posting to you on purpose.  How we all varies to greatly - I think some days are just slow and folks aren't feeling good, are busy or just aren't sure what to say.  Don't give up - we are all here for you.

Other than that - I don't have a lot of great advice.  Rest when you can.  Write here any time and write me any time if you want to talk.  I have a strong shoulder and sure understand what you're experiencing - aside from the being a male part.  ;)

I hope you have a good night.  Take care and hope to see you around here.

Jen

Sorry Chris, that is not what was meant by it. For what it is worth here is what works for me.  I have had RA for about a year.

Just kiddin Chris we'll all be here for ya, really, I'm just an old foogy and slow
Jen and Nini- I appreciate your responses. Jen, I get a lot of what you said at the doctors office-"thats not RA related so talk to X person at x department". I hate that. My main problem is I can't sleep due to pain a lot of times, and my PCP says that 1 ambien is the maximum dose. Well, it takes my 2 to stay asleep. He put me on trazedone instead, but it makes me so drowsy the next day I can't get anything done. So, I talked to him about this and he said he is out of options. Out of options? All I need is permission to take two ambien instead of one, but he dissmissed that. So, I am saving up one pill and sleeping every-other night. Tonight is one of those off nights where I will not sleep for more than 2 hours. I refuse to take more medicine than my doctor reccommends, but wonder if anyone else has similar problems. thanks

Hi Chris - 34 year old male here.

If you ever want to chat, feel free to PM me.

Look, I love my women too! I have 3 daughters so I understand completely. I just feel like I have a womens disease in a womens world. God, even my dog is a girl. AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHHH

Well hummm, I don't sleep walk but I only take ambien a couple nights a week. My dr will give me anything. I control everything really well. I have demerol for severe pain, and vicodin for moderate, and flexeril and celebrex. the 12.5 is more expensive so I try not to take it often. Do you have a wife? Tie your leg to hers and you cant sleep walk

I asked on another topic, but what kind of pain patch do you use? Is it demerol on a patch? How long does it work? I currently take methadone 80mg. I take 40mg in the morning and 40 at night, but I am very interested in a pain patch that will last several days...It would save me from having to take the 8 methadone pills a day.

Hi Chris:

I have similar sleeping problems.  I've tried everything from Ambien, Ambien CR to Lunesta and others.  I found Lunesta helped a bit - but none of them really did the trick when I was in a flare or hurting particularly much.  I've not heard of any troubles with Ambien CR.  I think a few patients from a doc's perspective doesn't necessary warrant him ruling it out for you.

I just got the "we're out of options" from my Rheumy.  Lovely!  It's time to find a new doctor for me.  Thankfully we are moving out of town, unfortunately our insurance will not cover out of town docs since my hubby will have to keep his job until he finds a new one in Utah.  We will have to fly in for our doc appts!  My little girl has Epilepsy - so we are very familiar with doctors.  Ugh.

Anyway - regarding the sleep - this might sound funny, but some nights when I'm having pain a simple does of 2 Pamprin help me sleep.  Sometimes I'm a bit groggy in the morning - but if I take it early enough in the evening it seems to help.  I know it says for women's menstrual pain - but it's acetominephen based and it really does help me at times.

My doc has also given me Klonopin and that helps sometimes.  My PCP gave it to me because I have the shakes and it helps me to relax and not shake so much.  Also - I tend to hold my muscles tight due to Fibro and RA - so it helps reduce the pain from clenching.

There are many other options out there.  I would recommend, if you are able, to perhaps consider a new doc.  I know it's a huge pain but when you get the "no more options" from one - it's time to move on if you are able.  I always believe there are options.  Some kids with Epilepsy (adults also) that have sleeping problems take Melatonin at night.  With a doc's supervision, they can determine the right dose and it can help with sleep.  I know MANY folks who have found it useful - particularly folks that are taking many meds already.

Anyway - good luck and I hope you can get some rest.  I read a LOT so I think of night time as either internet jumping or reading and alone time.  ;)

Take care.

Jen

Hey Chris, Leroy here, one of the Guys! pain sucks in any way shape or form. wouldn't it be cool if you could just share that pain w/ DR.DONTGIVEAHOOT! I'll bet he could come up with something real quick if you did!! Hang in there Brother.

Leroy

My pain patch is called Duragesic and is quite powerful. It last three days. Uhh its got another name..Uhh shoot...I cant think of it...Fentynal(sp) thats it! I have only used it for extreme gout. They only give me 5 at a time

I am disappointed! I thought the reason MoNana and Jen was visiting this thread was because there was a peep show going on of all the men on the board! I figured their replies where like coins, to get an extra 5 mins of a "show". Boy am I ever disappointed!

SSHHH We dont say the word sex out loud in front of Joonie, Chris. You have to whisper because Karen said Joonie was a preevert

Joonie? Are you a pervert? If so I am outraged! Why I never heard of such a..........ok just kidding if ur a pervert just PM me , send me a nickel, and I will arrange that peep show for you!

I've been taking Restoril for sleep for about 4 years. I'd tried many others like Ambien, Lunesta, Sonata, none of them helped. Then I tried Restoril and slept for the first time in months. It was a life saver. My Dr. told me to only take it twice a week because he didnt' want me to get addicted and I tried, I really did. But sleep is just so wonderful that I caved and started taking one every night. Unfortunately, they lose their effectiveness with time and so now I take one 30mg. with one or two over the counter sleeping pills like tylenol pm, without the tylenol. I sleep pretty well still. It's very hot here in Florida and my husband doesn't want the air conditioning to be under 77 degrees, and I get too hot and that's what keeps me up. When I was in Oregon for a few weeks I had the windows open all night and the air was cool and I slept like a baby. Anyway, change Dr.s if you can. Mine was willing to help any way he could.

I hope for the best for you regarding your family. I really feel for you. This isn't the time for you to be alone. Please don't give up on us. I'm sending cyber hugs your way.

I ain't no pervert! Well not by my daughter's definition of what a prevert is

Flash Back to a couple of weeks ago....

Daughter & I were sitting on the bench in wal-mart waiting on hubby to finish checking out. And then people walk by and my daughter says "PREVERTS!" I looked at her with a shocked look and asked her what she thought prevert meant. She replied with "Someone who is nosey." I then started to laugh and said "Ummmm... No.... I think I will let your daddy handle telling you the definition of a prevert."

This reply is for moana too.

Yeah, me and Dr. Nogivahoot have met. He met Mr. yourgonnatakecareofmeorelse. I hate having to beg to sleep and have my pain controlled. I would much rather be on the pain patch Moana has, but my doctor looked at me like I was crazy. He said that was for untreatable cancer patients only. I hate it when he lies! He also said I was on the maximum dose of Methadone, but I am happy to get what relief I can in thisa world where drug addicts have ruined it for those of us with legitimate, severe pain.

Glad to meet everyone!

Miles my sister was on Restoril too and the dr said the same thing and switched her to amytriptilyn(sp) Joonies med. It works well for her too but leaves a bit of a hangover. The medicine in tylenol is Benedryl. Make sure it will interact well with your other meds.

I believe I would die if someone turned my air to 77. Jeez! I turn mine to 68-70. Sneak in there and turn it down a bit hee hee

Chris, another thing that I have heard from folks here that helps them a lot is muscle relaxers.  Have you ever tried that to help you relax and sleep?  Pain in the joints can cause you to tighten up everywhere, which in turn causes more pain.

By the way, I am so glad you posted this.  I hope some of the other guys join in when they visit next time and maybe you can get them talking more!  Then you won't have to suffer from estrogen overload!

Chris your Dr is a dang liar. My sister has osteo and gout and fibro just like me only worse, and has been on the same patch along with pred, vicodin, and sometimes ultram. It is used for cancer patients at a much higher dose too.It goes from 25mg to 100mmg I know, maybe more. She doesn't have cancer, never has.

Moana...oh I know he is a liar. I would rather him tell me it's too addictive, or just that "i don't feel comfortable prescribing that".

He needs to just know that all I really want is 20mg of ambien a night so I can sleep. I can handle some pain, and the 8 pills is not t6hat big of a deal, but lack of sleep makes me nuts!!! About 3am I am just ready to scream. Anyway, I am going to try to get some sleep now. We will see if I actually get any sleep. If I don't, it's a comfort to know that the board is here!

I wish!

Welcome - sorry if you were ignored.  Have you looked into natural sleep aids?  They might help make the regular meds work.

Steph???  Somebody??? said they were taking extra Tylenol.  Please be very, very careful with it and make sure it's not in your other meds.  I know somebody on a transplant list - lost both kidneys.  You're not supposed to go over a certain dose a day - usually the problem happens when you add in another med like a cold medicine.  All I'm suggesting is be safe.

Pip

Yeah try benedryl, in place of tylenol

Miles thats terrible you have to suffer through hot flashes too and hubby is being inconsiderate. My hubby gets so cold he turns his side of the electric blanket on til he gets warm.

Quick we need some testosterone here - STAT!

Moana, believe it or not, I have an over-head fan, and one fan on each side of my bed both blowing right in my face and I STILL have trouble. My husband and I don't usually sleep in the same room because I toss and turn too much. It makes me sad that he won't give in to this. He has absolutely no idea how it feels to be a furnace.I did no such thing! I thought the guys were performing a peep show on this thread. That is why I kept visiting it. But every time I arrived to the thread the peep show was over with and I was all outta nickles. Hey! I wonder if Nickle Back will get me a FREE peep show

 Karen is the thread police

Joonie and Karen are mad because they keep missing the man peep show

WELL DUH Joonie it cost a quarter! Inflation girl!

UGH! I guess the penny show was soo last year

kudos to all.... and Joonie, I am either jealous of, or feel bad for, your husband!!! I havent decided yet!!!

At least now I feel better about switching the thread to star trek with katie!

Hi Chris - hope you're asleep!!!

Hi Chris,

Sorry I didn't answer your question about VA on the other thread.  I fell asleep early.  I had hardly any sleep for two nights so, I got lucky and slept for 10 hrs last night..........YAY.

Anyway, I live in Old Town Alexandria.  I have never run into anyone else from the DC metro area on the boards so, great to meet ya.

I'm a female as well.  Glad to see you got some replies last night and hope to see more of you around here.

crispy39313.4239467593

Crispy...what do you take for pain and sleep. I ran a poll the other day and was just compiling a list so I can ask my rheumy intelligent questions about meds she may not remember to offer. I have tried in the past for a pain patch but my DR says that is only for cancer patients. (he is a big fat liar)

I currently take pred 10mg, enbrel injection once weekly, cymbalta, methadone 80 mg, ambien 10 mg, and trazedone when I run out of Ambien

Hey Chris, I use melatonin for sleep. Actually, Justin and I both do. It's a natural sleep aid that another one of the girls on here told me about (she's not around much cause she's got two kids and shes a nurse) I LOVE it cause I don't wake up with a sleeping pill hangover. Wal-Mart carries it too.
I do have a wife but we are temporarily seperated. I also have 3 daughters aged 6, 5, and 2. My wife went home to her mothers since I was unable to help with the kids for over a year, and she needed help.
Chris, I'm so sorry to hear this, and I truly hope that things can work out in the future. Best of luck in your treatment!

Christina

Thanks Katie!

Cool Christina. I love the Annapolis area and the waterfront there is awesome. I have eaten at the upstairs crabhouse there often, at least it was a crabhouse a few years ago. I love MD blue crabs.

Do you have an HMO like Kaiser Permanente Christina? What meds do you take?

cskalski39313.5599305556

For pain I take Oxycodone 15 mgs every 4 hrs.  Can take two if needed.  Oxycodone is like percocet w/o the tylenol.  For sleep I have Ambien CR 12.5mgs, but I don't think it works that great.  I sometimes take Soma (muscle relaxer) or Ativan (I have those for spasmodic dysphonia).  Either of those seem to work better for me than AmbienCR.  I switched to the CR when I was not staying asleep w/the reg, but I don't like it.

Sorry I keep having to edit, I have a new computer and it won't let me turn off the touchpad and everything is getting screwed up all the time, so

Oh, BTW, My RD is also certified in pain management and does not believe we should have to suffer, so I am very fortunate.

crispy39313.5819444444

Oh, nice to meet ya drmalcom.  Love Annapolis.  Have a sailboat berthed on the West River so I have been there many times.  But I must say I would rather drive to Annapolis than go by boat, toooo crowded there in the Harbour.

Nice to see there are a few more "Mid-Atlantic Coast" folks than I thought, although sorry to meet this way.

Wow. 30 mg of oxycodone is = to 6 percocets. I think 6 percocets every 4 hours would send me off to lala land! I am kind of jealous, except my kids need me to be able to drive and my methadone doesn't make me very drowsy.

I do not have any problem with soma, it just didn't put me to sleep in regular doses. Thats my problem. No medicine works in me unless I take double the reccommended dose. 2 ambiens work just fine, but my dr is a nazi and said no way. I guess I am lucky to get ambien at all.

crispy...I meant no offense whatsoever. I am very sorry if I upset you in anyway. I know it just allows us to funtion, and I should have kept my comments to that effect. Sorry.
Do you have an HMO like Kaiser Permanente Christina? What meds do you take?
Chris, I'm still in the dx phase--first appointment on September 5th--so no meds yet. We have MD IPA (my husband is with the government), with which I could never complain, but I just discovered today that they only pay 20% (with a max of ) for injectables. I was kind of hoping to bypass MTX and just do Enbrel, but we'll have to see about that now with some folks saying they pay 0 a month on Enbrel!

Crispy, we're looking to get into a marina on the Severn River. It's not so crowded and crazy, but the mouth opens to Annapolis for when we want fireworks and Blue Angels viewing and such!

Great to meet some other mid-Atlantic folks!

Christina

Christina, you have to change saying that your going in on Sept 5 to I'm going in on Linda's birthday.  That'll make me really happy because,as you might have guessed, it is my birthday

No offense taken.  I just don't like to joke around about my pain meds.  I would not liIke to give the impression that I take them for fun.  I am already on part-time permanent disability (thank God I had a personal long-term disability plan) and the meds enable me to continue working 2 1/2 days per week.  Without my pain meds I don't have much of a life.

With all the publicity about drug seeking and even the article posted on here today, I think we all need to handle the subject of pain medication with a bit more care.

They all make me sleep! Ask any ER I've been to........lol Vicodin used to make me sleepy but now I guess I've just gotten used toit.  Doesn't bother me so much anymore.  Of course, when I need it now it's usually just one, back in the awful days I'd have to take, like four.  Maybe that's the difference!!All pain meds make me sleepy, and if I try to resist giving into going to sleep I will get really really paranoid and seen crazy.

I get sleepy on vicodin and demerol, but flexeril makes me loopy and well...flexible Hi! I take Tylenol Simply Sleep, to help me sleep. For pain I take Vicodin. I have a Pain Management Dr. prescibing my pain meds for now.. Yes I am the other guy that posts once in a great while... LO!! Hi Paul!!!!!!! Hey other guy!!  Nice to see you Hi! Everybody!! I to have Ra. Had it since 2002. Right now I think I might be in remission. I am on weekly Humira, ane MTX 15 mg. once a week. I do now have a bad left hip because of Ra...Well WOOHOO for probable remission!!!!!  Yeah, that is definitly something to get excited about!!  Congrats

Lortab makes me chatty and hyper.

Alan hasn't been around much either, and I think he was doing really well the last time he popped in.  Maybe he's in remission too and out having some fun!

See Chris, things will get better!

peace

Chris

Nope. We're all nut job insomniacs with the same disease. Don't that make ya feel GREAT?? lol

Long time no post, Paul! Glad you crawled outta your shell tonight and posted. We need more guys to post.

Glad to hear you are in a possible remission!

Yeah. I just took a nap too. So, I will be here, awake, for awhile!

Well look who decided to show. 'Bout time Jay ;-)

Where you been Jay?? Dont ya know we talk about ya when your not here

I hope everyone is well tonight.

LOL You almost don't even need to catch up with the silly posts. We mostly just ramble to each other back and forth. LoL Just jump in the convo!!!

I'm hungry and Joonie made me sick but other than that ok

We can all go shopping (code for bar hopping) and make each other handsome(code for get drunk and fight until we get arrested)Dude. I'd join in on that. Wait.........I HAVE done that..........mwuahahaha

LOL Joonie I'm not that sick I'm still hungry

My kind a man Chris!! Not! j/k

Good night, Alan

Moana,

Having a pretty good day. 6 days till Remicade

Chris ,

MTX kind of puts a damper on the drinking, well that and I'm a tight A$$.

Hey Alan glad you joined us.

Alan - Glad Humira is working wonders for you.

Jay - Are your peep shows more than Chris'? His are 25cents. I only have a couple of pennies. I might be able to scrounge up a couple of dimes and a few nickles.

Quick Joonie throw Jay some quarters he's a tighta**

LMAO!! I am outta quaters... how about some pennies! I got a whole roll of them!!

Joonie,

I'll take dollars!!!

I just went and read katie and crispy my space pages. You ladies are busy! I also wanted to welcome Alan to the topic and all the other guys who posted thanks for the support. Now as for the fakies and the realies I have an internal breastometer. "If they too high they don't fly"

heh heh heh

Chris

Hi all,
Glad to see all the men on this thread.  I have spent most of the day sleeping, I caught some sort of "bug" this weekend

Not many fakies around here, but hubby works with a Korean who went and got implants to please her American husband, and was going around asking other women to feel them. Hubby works for Koreans.

Oh and he said she wanted to go to Red Robster to eat. They seem to replace "L" with "R".

  Hope you feel better Mary

Hey Jay! What is etodolac? It sounds like a pain killer but I am not sure I have heard of that one.
You know my dentist is Korean, and his family is his staff. Fun loving bunch of orientals. Professional when they need to be. I live in an area where it is very multiracial. WHen I sold electronics at Monkey Ward back in the day they would say "ohhhh rust rooking" (just looking)

Rust rooking... too funny. Yeah that is how this company is... they make head & tail lights for Hyundai. OMG! I am now a "Senior Member" I guess I need to clean up my act, stop talking about boobie-meters, and not so much bar fights!!!!!

GROW UP!! and put lots a mayo on my BLT would ya. Salt and just a tad of pepperDukes? Never heard of it. I am a Mirical Whip guy. Joonie you have to have a ding-dong stashed somewere???Oh great you saw my myspace. Now you know what a true and total freak I really am. LOL How embarrassing!!!

No, No ding dongs... son ate all of my ding dongs he kept sneaking them and then before I felt like going to see what he got, I knew it was food and figured it was my ding dongs, he had half of it ate. He really ate most of them when hubby was home keeping tabs on him, he just let him eat my ding dongs.

But I have one ding dong left and he is sitting out in the livingroom doozing on the couch. laughing. Okay most of us.LOL I love you too Joonie

I have never eaten a dove bar or a ding dong

I am a ding bat does that count?

Funny Moana.

I think it is bed time for me as well. Good night all.

boooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hiss hiss

Ok night jay

A ding bat is this bat that swooped down to get some water outta our pool that one time I decided to get into it at night, and it hit the water and was drownding and hubby had to get the net and scoop it outta the pool and shuttled it thru the air into the woods.

Now that is my definition of a ding bat.

Moana, my BLT's ALWAYS have extra mayo(Hellmans), soft sunbeam bread, fresh lettuce and only my moms garden fresh tomatoes. I am picky on BLT's. (Ok, I am a picky eater)

Hey Katie, Star Trek is on G4 from 9 until 4 Monday. Then, Spike has Star Trek voyager from 4-6, then Sci-fi has it from 7 to 11. My Tivo is gonna be busy....I love trek!!!!!LOL I'm working tomorrow, damn!!!! Enjoy the marathon for me!!! My brother likes Star Trek. I collect things for him about Star Trek and buses. His 2 favorite things. I need to come up with the money to ship this last box of stuff I collected for him.Star Trek helps take me away from my discomfort and fatigue sometimes. I just really like the idea of meeting new life forms and cruising the galaxy in a really cool ship. It's too bad we can't build anything like that right now, but who knows...look at how cell phones have become part of our daily lives. Back then on trek the communicators were totally fiction. Now we all have them!!!!Hello and Welcome!  I am offline weekends as I use the computer at my office so I am a bit late coming into all this!  I am a 37 year old female but I DO like star trek! Michele you and I just have more and more in common all the time. Where ya been??? And how has Star Trek NOT come up in convo yet?!? LOLWhy do I keep hearing William Shatner singing "He's a Rock It Man. . ." in the background???

oh HELL YES. I love that song..........hahahaha

When I worked at the music store, we used to play Shatner's CD's ALL THE TIME. It was awesome

Thanks Paul. I am Soooooooooo boooooooooooored. My estranged wife is sick too and can't pick me up to go my support meeting at pain management tonight so I guess I am stuck here.

OH MAN, my daughter is a SIMs freak!!! Honest, unto the LORD, she makes cyber clothes for the Sims and sells them to other Sims junkies and has made 5.00 in the past 2 mons. Is that not so wild? Hi! I like Sims to. I have the first Sims, and last week I bought The Sims 2 Deluxe. This one comes with The Sims Nightlife. This game is addicting. I made up a guy that looks almost like me.. LO!

HAHAHAHAHA okay, so I'm evil too......

I usually have the kids sent off to military school.  Or sometimes the welfare dept just comes and takes them away.  Hi!, I Play Half Life games to.Half life...whats that?Ooo Half Life was good. It's been a while though. Last time I played was in college. Justin's not into those kinda games really. Oh well. Doom's still the best!!!Hi Paul!!!! Half Life is awesome too, I just was so involved with Quake and Unreal Tourney that I never had time for it.

Yup. Seems about right. *grins* And I LOVE IT.

I bought the SIMS 2 Deluxe. Too bad it was on my hubbies laptop and now everything is missing. He deleted my SIMS to make more room on his hard drive.

I have been too bummed to install in on my laptop. I liked my house of dead people

Awhile back, somewhere around page 10-12 I think.  You mentioned you saw Katie and "Crispies" (that would be me) my space pages.  I sure would like to know where you located mine, since I don't have one............

Might be interesting to take a look at!!!!!!

Not cool, not cool at all.

Some have to die though.  Especially the kids.  I just don't like sim kids, they just take too much time. LOL, Murderer!!! Hi! On my Sims, I had the guy Sim have one date after anouther.
