Hello everyone I hope you all are well I am currently taking 7.5 mg of MXT and 3 mg of folic acid I have read on this list not to take them both on the same day my Dr never told me this does everyone do this?  Now for the stupid question I take my MXT with  Benadryl before bed do I skip my folic acid that morning or the morning after I take it see I said it was stupid LOL

One more weekend until the BENNYS go home YEAH!!!!!!!!!

I actually asked my Dr this today when i saw him what i should do about the folic acid on the day that I take the Mtx, and he said that theres no real reason to not take it on the day you take Mtx.  I know a lot of drs that other members have have said not to take it and others say do take it.  I guess its depending on the way each individual dr perceives it.  Have you talked to your RD about it yet?  Hi Linda! I take injectable methotrexate, but am not on folic acid so I can't help you with your question. I'm sure you'll be getting a lot of responses though, as MANY here take both.

I take both on the same day, i have never had any problems yet

but that's what my RD told me to do.

Have a nice night.

Regards,

Melly

My doc has me doing the MTX in the AM on Sunday and I take the folic acid at supper every day. She said that doing it that way is fine.  I do mine on Sun. (with food) as well but still take the folic. I do my MTX on Thursday, and still take my Folic acid.  If I don't take the folic acid I wake up with a mouth sore.  My rheumy and GP say take the MTX Thurs am and folic acid 12 hours later, same for me if I don't take Folic acid, I get mouth sores. Best of luck Janie.

TO ALL  and to MELLYMEL.  Mellymel, if your doctor says to take the folic acid on the same day as the MTX, he DOES NOT know what he is talking about. IS HE A RHEUMATOLOGIST?   IF NOT, GET ONE!

I cannot believe any doctor would make a statement like that

TAKE THE PRESCRIBED METHOTREXATE WHICH IS ONE GRAM, NOT 3 MG AS STATED ABOVE.  You also get some in your daily vitamins etc.  DO NOT TAKE IT THE DAY OF THE INJECTION OF TAKING MTX PILL.  IT INTERFERES WITH ABSORPTION OF THE MTX. BUT YOU HAVE TO TAKE folic acid all the time, except for that day, to counteract anything this MTX might do to harm the liver.  You can take it about 9 to 12 hours later. I always take more than prescribed daily. It also prevents mouth sores. People DO NOT realize how important folic acid is to the body.

THAT IS WHY I ALWAYS TAKE MILK THISTLE AND TMG.  TMG, a supplement also helps with homocysteine levels And, milk thistle, of course, cleanses the liver of toxics.  I've been doing this for years, even when I wasn't taking MTX.

Take care,Joanne

My RD said to take my folic acid EVERY DAY.

A doctor at Johns Hopkins recommends it every day too.

Methotrexate
By Alan K. Matsumoto, M.D. (31-Aug-2005)

I take 12.5mg of methotrexate per week for rheumatoid arthritis. I also take 1mg of folic acid every day except on the day I take the methotrexate and the day after. In the fall I also take a multi vitiman which contains 0.4mg of folic acid. Is that to much folic acid to take and can it cause the methotrexate not to work as well? Should I also not take it on the day of the methotrexate and the day after?

Folic acid supplementation should not effect MTX. I do not ask patients to stop Folic acid on the days they take MTX, although some rheumatologists do. I frequently increase folic acid above 1 mg per day to reduce side effects such as mouth ulcers.

JOanne,

most of us see rheumatologists and almost all of us  that take folic acid  do so on the same day as the MTX.  Just beause you disagree with that does not mean the practice is incorrect.   In fact my doctor who help author a study on folic acid and MTX several years ago says to take them on the same day. Yes I know that MTX is a folate inhibitor but our doses of MTX also take that into consideration

The dose of folic acid can also vary based on each individual needs.  People who are actively experiencing side effects may be prescribed more than the U.S. standard of 1mg.  If you are prescribed the leucovorin it is always in a greater amt than 1mg.

Taking folic acid with MTX is not a world wide standard so some people may not even be taking folic acid along with it.

I agree with Buckeye.. Every doctor has different way of thinking that is why it is called a practice.  There is no cut and dry way of practiceing medicine.  There is a reccomended way but each dr has had their own expierence with this medication.  If anyone has any questions regarding when they should take certain medications asking on here is great because at least one person is on that medication BUT it is still a good idea to make a quick call to your dr.   That is why they are here, to answer our quesions if need be.  Or even call the pharmasisit if you have a quesion in regards to whether or not your meds have an interaction like with Katie and her antidperessent and another med.  Even though advice from those that are actually on the med is great, it still does not stand in the place of asking your doctor. I've been taking mtx for 15 years and have always taken my folic acid everyday with no problems.  This was the advice of my rheumatologist.

Same here. I've been on it I guess about 5 years now and I also take Folic Acid everyday.

If you hang around here long enough you'll notice that many doctors differ on many different issues. Who's to say which doctor is right and which is wrong? Surely not me.

Jerome,

Thanks for supplying your information on the whole mtx w or w/o folic acid issue. I do think it is necessary to take responsibility for our healthcare into our own hands (at least now that I have this disease I have gotten the wakeup call and come to realise how imprtant it is anyway).

However, my Doc who obviously thinks differently than your Doc is a Rheumatologist. And on this particular issue, they (the RDs really seem to be just split down the middle) so it is hard to say what is right for sure here. I am not am a huge fan of my RD for other reasons and am actively shopping for a new one BUT I did also check with my pharmacist (who has a more than the usual vested interest in me as he happens to be my BIL) as well though and he also was of the opinion that it is only a concern at the higher doses needed for cancer).  So I "dunno" for sure of course but I am comfortable with this regimen as a result of my BILs opinion

Regards,

Melly

Your BIL being a pharmacist will be so helpful Melly. I've formed a very positive relationship with my pharmacist and I've learned what an asset that can be with all the prescription medications I have to use. Knowing that you can count on yours night and day is going to be so helpful. You're very fortunate.

Thank You:

To all of you who answered I never asked my RD outright his opinion on this matter but he did write my prescription for one every day so I am to assume he wants me to take it every day I will continue to take my MXT at bedtime and my folic acid in the morning and hope for the best my mouth sores have gone away I hope with the increase in the MXT they do not come back I hope everyone has a happy an d safe labor day weekend

Hi, I take the folic acid every day , no matter what else I'm taking. Lynda

I take mine every day.  There is an issue with people thinking that their doctor is correct and all others don't know what they are talking about.

Our diseases may share the same name, but our personal situations are all different.

I'd advise anyone to take information here, but to talk to your doctor before you change your scheduled medicines.  That's just my opinion.
