OT - More Toy Recalls | Arthritis Information

I just heard on today's news that more Mattel toys are being recalled for lead paint.  I am really beginning to worry more about this whole issue and just how big it is.

My youngest child is now 17 and has been diagnosed with ADD.  The more I hear about this issue, the more I begin to wonder about my children and children everywhere.  My kids grew up on toys made in China.  When my daughter was little she used to say she wanted to move to China, because that's where all the toys are!

We are just learning about this issue now, and with just one manufacturer.  But I wonder, how many of our children have grown up with lead paint all over their toys?  I am considering having my 17 year old tested.

What do you guys think about this?

I think it is very scary Karen and you know the problems I'm having with Trey! He had these toys too and was always chewing on something

Someone's child on here has lead poisoning but I can't remember who it is. Maybe someone else does.

Maybe a Good Time for an American Toy Company to arise from the ashesHi Hillhoney. I was just listening to this this morning also and like you,
am concerned. I have bought many of the Geo trax, barbies, petshop, etc
for my grandkids. 4 out of 5 toys sold in the US, come from china.
Makes me wonder how far back this has gone on. My youngest also has
ADD although she has grown up a wonderful, productive, beautiful good
person. Through her childhood, I didn't think she would turn out so good
because of all the behavioral problems. She played with many of those
toys on the list so it does make you wonder not only about toys, but
many other products that have been produced in other countries and I'm
sure there are many more reports to come. I am shopping more carefully
now and although it can be done, there are still lots of products made in
the USA. For example, the socks I just paid 15 dollars a pair for, lol.
They are light weight wool but last forever. The point I am trying to make
with that is, made in the USA comes with a hefty price tag and not many
people can afford to shop at these type of stores. I don't think any of my
wardrobe was made here.   I'm glad you made this post. Hopefully people
will keep us all abreast of the latest products for those that may not
watch much TV or don't get the paper. Thanks for posting.

Hi everyone,

I'm carefully watching this to make sure that none of the toys my Isabel has is on this list.  She already has lead posioning from the paint in the house so I certainly don't want another bout of this.  This is very scary as lead posioning can cause some serious developmental, physical and emotional issues. I also wonder how long this has gone one.  Scary stuff!  I think from now on, I'll pay the price for made in the USA toys from now on.

Paying for things made in America is another way to keep jobs in America. Do your research though, because things made in "free trade zones" in other countries can be labelled "Made in America" even though they weren't manufactured on American soil.

I buy many things Made in Canada, even though they might cost a bit more, and I try to buy only local produce as well.

If something is a bargain you can be sure someone else will be paying the difference, whether it's the poorly paid factory worker who made it or lead eating children.
The thing about lead is that a child doesn't even have to be a "chewer".  That is just the most common way for children to get it.  They can get lead dust on their hands and if they put their hands in the mouth with it on them, then they've ingested lead.  Also because it's dust, it can be airborne and they can inhale it.  Just a scary bunch of business here with these toy companies.  One after the other are coming forward with lead in the toys they have manufactured. After my daughter ran a Fun Run at a 5K, Reebok gave them necklaces. Hubby was like, 'Look, a dolphin!', and I said toss it, it is probably full of lead. The very next day there was a picture of it on the news!!!

Lead testing - when you go for checkups, don't they always ask if you live in an older house that could have lead paint? I'm thinking I might be vague about that answer, and see if I can get my kids tested anyway. We have almost every recalled toy, and the Dora and Diegos were my daughter's favorites. Lord knows they get enough of her blood, anyway.

GoGo is right about 'made in' labels. There are all kinds of loopholes. Parts could be painted in one country, assembled in another. When I worked for an apparel manufacturer, the joke was what globe-trotters our cheap pants were. Zippers here, buttons there, fabric here, sewn there, packaged here, on a boat from God-knows-where.

Gimpy I have to pick on something you said, cause I just couldn't get the image out of my head:

"lead eating children"

All I can see is this massive Lead beast, running around downtown picking up random children and ingesting them.

I know I totally hijaked the thread, I'm sorry. I just thought I'd throw some humor out there..sorry!!!!!! What kind of China dishes? Like good good china? Or like....Corelleware cheapy Made-In-China kind of dishes?? Cause that's what we have always used. Isn't Corelleware made in china?? I might be wrong.Katie, I would be suspicious of any dish made in China. Or anything at this point. LOL Yeah I'm starting to think that too.... *sigh*
