MTX and red wine | Arthritis Information

As you all know, the pain and fatigue suck and since there is no cure we just struggle along hoping to get back into remission for a while.  I drink two (sometimes more) glasses of red wine with dinner and look forward to it every day.  It tastes good, makes me relax a bit, and helps me feel somewhat "normal."  I only had one liver problem about 18 months ago while going through the beginnings of a separation, with divorce on the horizon.  I was under sooooo much stress. I was a really bad girl and was having peach flavored Vodka nightly with a friend  (and sometimes alone).  When I found out my liver was "tweaked" I stopped the drinking immediately and started to take an Andrew Lessman vitamin (a liver anti-oxidant) which I get from HSN and have not had one problem since.  I started to drink red wine and have never touched the "hard stuff"since.

I hope to be able to live my life to the best of my ability and pray that the pain will one day ease up, if not go away completely.  I find that my pain is at its worst is in the morning and by about 3 in the afternoon, I start to feel okay.  Not great but at least I can shower and get dressed and am no longer crying in pain.  I find the stress really exaccerbates this disease but, since it is almost impossible to avoid stress completely, I enjoy my red wine and I hope you all will as well.

Hi Frankie and welcome to the website. I quit drinking about 2 years ago because I was worried about all the meds I was taking for ra and the effects on my body. I had a high liver test the time before last. Last time it was 2 points higher then normal but went down from first time. I think if you enjoy a couple glasses of wine and your liver is fine...Go for it!

I am curious too....what is BOOP?Hi Frankie....Welcome to the family!!

Glad you found us. You will find encouragement, understanding, and compassion from most all members....so feel free to jump on in to the water...

By the way...what is BOOP?

I haven't heard of BOOP either.

I've been on MTX for years and I drink several glasses of wine a week. I haven't had any problems so far and hope that continues because I too enjoy relaxing over a glass of wine in the evenings.

Welcome to AI Frankie.

Hello and welcome!

Hi there and welcome.

Is it me or is it just shocking how many RD's take people off meds only to have them come out of remission? This is not the first post that has said as much. I'm intrigued too.... what is BOOP?

My colleague had JRA (Stills disease), then continued onto RA, has had 3 hip replacements, 2 shoulder blade replacements and is on lots of nasty meds and he drinks wine as long as his liver is fine. I suppose a little of what you fancy and all that

Welcome to the forum, frankie!

I hope I can do this if I have to go on medicine. Even two glasses a week would thrill me. Wine is one of the simple pleasures in my life!

Is this the BOOP you have? I was curious, so I googled it. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/bronchiolitis-obliterans/AN 00307

I'm so sorry to hear about the divorce.

Hi and welcome to the board.  Sorry yu had find us, but you will find a lot of caring and support here from very wonderful people.

The opinions on drinking while on mtx vary greatly.  Some docs say don't do it, some docs say in moderation it is ok.  Like anything else, moderation is the key I would guess.  As long as your liver enzymes aren't all out of whack I gues go for those couple of glasses of wine with supper.  Just make sure your doc knows what and how much you are drinking.

Glad you are doing well and not in a whole lot of pain!  That is great!

frankie, good choice on quitting the wine, I know it's hard but your liver will thank you down the road!I'm running my own experiment with MTX and wine.  Last blood work showed my liver number up a little.  The RD asked me if I knew why it might be up.  I said maybe the wine and margarita a couple of days before the blood work?  The RD told me to stop taking Tylenol PM (2 per night) because it was not good for my liver, and to be careful with drinking.  So, for 4 weeks I stopped the Tylenol and the drinking and had a blood test (no result yet).  Now I am having one or two glasses of wine each week (still no Tylenol) and I will have another blood test after 4 more weeks.  I'll be curious to see how the liver numbers look on both those tests.

Hi Frankie...welcome!

I don't drink every week...but I like to have a glass of wine a couple of times per month.  I've so far been ok with that for the last 15 years.

Kelly
