Where to inject? | Arthritis Information

Where do you guys usually inject your Enbrel?  I go for the inner thigh.  I think the belly is too sensitive of a site, especially for skinny people. I'm just the opposite gurudami!  When I first started on Enbrel about a year ago, I always injected in my thighs.  Each time, it really stung!!  So about four or five months ago, I got up the courage to try injecting in my stomach.  (Don't know why this seemed so strange to me!)  Anyway, it stings much less there and I'll never go back to injecting in my thighs!  I don't qualify as a skinny person though!  Also, I use the Enbrel SureClick injectors.

dordale I am thin and find that my legs don't have enough fat on them to take a Sureclick injection. I actually injected into the muscle. My stomach has a little fat, I call it my injection pad, and has worked the best for me. Also, I have switched back to the 25mg syringes as I find the needle is smaller and the injection, painless.dordale8-  What mg Enbrel do you take?  Does SureClick come in 50mg injections?

My belly and thighs actually seem to have the same amount of "landing pad" lol, but I consider my belly to be sacred so I respect it.  I also didn't like the bump of fluid that lasts for a bit after an injection.  I guess my thigh is a more natural/comfortable spot to inject, even though I do get scared that I'll pierce the femur artery.

SO, that's two for belly, and one for thigh... thanks!

sure clicks come in 50mg injectors. thats what i use.

and i go for the belly, cuz there enough padding there.

now that i think about it...theres enough padding everywhere.

I gave my first injection of Embrel this weekend in the belly and it was a snap.  No stinging, no pain.  I'm going to continue injecting it there.I just started Enbrel 6 weeks ago and I use 50 mg syringes.  I inject in my belly(plenty of fat there) and have had no trouble.  So I will continue using the bellyI also use the belly. I use the 50mg pre filled syringe and I inject really slowly. No pain and no lump of fluid. when I spent 3 months in hospital I had the blood thinning injections daily in the thighs and it was extremely painful, so it will always be the tummy for me.Gotta go for the gut. 50 mg injections going on two years in February. What did we ever do before Enbrel???

Howdy folks,

When I started  Enbrel (earlier this year) and was freaking out at the derm's office about injecting myself, my derm suggested the stomach because it wouldn't hurt as bad as the thigh. So, with my SureClick, I did it with him right there in front of me me and I think I can surely say I will never inject anywhere except my stomach.

Good luck to ya!

Sarie    i used to use the sureclick, but i couldn't stand the pain! i would use my
thigh, but oh my god it would hurt so bad! i'm usually quite tough with stuff
like this, but i found this unbearable. i use the 25mg syringe now, and i use
my inner thigh - totally painfree. it's annoying to have to mix the serum, but
it was totally worth the switch.

(oh and jillybean, i used to have the same problem ... i'd sit there for a
loooong time just waiting to press that stupid button. ah those stupid
sureclicks ... maybe try the syringe? .... unless you have a hard time with
seeing needles...)

best of luck to everyone!

My hubby has been giving me injections with sure click in the back of my upper arms and man, did it sting! I tried it on Monday in my stomach, and didn't even feel a thing! Enbrel has been helping me out so much! I hope you are all getting some relief with it too!

I've had only one injection of SureClick and I took it in my thigh - hurt like crazy! Good thing is after 2 days I feel 100% better. It's like a miracle. Swelling is way down, doesn't hurt me to walk, still some stiffness in knees and fingers but compared to where I was headed last week, it's a huge relief. But - from what I've read here and heard elsewhere, for shot #2 I will try to stomach, even though it doesn't sound great to me. I will take everyone's word and give it a try.

I've been on mtx and plaquenil for 5 years with increasing pain and swelling over the last 6 months.

I start Enbrel next week.  Injection sites...a lot to think about Hi all
I start Enbrel in 10 days

I've heard pain can be relieved by putting ice on the injection site for a few minutes both before and after the injection.

Has anyone tried it?
Bora_Bora39466.1521296296Well, happy to report I lived through giving myself my first 50mg injection...in the tummy! This was under the instruction of my Dr's nurse. It wasn't anywhere as bad as I thought it was going to be, whew!I agree  - I tried taking the SureClick in my tummy and it is 100% better. No bruising and a lot less pain. I am thrilled with Enbrel - I wish my previous doctor had put me on it 6 months ago. Now - If I could just not fall down the stairs again, I'll be painfree!! My ribs hurt and I have the most colorful bruises all up and down my left side. Nothing broken, fortunately - just a badly traumatized husband.bora , I do ice the area that I am going to inject and it really does work . I usually keep the ice on for about 2 minutes then quickly inject before you thaw out . Let me know how it works for you .  MaimiI shoot into my small fat pad east and west of my naval, that's all the fat I have. I can't use the sure clicks because they go past my fat and into my innards if I am not real careful. If you do't mind a suggestion, when you inject make sure that the very point is the very first part of the point to touch the skin and it will enter easy and without pain unless you get a dull needle.I've heard of others talking about dull enbrel needles and so far both the needles from this 4 pac are rounded and extremely hard and painful to inject and now I believe that there are dull needles.

If you have a problem  with the needle try pinching the skin hold the pinched skin then inject that might help meme  I just did my second injection last Thursday.  My Dr. told me about the burning before
choosing the 50mg versus the 25mg.   My own personal choice was to go with the once
weekly 50mg and tough out the burning.
I, like many others, went for the stomach area.  I never even felt the needle go in.  The solution does burn, but it's just momentary, while you are injecting the solution.  Once I was done, so was the burning.
I did get significant bruising the 1st time around which is actually still there, 1 1/2 weeks later.  But no bruising so far from the 2nd one.
I have tried my best to keep a positive attitude and joke about things when I can.  Some days it's easier to joke then others, obviously.
With summer coming, I just had to laugh, thinking of the weight I've gained from the Prednisone and the bruising on my belly from the injections.  Boy, I will be one hot ticket in a bikini this summer.
Here's one more vote for the belly! Since I prefer the syringes (over the pens) I feel that I can control the injection better on my belly--I can see it, I can reach it and I can inject as slowly as needed. I"ve found also that the warmer the meds, the easier and less painful.

When you inject sureclick in the belly are you standing, sitting or laying down?

Yikes I don't like the sounds of any of this....my thighs are muscular I'm afraid it will really hurt there. But can it also go into the muscle and it taht a bad thing?

wanttobeRAfree--just noticed your question...sorry this reply is so late.

I use the sureclicks in my stomach and I do it while standing up.  I used to do inject in my thighs--and boy did it sting!!  Never again!  Sometimes it does sting a little when I inject in my stomach, but no where near as bad as the thighs.

dordale I'm so glad I read this thread!  I've been taking Imitrex Injections for migraines for nearly 15 years...in my thigh, the outer thigh...those hurt and I HAVE to use the thigh for those injections.  So when my RD put me on Enbrel I naturally went for the thigh and yes, it hurts but I was like, if it works I don't care how bad they hurt.  Reading all the "tummy" posts has made me reconsider and I may try the tummy.  EXACTLY where in the tummy do y'all do it...in relation to your bellybutton?I just had my first shot in the doctors office 3 days ago.  The nurse told me to never inject in the inter thigh.  Lots of nerve endings there according to her.  Told me to alternate between outer thighs and tummyI inject on the top of my thigh but more towards my knee than my torso. Last time we did it higher up my thigh I bruised badly and it hurt like hell.I was on Enbrel, for several years and have used both the sureclick and regular needles.  Everyone is different, but I preferred the sureclick.  It was so easy.  You push the button and you're done.  I have injected in both my legs and stomach and have to say that I preferred injecting in to the stomach.  I have plenty of padding (thanks to Prednisone), but injecting in the stomach was almost painfree, for me.  I would inject a couple of inches to the left or right of my belly button.  I would then alternate, going up or down, but still staying a couple of inches away from the belly button.

To me, having a little sting for a couple of minutes was far better than dealing with all the pain, from the effects of RA.
