I hope someone can help. I have been dx with RA for 16 yrs. I have been on mtx, humeria, kineret, remicaid, imuran, arava, gold, you name it.I can't seem to get a handle on this disease. I was in a car accident a year and a half ago which triggered an onset of OA in my back as well.I am currently taking Enbrel, prednisone, mobic and vicodin with very little relief. My rheummy gave me a scrip for a Lidocain patch for my back but I might as well just put a bandaid on it. I go back to physical therapy tomorrow but don't have much hope for that either. Help!! Any ideas???

MAYBE A NEW RHEUMY AND A FRESH APPROACH IS IN STORE.  THAT'S WHERE I AM NOW.  I HAVE BEEN ON A VARIETY OF MEDS BUT THE DISEASE HAS NEVER BEEN IN CONTROL.  GOOD LUCK TO YOU.

I am so sorry Finn.  What about a referral to a pain management clinic?  It sounds like you need relief BAD and there has to be something that can be done.  Go to the pain experts.  I am not an expert but it seems rds and gps are not very sympathetic to ra pain.  I hope things get better - Roxanne

HiYa finngirl!

I just wanted to say Welcome!! & hope ya find some relief soon!

Pain management is a good step, so is a new doc for new ideas.

Have you looked into any of the newer studies?  I understand a lot of folks are getting almost miraculous relief from abatacept.

What's abatacept? Is anyone using it?

Finn; I use Lidocane patches on my leg where I have some nerve damage. I like them, but for server pain I'm not sure they would work.

Have you tried them?

I have OA in my hip area, that radiates to my spine and then my spine begins to burn ), so I think I have somewhat of an idea as to what you must be going through.   When the pain starts there, I can hang up moving for about 3 days and nothing seems to stop the pain but time.  I have been offered cortisone shots but I had them in my ankle and they didn't help all that well, so I never took them.  But it could possibly help you.

Have you thought about trying acupuncture?  I have read post in here mentioning using acupuncture and having some pretty good results.  That might be a possibility for you.

Have you any access to a hot tub, when I had a hot tub, that did help quite a bit, in fact I wish now that I didn't give it to my daughter.

I hope you find some relief and very soon.  Having RA and then having to deal with a back with OA, sure can make life feel very discouraging at times

I am praying that you have a painfree wekend.

I am sorry you have had a reaction to all the "good" meds. There is something out there that will work ya. You might need to go find another doc or even a specialist if you have not seen one in a while. There are other options, you just have to find them.

Hope you find relief soon! Humira is approved by the FDA in the US...according to this article, they are still waiting in Europe..don't think I'd be taking it if it wasn't approved.  It would be nice if we could just pop a pill and all the pain goes away...............maybe some day.

Humira

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Humira (adalimumab, previously D2E7) for the reduction in signs and symptoms and the inhibition of structural damage in adults with moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis who have failed one or more DMARDs. Humira is a human monoclonal antibody that specifically blocks tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a). (read more about TNF inhibitors)

Approval of Humira from the European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products (EAEM) is currently under review.
