Stress fracture saga! | Arthritis Information

Yes my stress fracture in my right foot since Easter Saturday has not improved one iota, a recent bone scan showed it has worsened a little, so today I saw my rheumy and otrhopaedic surgeon, no.1 I have to   purchase and wear a maxtrax air boot for minimum 6 weeks but possibly up to 4 months!!!!!!!  The ortho said because of my pred and osteoporosis it may never heal properly.  I am so dying to get back to my walking to lose some weight and to spend some time with my kids doing something physical.

My rheumy has filled out the paperwork for RITUXIMAB and I should be able to have it done in approx 2-3 weeks.  I hope so as I have to stop my antiinflammatories again due to severe tummy pain and other problems.  Anyone know where I can get one of those boots, I have found some online, they are pretty expensive.  Thanks for listening - tried to get the RITUXIMAB for the same day as you Cordy, but couldn't be done, I had already ordered the pizza and beer!!!!!!!  Oh well, I'll have to have it on my own I guess, lots of love to everyone, Janie.
Oh, Janie,

I am sorry it wasn't better news for you today. Hang in there, sweetie.

I think we will have to insist on being infused on the same day from the next round on, Janie. It would be a hell of a lot more fun than doing it by ourselves I think they would be very sorry, with your nutty sense of humour and my constant jokes and irish humour they will probably banish us to Caboolture!!!!!  Thanks Cordy, I am not too surprised, just terribly frustrated and for some reason, today I am missing my mum terribly more than usual, since her passing in January, I feel like I am coping quite well since she was my idol and I never thought I would be able to cope without her,  but sometimes it sneaks up on me and its like she passed on only yesterday.  I guess she was always there for me when I had bad news, I could phone her anytime and even though it was all so complicated, she did her best to understand and did that so very well.  Oh well, lets hope tomorrow is a better day.  Thanks again, hope all is getting back to norm for you.  Hang in there, Janie.  Yeah, I know you were basically expecting that dx today but that doesn't take away the frustration.

Amazing what brings up grief and how griefs intermingle and entwine around each other. The way you were feeling and it bring up your Mum's absence. I am so lucky to still have mine...I imagine it takes some coming to terms with especially if you've been close. Loss is never easy and we have so much of it with RA, sometimes more is just too much.

Sorry to hear you are still dealing with the stress fracture Janie. It's been a long Spring/Summer for you and it seems it's going to be even longer!

Will your insurance not pay for the boot? Seems like if this is something you have to have to correct this injury it should pay. I can't figure this insurance stuff out! The things you think it should pay for it won't and the things you expect it won't pay for it does. Who makes these rules anyway? I can imagine your frustration.

Hang in there Girlie.

Janie that is so frustrating, I'm really sorry you received such disappointing news about your foot.

I did a quick check, and there is someone selling them on ebay.com, so that might be a place to purchase them.  I'm afraid I don't know the exchange rate, but it looks like you could purchase one for about US dollars.

Good luck too you.  I really hope the boot helps you heal!

Janie,

So sorry to hear that the healing isn't going along as it should.  It's got to be frustrating regardless of the expectation of bad news.  I think even though we expect it, it's still quite a downer to have our expectations confirmed.  I can understand your feeling the loss of your Mom at this time.  I lost my Mom in Sept 2006.  When my Isabel was diagnosed with lead posioning, I very much wanted my Mommy.  I was so scared and she was the one I turned to during times such as that.  I went through the same grieving then as well.  Hope you can find an inexpensive boot.  And I am also surprised insurance doesn't cover it.

Take care of yourself.

Steph

So sorry Janie.  Did the Ortho give you any indication where to get these?  He should have referred you to a clinic that does have these boots.  Check with your Hospital pharmacy...they may have one.  Insurance should cover this.  Check with them before you order it.

I think it would be very theraputic for you and Cordie to be together when you are infused.  I need an infusion buddy!!!!

Thanks everyone, you are all so wonderful and I shall take on all your advice, there, I feel better already!!!!  Love coming out to you all guys, Janie. Well, you'd be surprised how active you can be with those casts on:) I've broken my feet (stress fractures in 2nd, 4th, and 5th metatarsals) a total of six times (am currently in a boot for double fx's) and have worn those boots for months on end. They're really not too bad:) I just try to remind myself that they're MUCH better then the real cast, since you can take it off to shower, swim, etc. I do a lot of bike riding, both outside and stationery with the boot on.  I know we even have a picture somewhere of me playing softball with not one but two boots on. I am also an early childhood teacher and so a lot of playing with the kids. The kids call them my "big boot." They've gotten to the point where they just go, "You hurt your foot AGAIN???" So, I know its frustrating but don't get too discouraged. They're not so bad:)
Take Care!
Nichole
