OT - Asthma sufferers | Arthritis Information

Alright I'm probably insane here, but I'm really curious. You know how in walmart you can buy OTC inhalers for "asthma"? Well, do they really work? I mean, what kind of medicine is it, and why/how can they sell it OTC? What would the common person use it for? Or is it even any use to ANYONE.

The reason that I ask is I keep toying with the idea that I have mild asthma. From the symptoms I have, Lizzie and Crunchy both keep telling me that SOMETHING isn't right. I'm just wondering if something like that would do me any good, or if it's just a waste of money.
I would ask your doctor I have asthma nd I would not dream of using those. I heard sometimes they can cause more problems then good. maybe you need to see a pulminologistI've thought about it, but I dunno. It's not something that gets in the way, it's more irritating than anything. I mean, I've lived with it this long. I guess I was just wondering if something that easy would help me now and again. If not, it's really not a huge deal. Katie, do not try these OTC meds. They could get you into some pretty
serious health issues. The more of them you take, the more you seem to
need and can actually cause you more asthma problems. My x husband
learned the hard way and finally after many years of doctoring, got
straightened out. There are some really good RX meds for asthma. Please
see your doctor if you are having trouble.Alrighty then! Thanks Lori. That's what I was lookin for! :) I really don't want another med. I will mention it to my doc next time I'm in, but I will also add that I don't want another medication LOL We'll see. I'm mostly tired of not being able to lay back and talk like a normal person. If I prop myself in the bed and talk to Justin, I end up in a deep, lung-ey coughing fit. It's just not natural!

I use to have asthma. I had it from age 12-18. Which was also about the time I was in teenage remission. Kinda think it was not asthma now and that RA might have been attacking my lungs instead, because the asthma inhaler never really seems to work well for me.

I also went thru a period of anxiety attacks where I felt like I could not breath and I would have to go to the ER for a breathing treatment. I done that for about a year.

I did not have asthma symptoms after having my daughter, but that is also when my J/RA became more active.

I hated taking that stupid asthma inhaler! It tasted like damn rubber and left a bad taste in my mouth. The only cool thing about the inhaler was I could spray my skin with it and it would be cold. Or I could spary it into my while it was closed and then open it and it would look like my hand was smoking i have asthma pretty severly, not to the point that I need nebulizer treatmenrs-just a few when i was a toddler, but I carry an inhaler with my always and take singular daily so that i dont need my inhaler as often. when it gets bad i take a steroid inhaler for a few weeks. I need to take my inhaler before anything physical. Anyway it shouldnt be so hard to find out if it is asthma or not, cant the reg doctor do that? I have a pulmonogolist and allergist but for the most part its my pediatrician who prescribes stuff and changes those meds around. shouldnt be too hard to deal with if it is asthma and boy do those meds make a difference!Yea Katie those meds are badddd news.  The only time I have ever used them was when I was somewhere and I forgot my inhaler and I didnt have a choice.  You should go see your dr and they'll be able to give you an albuteral inhaler and prolly a preventive inhaler.  But I wouldnt waste your money on the OTC onesMy asthma is so severe that it is what caused me to be like I am today. major asthma attack , airlifted to hospital not breathing, put in induced coma, attempted to resusitate 3 times. muscle wastage, PTSD and then PA. now I make sure I look after my lungs.next time I might not be so lucky!!! I have not smoked since that day 4 years ago.I use a preventer puffer every day, singulair tablet and a reliever puffer when needed. I might be in pain everyday but at least I can breathe. Here in south australia puffers are not sold OTC . you need a doctors prescription. But i think in other parts of Australia you can. they are ventolin inhalers. That was a good decision allycat. I had a reaction to anesthesia last week
and gasped for breath for 2 hours, longest 2 hours of my entire life. I have
taken care of so many chronic lung patients, I totally feel for them. Katie, if
this is something new for you, it is a good idea to get it checked out as
something else could be going on. You don't need another problem.
