Duke&Doctor radio show slammed Humira | Arthritis Information

DUCK AND DOCTOR RADIO SHOW.  Wow!  I was slammed so badly, my head is still swimming. There is a radio show that I never really listened to that comes on in the morning. It is called the DUKE AND THE DOCTOR and it is on for two hours in the morning nationwide!

Well, dumbo me calls in and gets on and asks the simple question SAYS I  "I am taking a miracle drug that is helping me with rheumatoid arthritis, but I would like to know if there are any supplements I should be taking or not taking with this drug. My rheumatologist said NOT to take echinacea because it affects immune system and I wanted to...........Boom. end of my little chat.

I didn't even get to finish the sentence, when I must have been put on limbo hold because she started slamming what I was saying and I didn't even get to say anything!   First of all, I wish I could have taped it. I'm still shocked.

She said. Well there you go listeners,  I would not tell anyone anything that says a drug is a miracle, but here THIS caller (me!)says HER ILLUSTRIOUS DOCTOR tells her not to take echinacea. Well let me tell you listeners, echinacea is .....and she went on and on about the merits.

Then she said something about her #17 immune support system would help them (obviously NOT ME) and anyone with rheumatoid arthritis can get back to normal by reading up and taking #17. (I don't know what this is and she did not expound. Guess I'm in the dark because I don't listen to the show all the time.  Then the talked a little more about the evils of prescription drugs and before they cut to a commercial, she said "yes listeners, what this person is taking could give her LUPUS, CARDIAC ARREST, HEPATITIS, OH AND TUBERCULOSIS"   and then they cut to commercial.  Well, this is where I should have been doing the LUCKY LUCKY ME DANCE!

But I didn't even get THAT chance!

iI'm still numb with shock. I thought I'd get some friendly advice, she sounded so nice talking.. I wanted to tell her I had tried all homeopathic remedies through the years, but I never even got that far!

Look them up on line Duke and the Doctor. She is apparently a well known doctor in Atlanta and is an expertise in weight management.

However,  I am crushed that she would absolutely DISMISS a listener and not know anything about them.  NOt only was I dismissed, but I didn't even know why.  I know these drug has side effects,  but anyone taking the TNF's read about them and know that they have tried everything else and are desperate.  I had one shoulder replaced, more joints deformed and here she is telling her audience to look at #17 for immune health.

If anyone knows  what she is prescribing, outside of calcium and vitamins, let me know. Maybe I'm missing something great here!

Take care

Joanne

I found theie website and they have an archive of all their shows listed where you can listen to them. They today's and yesterday's and well... everyone of their shows to where you can listen.

http://www.dukeandthedoctor.com/archives.cfm

Joanne,

I'm sorry that happened to you.  I checked out the web site Joonie posted and it seems like Duke and the doc are trying to sell their own form of medicine for Arthritis among other things.  A lot of places to shop there.  I think that your miracle from Humira probably contradicted her "study" and that's why you were cut off so quickly and she tried to discredit you so rudely.  I would ignore that as I think she probably is more interested in selling her product than truly helping people.

No offence, but from an outside view I hope you can see what I'm trying to say here.....

You started off your talk with out even naming what medication you are on. You called it a "miracle drug" Now stop and think of how many scams you've heard about that have claimed the same thing. Humira is a very reputable drug and would not have needed that title in this conversation. It was unnessicary and possibly very misleading that you called it that. She has no idea what drug you are on, because you didn't tell her. Perhaps if you had stated "I am taking Humira, which lowers my immune system and my doctor has advised me not to take echinasia while on it...." You may have had a better response.

Then again, she does seem out for her own agenda, so that may not have gotten you anywhere either. I just wanted you to be aware of how it came across.

arriscolwell - I did not give a word by word conversation above, but I DID tell her it was HUMIRA. In fact when she cut me, she mentioned Humira on the radio.  She knows all about TNF drugs. There was no mistaking.

She is a nutrionist MD for weight counseling etc and her husband, the Duke, owns a chain called Peachtree Natural Foods which is apparently quite large. They are a big nationwide radio show.  Her picture is on the site and she is a great motivational speaker on the radio. That's why I called her. I was looking for guidance.

I started off by saying I was taking a drug that had been a miracle for me called Humira  for Rheumatoid Arthritis. I also said  there are others out there also like Enbrel and Remicade. I was wondering you could tell me what vitamins or supplements I should take or not take like Moducare,  since this involves the immune system and I wanted to be very careful of not taking the wrong things with this drug. I take antioxidants etc. One of the things my doctor said was to  not take echinacea.

Boom ended. I was just dumbstruck.

I was in mid sentence  of telling her that echinacea promoted a healthy immune system and some sites say not to take it with TNF drugs because of the action with the immune system and I wanted to ask her what I should also take that would not be adverse.

I did not know she was totally against prescription drugs when I called. However, I  am going to listen to the show, someone said you can listen to it after it is over. I will.  I want to hear it for myself if I can from a totally different point of view.

I emailed her site today and got an email back with  following information.  'Dear D&D Listener,Thank you for your email. For your condition, Dr. McBarron recommended Immune Formula, Anti-Inflammatory Formula, and Bio-C 1000, all by Vita Logic. She also has Learning Series #17 that goes over the condition. It is an audio educational CD or cassette that covers the topic, what causes it, and how you increase your quality of life and learn to live with this autoimmune disorder. '

If Vitamin C and supplements, etc. can take away my pain and fatigue..wonderful. But, before you can live with an autoimmune disorder, you have to try to get it in control, for the inflammation attacks everything in our bodies.  I've had it for 20 years.  It took me a long time to get to the Humira point, or any TNF drug and even that could stop working anytime.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: Is this  doctor totally adamant against every  prescription drug and she actually thinks that vitamins and supplements and diets, etc is the way to go? I remember a lot of people going to Mexico for anti cancer homeopathic treatments and the infamous peach pit (laetrile)  formula  Steve McQueen went to Mexico for. Sometimes we just have to give in and take a heavy drug. McQueen tried all options; nothing worked. I remember, I even did a story about it long ago when it happened.

I guess what bothers me is the fact that I am a total health nut for decades and have done every homeopathic route for RA, fish oil, grapeseeds, immune supplements, anti immune supplements, you name it, I've done it. I investigate EVERYTHING. And, so do mostly all on this site.

I hate  taking these drugs. I hate it now, but no one has shown me anything that works for me. However, if her books have allowed people to live "normally" with RA, I sure would like to know about it. I'd buy it in a nano second.

HI JOONIE - THANKS FOR RADIO SHOW INFORMATION, AM GOING THERE NOW!

Take care,

Joanne

Ah okay. Now I see more of the picture. What kind of a Doctor is she? Is there any way to find out? You say shes a nutritionist MD.........BUT can't you be a nutritionist WITHOUT the same medical license as a regular doctor? Maybe I'm wrong here......I guess what I'm getting at is...........is she REALLY a doctor at all????

Joanne

Just because she sounds good on a radio show doens't mean she is a good doctor.  I find it interesting that her website fails to address her acadenmic qualifications and only talks about the books she has written.  Its also interesting that the supplements they sell and profit from are all over their website ever before any non-commercial content.

Supplements can be helpful but find a complimentary practioner that will work with you.  Dr's like this McBride lady are no different than doctor's who prescribe based on what their pharm reps push.  The onl difference is that this lady is pushing so called natural stuff.  her interest is the profit.

I just listened to Duke and Doctor  radio show. Wasn't as bad as I viewed it in my mind this morning and I'm glad I got this chance. Thanks Joonie!  But, I did NOT know that just prior to my turning on her show, she was on a rant and rage against BIG PHARMA companies and big lobbyists.  Oh my was she on her soap box BIG TIME and I didn't even know it  and then I pop in!   I am also against BIG PHARMA and lobbyists and frankly, I think we have more in common than I realize, but that is over and done with.

She did say, however, at the end state that her methods would straighten out and correct the immune system. Well, I am going to check that out and see where I went wrong all these years. But just supplements, exercise and diet  is not going to do it, not for me anyway.   I am not going to be repetitive, but I think all of us know that pharmaceuticals push their drugs with their commercials, but millions of us wouldn't be walking around without them either.

...Remember it was only about 15 years ago that pharmaceuticals  were allowed like lawyers, to advertise like they do..and some of the commercials I love to make fun of myself.

.....like just before the END OF THE UPLIFTING, LIFE CHANGING  COMMERCIAL WHEN A WONDERFUL SOOTHING QUIET WOMAN'S VOICE COMES ON AND says calmy, very, very,  calmly ...remember this drug is not for anyone who feels the need to eat daily,  or for anyone who may get visibly upset if their fingernails begin to pop off - and  if you need more than 2 hours sleep a night, then this drug may not be for you.  .......bring music up. The end.

Take care

I went and listened to it and I thought it was as bad as you imagined.  She treated you sarcastically and like an idiot for "oh my God" taking humira and believing in its benefits.  She has an agenda.  To sell her supplements and of course that infamous learning series number 17.  Why didn't she just supply you with the information...because there is no profit perhaps?

buckeye,

I completely agree with you and noticed the same thing you did.  As soon as I logged onto her site it was like a supermarket with all her products.

Katie- you bring up a good point about her medical qualifications.  She may be a nutrionist but what other qualifications does she have in order to say that Humira or any other medication normally prescribed for RA is no good.

Try not to let it upset you Joanna. You've found humira to be your wonder drug and that's wonderful news for you. I'll admit this Radio Show has an agenda but you'll find critics everywhere you go. There's folks here that don't appreciate your success and will try to point out all kinds of bad things about Humia. I'm not one of then....don't get me wrong; I took it with great success for two years.

Not everyones going to be happy your successful with this and only want to prove you wrong. That doesn't change the success you've found. Enjoy while it last and don't let things such as this add more stress to your life.

Thanks Buckeye, sgordon and Lovie!

I just got off their web site of her listed recommendations and the #17 she listed was for osteoarthritis and then I looked at the immune system vitamins and they are the ones I've been taking for many years anyway.   If I were to add up all the expensive vitamins she has listed on her site, it would outrageous.  I have glaucoma and I wonder if she would also be saying I should just take vitamins instead of sight saving medications!  I see she has eye vitamins on there as well.

Also, the one she should have recommended would be her #14 special on immune diseases.  She started out in college for nursing, then went to be a doctor, and they are making millions out of this radio show and their vitamin site.  I just had my husband listen to it and he agreed with you guys. Thanks for listening.  I tried not to judge her and be fair..but, guess you all saw  it how I heard it this morning.

Did I tell you all that Cimzia, another TNF is in the pipeline?

Thanks again!

((((Joanne))))  I'm laughing at your piece about the disclaimer.  :)  Thank you for that.  I'm sorry you had a negative experience with this radio show host/doc.  Sounds like she definitely has a bit off an agenda.  We all know that there are pharmaceuticals that are necessary and quite effective, as well as natural supplements that help as well.  I think it's a bit weird that a doc would discount all pharmaceuticals straight out.

I hope you have a great night!

Jen

Joanne, don't waste another moment of your life on this incident.  You accidently called in to an infommercial and were used to help her sell her products.

There should be a disclaimer that the show is "intended for the sole purpose of providing The Duke and the Doctor with an ever increasing bank account."

It would be interesting if a carefully thought out letter to the editor of your local newspaper were to appear. . .  It would have to be written in such a way that just relates the facts of an experience of a listener in contacting this medical "expert".

She seems almost as good at self-promotion as Martha Stewart!

I would also like to state... their website sucks! It reminds me of used TP.... the brown color and that horrendous nav bar sucks just as much!

You would think with all the money they make they could have gotten a much more user friendly site, that was easier on the eyes.

Hi All:

I looked up Jan McBarron on the State of Georgia's medical licensing site.  Her license was placed on probation for a period of time due to a patient claiming she was dispensing medication without physical examinations and guaranteeing results from the medications and natural alternatives she was pushing on her radio show.

She had to conform to the orders of the medical board including taking continuing education, providing records, paid a ,000 fine, etc.  The suit talks about her diagnosing people over the phone and telling them to discontinue medications.  It talks about many incidents on her programs Rise and Shine and Duke and the Doctor that she has done and said things not considered acceptable for a medical practioner.

http://www.medicalboard.state.ga.us/bdsearch/index.cgi

I would question anything this lady says.  She definitely is pushing her husband's supplements.  I think she's giving medicine and supplements a bad name!  Ugh!

Hugs,

Jen

Well suck my slurpee!  I typed this long freakin' reply and when I hit post reply the page went blank and now my post is lost in never never land.  There's no way my brain can remember what I typed.

I listened to the show and I thought she was a rude insensitive wench personally.  Obviously you called with a serious question seeking guidance from what you thought to be a caring doctor and she reacted like a snot nose.  She made my blood boil.  Wanker of the Week Award goes out to Dr. Radio.

Take care of yourself Joanne and let this experience roll right off.

Peace & Love...Neasy

So she's basically paying for her title of MD, so that poor people will go "oh, but she's a DOCTOR she MUST know what she's doing"

How SICK.

Well done Jen!

I agree Katie!

Jerome, do you have anymore info on Cimzia? My son told me about this drug going into the final clinical trials last year.It is also a drug for Crohns Disease . I ask my ra doctor and he said no,there is no drug called that.So I was just wondering what you knew.

                                                                thanks

your rheumatologist may be more aware of it under its formal name

certolizumab pegol

Thanks Jen for that great update on DUKE and the Doctor. I just listened to the tape again, while it's still available.  If anyone wants to still hear it, I'll give you the site.  My  part was  short and it is at the end of the program. It is the 8/22 Wed. program and I came on at about 1:33 time.  My daughter listened and agreed and said she slammed me and had an attitude.

I would still like to give her the benefit of the doubt, but now after reading what Jen said, I've changed my mind.   Did she assume that I just dumbmindedly strolled into a doctor's office, took an  injection and then went merrily on my way, declaring it a miracle!!

Anyway here is exactly what she said about immune systems yesterday on the radio. After she listed all the horrible things that could happen like cardiac arrest, lupus, risk of death from every day colds and flu, infections.  She then said "for the rest of my listeners (guess not me) this is a gross mistake.  (taking this TNF drug) This is an auto immune disease...that slaps and supresses inflammatory response in the body. The way I would treat rheumatoid arthritis  is  to address the real problem. The immune system is attacking her joints. I would give her things to straighten that out and correct her immune system, not suppress it and then give her something to help her joints and that is all in my Learning  Health Series #17."

I looked up her health series and #17 she listed  is for osteoarthritis. She also has a tape to listen to she sells.

If if anyone thinks they can straighten out my immune system with Vitamin C and other supplements of that nature, good luck. I have been trying this for years in megadoses like C, etc.  I just haven't used her expensive vitamins. There isn't one homeopathic remedy I have not tried.

Have to admit, however, I have not done the Mediterrean Diet. Has anyone out there tried it?

Also, regarding Cimzia, maybe others who, as I said, can't afford the new TNF drugs, could call their doctor's office and ask the nurses where the research labs are in your area. If the doctor thinks you are a candidate, they call him and if they need some people, that is one way to get the drug for nothing.

Till next time, Take care, Joanne

I've not tried a specific "mediterranean diet", but we do follow a mediterranean-type dietary pattern

- liberal use of olive oil
- limit red meat
- lots of fruit/vegetables
- fish
- fish oil supplements
- moderate alcohol (a glass of beer or wine most evenings)

I do notice that I have more pain when I deviate from this basic plan.
JasmineRain39317.229849537

Jasmine Rain. Thanks for update. I don't eat enough fruits/vegetables, but I do take citrus bioflavonoids and other supplements, just in case. Regarding olive oil, I never fully realized ALL the different types of olive oil out there until I started checking. Thanks

JoanneThe articles for that drug you mentioned are very old.......I have a bad feeling about that. They sound like the goal was to be the first injection treatment approved for Chrons, but Humira just got that title this past Feb. Which makes me wonder if Cz...whatever is still even in the works. Can anyone find any more recent article?

Well..she does have a new york accent

She sounded like she was mad at you. My gosh, she was soo judgmental

I use supplements every single day, and they definitely do help.  But for a disease like RA, the goal is to stop the progression and damage. Supplements and diet alone cannot do that.

By recommending that people not use the treatments recommended by their doctors, and just use their supplements, they are very possibly pushing people into suffering permanent, irreversible damage.  I think their actions border on criminal.  It makes me very angry.

I just listened to the program, Joanne, and I'm totally disgusted with this "doctor".  She's a jerk and she has no respect for other people.  She talks in circles, doesn't address questions and pushes her products.  All I can say is ick.  I'm so sorry that that happened to you.  You had a very valid question and she was a real boob.  Sending you lots of hugs.

Jen

the drug is stillinthe works.  The were a lot of studies out about it during the EULAR conference in June.  I just chose the article that was written in the most English.

UCB is planning to submit it for approval for RA sometime later this year.  These filings/approvals tend to happen around the ACR meeting in Nov

Thanks all above for listening and giving your comments on DUKE and the DOCTOR. I have a feeling we will not be seeing the end of her. I feel a lot better reading this site after posting what happened, for it was a bummer when it happened. By looking at her pictures, I know women like her and I can just see  her making her very opinionated comments with the authoritative manner of speaking ...we peons know nothing, but she knows all!

Also when Jennifer says she was up on charges and on probation,  this was pretty much the same as what she was doing to me, but I never got that far, since I was not a patient!    Also, their vitamin site is very expensive and is no matter than any other on line.

Thanks to all!

Joanne

Joanne,

She was SO RUDE!  The "hell bent" comment was totally uncalled for.  Then, she went on to say RA was "just" an autoimmune disease - stressing "just" like it's nothing.

Made me mad!   Wow.  What a real witch that woman was to you.  I really feel like the others do here that she is really just promoting herself and her own products.  I totally agree that supplements are very good for you and that you have to watch what you take so you do not boost your immune system too much.

Just because someone has the intitials M.D. behind their names does not make them smart or even know what they are doing.  It's like the old joke....What do you call the person that graduated last in their class in medical school?  Doctor.

All I can say is UGH...

She did sound like she was a self-promoting witch! It is scary to think some people may listen to that kind of garbage and take it for truth, afterall, some people believe the MD means they are all knowing....

Buckeye - thank you. :)I wish I could hear it....I have no speakers.
