Hi guys, just staring Placquenil today and wondered if anyone out there is on it and what their experiences with it have been. Thanks for all your help. Evei.

ra, oa, heart problems, hypertension.         ;           ;
Methotrexate, prednisone, placquenil, vicodin, bp meds, and a heart med, digoxin.

Hi Evei,

Plaquenil was the first medication I was put on.  I didn't do much for me so my doctor added MTX which helped.  I later decided to go off the plaquenil and had to eventually go back on it tho.  Eventually other meds where added and seem to be working.

I haven't heard of too many ppl who have luck with just plaquenil.  Usually something else is added.

Hoping it works for you

Kelly

Hi Kelly, Thanks for your reply. I'm also on metho. Have been for 5 years. I'm taking 10-2.5 pills once a week now. was taking 8 and the dr just increaesed it to 10. i hope the combination of the two drugs will do the trick. Thanks again and I hope you're doing well now.
If I may ask, what other drugs are you on with the MTX and Placquenil? The dr wants me to try to get on the Enbrel program. I can't afford it and my ins. doesn't cover it, so 'm looking for assistance. Thanks again and have a good day. Evei [QUOTE=kelstev]

Same thing here. It was the first thing I was put on before MTX back in 1993. It didn't do anything for me so my then RD took me off of it and started MTX.  Didn't have any side effects.

Good luck to you evei.

Evie,

Sorry...didn't read the bottom of your post saying you were on MTX.  Hopefully the addition of the plaquenil will help.

Right now I'm taking 25mg MTX/wk, plaquenil, Sulfasalazine and celebrex.

Kelly

Hi Evie,

I am not on plaquenil, but am going for my 2nd RD visit today and I'm pretty sure that his plan is to start me on that.  It's a little discouraging, as many posts say it does'nt do much

Years ago the first one I had was sulfersalazine. Once it started to lose it's effect we added Plaquenil. That combination worked well for me at the time; but it would do nothing for me today. Eventually what I'm taking now won't work that well and I'll have to change to something else.

If at all possible these drugs that are considered "weaker" are a good first choice. You've got a long life ahead of you with this thing. No need to bring out the big guns if the smaller ones will do the job; know what I mean?

Now if they aren't helping you...that's a different story.

Pam,  I am taking plaquenil and the good news is NO SIDE EFFECTS!!!!  I figure anything you take for ra that doesn't give you side effects is JUST WONDERFUL Hi guys, thanks for all the input. Like I said, I also take 25 mgs of mtx. So I'm hoping the combination will help. I was dx in 2000 and put on mtx immediately. It did great for a while and I felt like my old self. But lately it's been rough. Had a very long flare. So far I've had no side effects today on the Placquenil. I just hope together they help me. I would love to do some of the things I used to do.         &nb sp;         &nb sp;
Thanks for all the messages. You guys are great.

Evei I am on Plaquenil and for the first week or so I had reeeeally smelly gas

Im on Plaquenil as well. So far no bad side effects to report. Unfortunately cant say its doing a whole lot of good either. But I just started on it about 2 months ago, so I guess its still gonna take awhile for it to really work. Im also on Predisone too so I cant say actually wether Plaquenil is helping or not. Hang in there with it, hopefully you will get the full results of it soon!

Shawnie

Hi Shawnie, thanks for the good wishes. I hope the plaquenil begins to work for you too. Are you on mtx? I think these two drugs work best together. Take care, Evei.

No Evei Im not on MTX. I think my doc is trying to allow time to see if the Plaquenil will work. This is the first drug Ive ever been on specifically for RA. Also she wanted to see my previous med records before she started me on anything stronger. Lets hope it works. I have an app. w/ my doc the 23rd of this month, will see then if she starts me on mtx or something else w/Plaqueinl.

This is for you Albear

I was on Plaquenil along with Asulfidine for about a year and it did no harm but it also did no good.  If you find it works for you and you stay on it, may sure you get the recommended eye exams yearly.  Any damage the Plaquenil causes is reversible as long as it is caught early.
Good luck with it.  If it works for you, it has the advantage of being relatively inexpensive.

Hi Karen, I've been on mtx for 5 years and have had very good results till this past Summer. I've been in a really bad flare for about three months. So the doctor added the Plaquenil and I'm hoping it will help. He also increased the mtx to 10 pills once a week. I've only been on this amount and the Plaquenil for 4 days, so I really don't know yet. Wish me luck.         & nbsp;
I hope you can find something that will help you soon.
Take care, Evei.

I am another RA-er who takes MTX (10 mg qwk) and Plaquenil with much success.  Since 2000 I have been taking the Plaq (200 mg bid) and started the MTX the following year when all the pain was not handled.  I've had hiatuses from both meds, but when I am on both, I notice that I do much better.

Molly Bee

Hi Molly Bee, thanks for the encouraging words. I'm so happy that the mix has helped you. I feel some hope now. Most of the input I've received is negative about the Plaquenil....but I don't know all the circumstances of these opinions ie....are they also on MTX etc...
How long did it take for you to notice a difference with the Plaquenil? Best to you, Evei.

Hi Evei,

Glad you found encouragement!  I found the Plaq worked better as a combo med...and yes MTX was and remains my other med.  It took a few weeks for me to notice improvement for MTX, but it seemed to be faster for the Plaquenil.  I did note that when stopping the Plaq, the flare which ensued came on within a couple of weeks..maybe 3 weeks.  Not sure.

Hope it all works just fine for you!

Hi there:  Just a quick note to say that I too was given Plaquinel to start although my Rheumatologist wanted to immediately combine the MTHX with it.  I resisted cos of the usual scary stuff re MTHX so took Plaquinel to start only and after about four months I must admit that I had some relief from the inflammation etc.  At the end of the four months I had a return visit and was counselled about the combination of the two as the best way to treat the disease.  I knew this was coming cos I had read so many postings here and read books etc so I have just started MTHX as well (about three doses).  I know that MTHX takes time to kick-in (no side-effects to speak of at present!!) but Plaquinel has helped me over the past few months.   Meds change I know over the coming years but as of now things are not too bad. I hope I haven't jinxed myself!!!

I was on Plaquenil and an anti-inflammatory alone for the first five years after being diagnosed with RA.  I always had some pain when taking Plquenil, but it really kept it pretty much in control.   The amazing thing is I had almost no joint damage until I cut down the doseage from twice a day to once a day when I went on the AP in year six. I sustained a lot of damage in the years that I only took one Plaquenil a day.  I didn't discover the damage until three years down the road as I didn't have xrays done like I should have.

Since going back on the Plaquenil at full dose (along with the AP), the damage seems to have halted.

Never had any side effects from it and I have been taking it now for eleven years.
