How much are your taking and what overall results are you seeing? Did it help with swelling or did it reduce the pain or both? Thanks.i take a liquid fish oil. 15ml a day. it helps with both swelling and pain. i didnt realise how well it worked until i got lazy and didnt take it for a few weeks. I found out it was working really well.I wish it worked for me but sadly not. Neither does Glucosamine. I've given them both more than a fair go and taken both for well over a year but I can truthfully say it's made no difference to me what so ever :( Oh well, onwards and upwards! There must be something out there worth a go!

Anyone tried Chinese herbal remedies?
I normally take 8 grams a day - 4 in the AM and 4 in the PM.  I take the enteric-coated capsules - they open up in the small intestine and don't cause "fish breath" and upset stomach like the immediate-release products.  Like Allycat said - I didn't know how well it was working until I stopped taking it for a few months.  The pain and stiffness gradually came back.

One word of caution - recently I switched from regular fish oil to "fish oil concentrate", which has a higher amount of the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA.  They are in ester form instead of acid form.  Anyway, I found that these gave me a great amount of intestinal distress.  Seems I had trouble digesting them.  Without going into detail, I experienced the same side effects as people who use Olestra (undigestible fake fat used in diet snacks) and Alli (diet drug that blocks absorption of fat in the intestines).  I'm back to regular enteric-coated fish oil and am working back up to 8 grams a day now.

My husband also takes fish oil (2g/day) for cardiovascular health.  He also takes 200mg coenzyme Q10.  His medical team is simply amazed at how well he is doing; his cardiologist attributes a large part of his success to my insistence he take Coenzyme Q10 and fish oil as soon as he came home from the hospital after his cardiac arrest.
I have been taking 2 grams a day for a couple of years now.  I have not noticed any improvement as far as inflammation and pain go but I do have a good cholesterol level and BP.  Considering my family history of heart disease I will stay on Omega 3 for that reason alone.  If it helps other things great, but I mainly take it for heart health and I'm sure it makes a difference there.I did not notice any improvement when I was just taking one or two capsules per day.  It was not until I took 6 or more per day that I felt a noticeable improvement.  As with anything, talk with your doctor(s) if you decide to take more than a couple of grams per day. it was my rheumatologist who started me on the liqid oil at my first visit. I use two glasses .one tiny shot glass and another normal one . i put 15mls oil in the shot glass with a small ammount of milk on the top . in the other glass i have about 150mls milk. i used to use orange juice but found it would reflux. but with the milk i have no problems. my rheumy said to get the same antiimflammatory effect from the capsules, i would have to take about 20 a day . This oil is also recommended by the australian arthritis foundation.Itis norwegian omega fish oil EPA18/DHA12. sorry forgot to explain what to do next. first i scull the oil and milk in one gulp that way you dont taste it then i sip the milk in the larger glass slowly letting it touch the lips and inside mouth. there will be no fish oil taste and no reflux.I take 10 1gram capsules a day. Each capsule contains 300mg EPA/DHA. I
take 5 in the morning and 5 at night.

I only use fish oil made from the body of the fish. Fish oil made from the
liver has too much vitamins E and A in it.Hi Caprice, I'm taking 3400 mg. fish oil get caps once a day.  Lindy LinB39321.429224537Here's an old thread with an in-depth discussion of fish oil

I take 2 Nordic Natural Omega 3 capsules a day.  This is 330mg of EPA and 220mg of DHA.

I haven't noticed much difference in my RA symptoms but have successfully lowered my cholesterol and BP.

Hope this is helpful.

My BIL started taking fish oil for cardiovascular health at his doctor's order. When I saw some folks here were using them, I figured it couldn't hurt for the possible RA or for the fact that heart disease runs in my family.

Last Wednesday, I think it was, I started fish oil concentrate softgels at 3000 mg (3 softgels)/day. By the weekend, I noticed less stiffness in my body, especially in the AM, and the pain in my knees (yes, my KNEES! FINALLY!) is a lot better.

Don't know if it's just my hope and sheer will that made this work, but--hey--I'll take what I can get. Good luck to anyone thinking of trying them!

By the way, my BIL's doctor said to store the supplements in the freezer if you can't stomach the smell or taste. It seems to work!

Edited to add: for those who mentioned stomach upset, were you taking them with food? I spread my three a day out to have with meals. Not sure if that will make a difference... but good luck! :)

drmalcolm39343.3360300926Oh yeah, I forgot to mention after taking 10 grams a day for 3 months I noticed a HUGE difference in the amount of inflammation I was having.

One thing, though, is fish oil thins your blood so if you're going to have any kind of surgery you should stop taking it about 6 weeks before.
Christina - there are enteric-coated capsules available.  These eliminate the "fish burps" and indigestion, because they don't dissolve in the stomach.  They release in the small intestine.  Not only does this eliminate the nasty aftertaste, but it also allows increased absorption. I wish I could give it a try, but because it thins the blood, it's a definite no no with my low platelets. My mom has osteo and says the fish oil, glucosamine and chondroitin seems to help with the swelling in her handsI also take about 2400mg of fish oil.  I have to be careful, 'cause I do take a mild blood thinner for another lovely condition....yep caused by this disease.  Although I have lowered my cholesteral...and for once in my life the good Chol. is in the normal range.  I take a slug of Udo's 3-6-9 Omega every day, but I was forced into healthy eating at age 16 when my father got sick, so I have been into vitamins, herbs, colonics, sound healing, oils, ear candling, etc. for decades now.  I truly believe that vitamin deficiencies are at the root of our problems as a whole.  Vets figured this out on farm animals about 100 years ago, and the earliest medical doctors practiced homeopathy.
