BUTT PAIN ANYONE? | Arthritis Information

OK This is my unofficial poll.  I am doing much better today but my butt is constantly aching.  This never happened before ra.  My rheumy acts like it is not his concern.  It is one of the more irritating aspects since ra dx- seems to hardly ever go away.  I am wondering if it is ra related.  Anyone else associate ra with butt pain?PS  Kathy, rd refused to give me a cortisone shot in butt.  I tried !

Yes Roxy,

I have had butt pain since before the RA and Fibro dxs. Sometimes it feels like a heavy slab of meat. Its so sore I can sit on it for a long time. I dont know if its more my Fibro pain or pain from having a monthly cycle(although I get the but pain anytime).

So have no fear. Your not the only one with a pain in the buttt!

A couple of weeks after starting all these RA meds, it went away.  Guessing the predisone is helping it, since I went off mxt 2 weeks ago and butt still ok.

Hope your pain subsides, too.

We had a poll recently as to what hurts most etc.......??  Well Roxy, don't know if it's sympathy pain or not, but my butt has been killing me lately!!!

My major pain is like in hip socket, actually more like a deep ache.  Hips, shins, and shoulders the worst.  I was supposed to have Rheumy appt today but got tied up with a client and running late by 30 min.  Called to make sure she could still see me and nurse said no; had to reschedule.   (SHE KEEPS ME WAITING ALL THE TIME BUT i'M LATE BY 30 MINUTEDS AND SHE CANCELS APPT.)

The shot I had that helped the butt pain was more over toward the hip. I think there is a muscle the piriformis - that attaches to the top of the thigh bone and across the back to the spine that causes the pain.

...The piriformis syndrome is a condition in which the piriformis muscle irritates the sciatic nerve, causing pain in the buttocks and referring pain along the course of the sciatic nerve. This referred pain, called "sciatica", often goes down the back of the thigh and/or into the lower back. Patients generally complain of pain deep in the buttocks, which is made worse by sitting, climbing stairs, or performing squats.

...Anatomically, the piriformis muscle lies deep to the gluteal muscles. It originates from the sacral spine and attaches to the greater trochanter of the femur, which is the big, bony "bump" on the outside top of the thigh. The sciatic nerve usually passes underneath the piriformis muscle, but in approximately 15% of the population, it travels through the muscle. It is thought that acute or chronic injury causes swelling of the muscle and irritates the sciatic nerve, resulting in sciatica. Patients with an aberrant course of the nerve through the muscle are particularly predisposed to this condition.

I think the major butt pain comes from arthritis in the hips.  My hips have been the worst for me since day 1 and my butt hurts terribly sometimes.  I read somewhere when it first started that arthritis in the hips can cause pain in the butt and thighs, so I have always just assumed that it was coming from the hips.......what's the old saying "don't assume.....

Roxy, I'm sorry you're still having achy breaky pain there.  Yesterday afternoon I got pain so bad on my right side from my hip to the sacrum down my leg I couldn't lay, sit breathe.  I took a 10 mg. flexeril and a darvocet and a little while later I think I was too dopey to remember the pain (my hubby thinks I'm a cheap date).  Today I'm still drugged, my doc wants me to keep taking the same amounts of drugs.  How do you survive.

ME TOO!  I figured it was sciatica caused by whatever is going on in there - my rd said it is because i'm limping. She wouldn't give me shot either - said she didn't want to hit the nerve....I'd have to go to a pain clinic for that.         & nbsp;    Oddly enough it comes & goes but is really painful when it's there

My shoulders are really bothering me right now, but my rheumy appt is tomorrow!  Wheeeee!

Lulu

oh thank you guys I AM NOT CRAZY !!!!!!!  I had a semi normal day today which means I got to do things besides laying in my recliner.  It actually felt good to clean my house, laundry, do errands and take my dogs for a walk.  My butt ache seems to always be there.  I can't sit in straight back chairs more than 15 min.  I NEED MY RECLINER!!!  I just wanted to check in with the real experts.  My rd looks at me like "get over it" whenever I mention my butt pain.  He refuses to address it.  At least I am not alone.  The pain is deep down, like on my sitting bones and there is pain on the top of my thighs.  I hope that I can get some suggestions at the pain clinic eventually.  Thanks you guys.  I was really wondering if I had to get another diagnosis for being "a pain in the butt"!!!!!

Should be interesting

Roxy, I get pain in the buttocks when my hips are hurting and like everyone else has said, I also get pain in the upper thighs.

Roxy,

I get pain in my butt too, glad to know I am not crazy

After I had my first daughter I had to have a plynidodle cyst (or however you spell it )removed off my tail bone and so now I have trouble sitting for long periods of time. So I bought a bum pillow and that helps alot. You know the ones with the hole back where your bum sits. Well maybe you should invest in one of those pillows. It only cost me 14.95.

Rox, about 3 years ago I had trouble with my sciatic nerve. Neither pain pills nor muscle relaxers worked. Some peculiarities with me were: I was mostly bothered when I was driving. It usually started to bug me after about 10 minutes behind the wheel. The pain started in what I call the “butt bone” which is probably part of the pelvic bone group. As time wore on, the pain migrated to the back of my thigh, sometimes the knee and sometimes the ankle. ALWAYS on the right side, which I believe is typical for sciatic nerve trouble. My GP said to try a chiropractor. I did around 8 sessions with him and decided that I was not getting any relief.

After about 8-12 months, it went away. Now, mind you, it was not intense enough for me to really worry about it, it was more of an aggravation than a life altering pain.

I think I read an online article about the relationship between sciatic nerve irritation and RA. Maybe it is all related. Sorry I can’t offer more than my personal experience. Take care.

Thanks Ronda.  I will look into it.  All this stuff still makes me feel self conscious.  I don't want people to look at me like I am "old and disabled".  STILL ADJUSTING
