You guys were so helpful while I was trying to decide on a breed I wanted to introduce you guys to Miss Lilly. She's only 5 weeks old so she'll be at the breeders for several more weeks....but she's ours. She's a Chocolate brown Toy poodle. We're so excited!

I think I'll actually name her Lillian Rose for her registration papers....but we'll just call her Lilly.

Oh she is too cute!!!  I am so happy for you!!! I have four dogs and they really are so good mentally and emotionally for you.

Congratulations on the new baby!!!

Connie

awwww how sweet is she!!! Thanks for sharing her with us Lovie!!!

awww Lovie she is adorable! You are going to have so much fun with her.

BTW how did you talk hubby into a poodle?

We're all so excited. It feels like we're expecting a new baby.

Congratulations on your new little girl! She is just adorable. And she'll be small enough to sit on your lap, and not pull too hard on a leash, and carry in a doggie front pack.....ok, I'm getting carried away... but seriously, I'm so jealous!!Where are her eyes!??!?!? LOL She's so cute!!!!!!

Miles~Trust me.....I know exactly what you mean

Katie; her eyes are in there and believe it or not their open!

LOL She's just one big ball of messy curly fur! There are no eyes, don't lie!  You've GOT to get her a little doggie purse, she'd be SO CUTE in it!

Definately have to have a doggie purse!

I can't wait!

Oh she is so cute. I love her name too, you are going to have lots of fun with her. We have a small dog too  she was an 18th birthdy pressie for my daughter) and my hubby always said NEVER.........Hahaha, she is his sidekick now and he dotes on her. The doggie purse is a great idea

And I bet Mr. Lovie will be all over her too! I have seen too many NON Poodle men get way sold on THEIR particular poodle (which is of course somehow different than every other poodle out there...heeheehee!!!) And you know how puppies just worm their way into the hearts of everyone anyway!

Please share more pics too as she grows. It will be nice to experience virtually and vicariously (w/o even having to risk hurt my doggies feelings heeheehee...)

Congrats!

Awww, what a little sweetie!! My mom has a boxer named Lily!

OH Lovie, Lilly is so cute!!

She looks like a ball of tangled up hair

Hope she brings you much love and entertainment.

Oh my gosh she is so cute! you are gonna have a whale of a time with all her antics.. How many more weeks til she is yours? some states are six weeks, some are eight. Here in WA it is eight. What a cutie!!!  I have two little dogs myself, a pure breed shih tzu and what I call a sh*t poo!!!  That's a half shih tzu and half miniature poodle!!!  You can tell Mr. Lovie that because they are so little that they get cold easily, which is true, and Lilly is going to need some sweaters for the cold winter!!!  I got a really cute doggie purse at Target actually!

micheleb is right about the sweater. Little toy dogs usually can't handle the cold well. I have 3 toy dogs, A Cavalier King Charles spaniel, a long haired Chihuahua and a Pomeranian, so I have TONS of sweaters. I just can't resist when I see a cute doggy sweater, LOL..... They have VERY cute little doggy stuff on Ebay.

Well the breeder just started her on what looked like baby ceral this week. She said she's took to it right away but she didn't want to promise me a date until she was certain that she's eating well and can manage without her Mother. I can respect that and want what's best for Lilly. I'm a little afraid of her being so small right now to be honest. I think between 8 to 10 weeks she should have grown a great deal and be ready to leave her home and join ours.

Yes; I've been checking out all kinds of doggie goodies on the internet.

Did you guys train your little ones to go on one of these piddle pads (I think that's what they are called) when they were very young and you weren't home? It's my intention to crate train her but I'm thinking at first when I first get her home I need to leave her in our laundry room when I'm away. I can come home to check on her at lunch time but I won't be able to make it home every hour that's for sure. They say the little ones can only hold it for about an hour per month of age. Has this been your experience? I'm a little nervous about the housetraining thing.

Oh Lovie, she's adorable. Yeup, piddle pads are great. And crate training is the way to go. Even at nite. Especially when they are small, they like the enclosed enviroment to feel safe. Talk to your vet about it. Oh, I'm so happy for you.

Thanks for the advice Monk. I've got so much to learn about being a puppy parent.

Course I didn't know much about being a Mother at 18 when my son was born.....but we've done ok. I'm still amazed we've come as far as we have

Zoe and Joy are such fun and I don't know what I would do without them.

In 13 years, we had forgotten how much work a puppy would be.  They are totally worth it and I adore the company, but be sure that you have the time and supplies for potty training.   Oh- and they will chew anything!  Baby proof the house!  Your baby is smaller than mine and you only have one, so you should not have much work.

A few tips-  The puppy pads work great.   You can find them everywhere.  Just get the cheapest.  If you want to save money on the pads, you can put newspaper over them and go thru less of them. They are not cheap!

For clean ups- Swiffer type mops work the best on hard surfaces.  Much better than a regular mop, since you just throw out the urine stained pad out. You can get boxes of plain Swiffer refills at Sam's Club inexpensively and they fit Clorox mop, too.  You can also use the blue rolls of shop towels as refills.

Have fun!  I would be glad to answer questions, since I am going through puppy training a few months ahead of you.

Lynne

YICKS! Two at a time? You're braver than I am that's for sure. I was hesitant to get one at all considering I work all day long; but millions of people have dogs and work full time. I figured we won't be the first family to learn to manage it, right?

What a cutie-pie!! Every time one of you gets a new little buddy, or posts pics of your doggies, it makes me want another puppy.

Lynne, I'm a cocker person, too. My sweet little Sashi died about 12 years ago (has it really been that long?) and I couldn't bear replacing her at first. Now that I've become so crippled, I don't think I could take care of a puppy the way I would want to.

But I'm here by myself a lot during the day and it would be nice to have a little companion again. (give me a few minutes, and I'll talk myself into it

Lovie, thanks so much for sharing your baby! She is precious! I bet she has Mr. Lovie wrapped around her little paw in no time!

I hope you're right about Mr. Lovie Nini.....I think you will be.

You know you could get you a little lap dog like Lilly. They say poodles are pretty high energy but you can exercise small dogs like these in the house with games and activities that exercise their minds as well as their bodies. They say a poodle is just as happy laying in your lap as they are chasing a ball. Something like that might be good for you. She's so tiny she won't be hard to lift. That's one of the main reasons I choose a toy poodle. Many factors actually went into the final choice; but the restrictions on my future certainly played into the decision.

I just hope I don't trip over her constantly. I think that's one of my biggest worries about her size.

Your right Lovie, usually puppys can only hold it an hour per month of age..If you use the crate to house train Lilly, you might want to pick a crate that will fit her when she is fully grown. And now while she's little, you can make it smaller with a box or such. All she needs while you train her is to stand up, turn around and lay down. She won't potty where she sleeps. Its how I house trained mine. It helps her get the idea. My Vet told me that when crate training sometimes a schedule will help..... I can't help with the piddle pads. I've never used them. I think that the pet stores did sell a spray that is supposed to help your puppy get the idea about using the piddle pad as a potty.

If I was home all day I wouldn't even consider using them but when I have to work all day I'm thinking that at least until she gets a little older I might need to do this for a little while. From all I'm reading you don't want to get a crate that is big enough for them to sleep in half and potty in the other half. Once they mess in their crate it kind of messes up the whole process. So I'm thinking I need to wait until she's at least 3 months old before I start using the crate while I'm away. I will have it from day one and use it for short times so she can start to get use to it.

Am I way off base on this method of training? If I start her off staying in the laundry room while I'm at work and then two months later leave her in her crate while I'm gone is she going to resent that?

I'm a little confused on what to do at first especially.

Just a word of warning....my dog (golden retriever) stayed in the laundry room when he was a pup.  Till he ate it.  My husband had to put in a new wall.

Definately good to know.

I've read that poodles don't chew as much as some breeds.....especailly larger breeds. I'm hoping that's the case. I've had large dogs in the past and that drove me crazy!

Lovie39337.5848842593I've heard small dogs are easier to housebreak too.

Lovie-

Your past experience will really help you.  2 puppies were a challenge, but I never would have tried it at my age (61) if I hadn't had dogs before.  It made it easier.

I was working from home when I got the puppies, but have quit (retired, I guess) since then because I have had 4 surgeries in a year and a half and just could not keep up.  There is no doubt that you can raise a puppy and go to work.   Millions do it!

Nini-  Without my puppies and my laptop, I would be going crazy now. I cannot leave the house without my husband's help since I am recovering from foot surgery and can't drive.  Yes, I am talking to them.  They are rascals, but when they cuddle up next to me, I forget able the times that they dumped the trash over.

If I could get to my other computer I would post photos of them.

Lynne

I LOVE puppy piddle pads!!! Harley will use his any times he wants but by the time I had gotten Oliver, he was about 8 weeks old and had already been to two homes and for some reason I could not get him to use the pads.  I think he was beat and abused before we got him but he is a wonderful little dog!!

The pads are great for when its raining old really cold you are hurt too much to take them out!  I take my boys to work so never needed a create.  Don't even own one!  They have always slept with me and gone ever where with me!
When you pick a crate for Lilly, you can get her one that she can use when she's full grown. Just section the crate off with a box. We used a lid from an old plastic storage box. We cut it down to fit inside the crate, rounded off the corners, drilled holes and used zip ties to attatch it to the crate on all four corners, so the puppy couldn't knock it down. Worked okay for us. Now my dogs use their crates for naps durning the day. Its like their personal bedrooms.

Shoot, sorry Lovie. My brains aren't working today... You can get a crate that comes with a divider so you can make the crate smaller. Midwest and Lifestages crates sell the crates with dividers.

Hey Lovie,

I used the pee pads with my mine for the first couple of weeks mixed in with taking her out of course. I took the pads out with us outside when I took her out there at first too and that seemed to help her with the transition and with never going anywhere in the house except a pad if I couldn't get her outside enough. Mine (small also) really did need about every 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours for awhile. Someone had told me that the most important thing in the training was to NOT EVER get to experience "going" on a substrate that you would not want them to go on later. Hence why it could be helpful to use a pad so that they at least never ever get to go on your flooring or carpet. And my dog actually never has I have to say so there might be something to it. Somewhere on the internet I had also seen these  grass/sod filled litter boxes (instead of pee pad) for dogs so that if they have to go while still in house they will be learning going on grass from beginning. I thought it was super cool but was out of my price range at the time.

Good Luck!

 Lovie,

Well as you can see we all love our fur babies

Our vet told me to paper train her because it was February and cold out. Being tiny and a toy does have more health issues than a standard size. My Poochie is 10 months now and healthy as can be.

My baby hated a crate and cried real tears when we left her in it. Not sure why but I never used it again. If your laundry room is where you want to put her while you work I think that is a great idea. Just be sure everythings out if her reach that she can chew or choke on. Make sure she has plenty of chew toys, a bed, and maybe a blanket with your smell on it. She's going to cry when you first leave her and at night too if you don't plan on sleeping with her. We do

I have a pink puppy purse and she hates it. It was almost like a diaper bag and very handy but she nixed that idea

You will need baby shampoo to wash her face and then regular puppy shampoo for all over, a doggie brush, a doggie tooth brush and paste, and I use one of those brushes that fits over your finger and has a tooth brush on it.Poochie prefers that.. Keep a close eye on her toe nails they grow very fast.

I would get a baby gate and leave the door open so she doesn't feel so hemmed in. When your home she can see you walk by and won't be too lonely.

It depends on your vet what kind of dog food he prefers. Mine is Science Diet, or whatever she is eating when you get her may be fine..

Our vet recommended that we didn't breed our dog, even to another toy, because one gene from way back could make her have big puppies and she could die. She recommended we have her fixed by 6 mos. old and we did. Who wants to deal with a puppy in heat every few months. Not me

As far as training her to her papers, poodles are very smart and it won't be long until she is consistent. Accidents are going to happen so just keep your eyes on her and every time she squats run her to her paper and tell her peepee on your paper, good girl! When she first wakes up and right after she eats is the best time to set them on the paper. I fed my baby 3 times a day for a few months and now twice a day, with treats and a chewey Kong in between.

Well I've written you a novel here and I'm sure there better ways than these to raise your puppy. This is what my vet suggested and so far it has all worked for us

Lovie, she is just incredibly gorgeous. My Neve would love one just like that. And Lillian Rose called Lily is the most perfect name for her. That's definitely who she is. I hope your family get many years of joy and love out of that small bundle as I am sure Lily will.

Thank you so much guys. You are all being so helpful! I joined one of these poodle forums but it's not very active and you guys have already given me more pointers than I've gotten there so far. Their really nice....but it's way too slow there for my taste.

Mo~I have already purchased two books on Toy Poodles and finished them both cover to cover. Funny how fast a book moves when the subject is of interest to you isn't it? What kind of dog do you have? You probable mentioned it.....but I haven't looked back.

I'm going to call the Breeder and check on her later today. I feel kind of silly doing that.....but I can't stand it! I need to see how she's doing.

Is the correct spelling of Lilly with one L or two? I've seen it spelled both ways. I want to make sure I get it spelled correctly when I send off her registration papers. I guess just like with people names it all depends on what you want to do right? I figured since it's short for Lillian so I'd use two L's but I don't want to do that if it's not the correct way.

Lovie39338.2562615741Lovie, you can spell it either way like you thought. I would go the double ll to go with Lillian Rose, how sweet.

Do we get to see puppy growing up pics?  Definatley! I'll likely just keep adding to this thread and maybe change the subject line occationally so I don't swamp this board with my new puppy pictures. Oh, cool, that will be fun to see the growing of Miss Lillian Rose.

Lovie, I have a toy pom/poo but she got all pomeranian gene

I can tell how excited you are

I've had two registered dogs before and honestly the papers mean absolutely nothing to me.

Yeah I hear ya on that one! I will send her papers off sometime but like you I'm not really interested. I'll never sell her or breed her but I do have a small fortune invested in her

Lynne

This is so exciting for you!!!  I don't think its silly at all to call and check on her!!  If she is close by, maybe ask if there is a good time to go visit her and take a towel or old t shirt with your smell on it and leave it there for her!!!

I love my two little boys more than anything!  Since I can not have children, they literally are my babies!!  Harley came with papers and we registered him but Oliver was rescued.  Papers don't mean a thing unless you are going to breed, sell or show them!

A list of things you will need was already given but i wanted to add a good conditioning spray, I like NovaPearls and this new one I just bought is buy Hansen's its called Labor Saver sea kelp moisture mist.  It smells wonderful and really helps get the tangles out.   Harley has really long hair and its best to spray the hair with something before giving them a full brush.  Be sure to get Lilly used to brushing and grooming very early even is she may not really need it.  I also believe that rawhide is VERY BAD, especially for little guys, go instead with a nylabone or natural tendon type bones.  Buy a bottle of carpet cleaner before she comes home, an accident will eventually happen!  I love the Zukes small training treats, I always have some in my pocket!

Here is how I did it with my toy rat terrier. I had a crate I kept next to my bed so he could see me. In my bathroom I had puppy pads put down and the doorway blocked with a baby gate. For the first few days, you are supposed to keep them in the kennel for a good bit of time (they wont pee where they sleep) so play hard with her, put her on her puppy pad and tell her to go potty. If she does, praise all over the place and play a bit more. Then put her in her kennel. After an hour or so, if she starts whining, pick her up without saying anything to her and put her on puppy pad and tell her to go potty, and if she does something there, praise like crazy and let her run around and play. If it's a false alarm, put her back in the kennel. Mine slept in his kennel at night and if he started to whine, I would put him on his puppy pad, and only give him praise and attention if he went. It;ll be tough the first few nights, but they catch on. All three of my dogs are crate trained and puppy pad trained. I only use puppy pads if it is storming outside or we will be gone for a long period of time. Believe it or not, they come to love their kennel. We don't even have the doors on them anymore. The plus side to all this is most hotels will let you bring them if they are kennel trained. Also, all my dogs pee on command. Hubby thinks its funny, because even if the littlest dog doesn't have to go, he eeks out a drop for me. Your vet will have step by step instructions, which is what I followed to a T.

wow, everyone has given you great tips!

Sounds like I'm in for a few restless nights, huh?

Yes; everyone is being so helpful. Thank you so much!
