Dear All,

I am currently on Remicade every 10 weeks 500 ml. I had stopped mtx because I am planning on to have a baby...the result is I am going through a very bad flare as of now and my dr said to have Cortisone shots.... I wanted to know how bad is the shot taking is and does it work? Any thing I need to know before I decide...I have my Dr. Appt today, so ASAP reply will be appriciated

Thanks,

Alpa

Alpa, welcome to the forum!

I know many people who have take cortisone shots and it has worked wonders for them.  For me, I had one shot in my shoulder a couple of years ago and unfortunately, it didn't help at all.  The discomfort of the shot was mostly temporary, so I wouldn't let that stop you if you're in pain.

Hopefully some others here with good experiences will answer soon.

Yes  they  are    very  good

Apparently  i  am  having  one  on  monday   in my  knee   for  relief  as  i  am   going on  MTX   on the  15 th  october  it  should  tide  me  over  hopefully

The  dr.  can  spray   some  numbing  stuff   on the   area  where  the  injection  goes  so it  wont  feel  so    bad

I  mostly  get  relief   from  the   injection

Good   luck

Ask them to spray the freezy stuff and not be stingy about it, lol. That's always what I tell my rheumy before he does my injections and he always laughs, but he does it!

Welcome!

   Alpa,

I have had too many cortisone shots over the years to count!

As far as side affects go I never had any, Don't be afraid and have one, if you don't like it you don't have to have more. Good Luck

Like Mo I've had more than I can count and have appreciated each and every one of them!

I won't kidchya; they hurt going in.....but not that bad. Totally worth the short lived pain for the long term relief.

The effects do wear off with time; but it's certainly good for a while.

Good Luck!

Yes, please come right over and bring me one!

I have developed bursitis in my one hip, and--man--does it smart! Of course, it wasn't that bad when I had my first RD appointment last week, so when I mentioned the pain, the doc said, "Well, is it bad enough that you want to do anything about it?"  Like a fool, I said no... two days later, I was kicking myself!

Glad to hear all the positive experiences with the shot... and good luck to you ADShah! I didn't read all of the responses, but I hope you've been to the doctor, gotten your shot, and are feeling better now.

I had my first cortizone shot in my foot a couple weeks ago and YES it was so worth it!!!!  It hurt like heck but within 24 hours I was walking.  I have no idea if it will last for long but I think it was worth it!

Connie

They hurt but only for a minute or two and are worth it.  I've had my back shot up, hips, knees, and my shoulder.

Christina, I've had bursitis in both hips and had steroid injections that worked great.  In fact the shots worked better in the hips than anywhere else on my body.  Don't suffer, call your RD and get a shot.  Bursitis is really painful and stays around for a long time.  Lindy

Dear All,

Thanks for your support... I had two shots yesterday but not in any of my joints but in my buxx... It was a pinch and that's it... Boy! I was so scared... the nurse told me that she will give me a candy and a sticker if I become a brave girl

It started working in few hours...I am no longer tired and joint pain is gone... I hope it will be like this for some time now...

Alpa

Congratulations! Okay, I need to call about my hip. This is exciting.

Alpa, do tell... WHAT STICKER DID YOU CHOOSE?!

Thanks in advance!

Hope you're continuing to have great relief from your cortisone shots, Alpa!

Echoing what others have said here, don't know what I would have done these past years without them.  Have had so many I can't remember.  They have saved me from insanity with pain and immobility.  Never had one which didn't work.  Only ever had one which did hurt me and it was worth it as my knee was like a balloon.  For me they work within the hour.  Such relief.  Worst bit after a joint shot is staying totally still, immobilising it for 24 hours (bathroom visits excepted!!).

I was told when I first had a hydrocortisone injection by a young consultant that some people say it makes them feel "euphoric".  Quite elated they feel so much better so quickly.  the only thing I feel is a little flushed on the cheeks (face cheeks! - sorry!), as though it's slightly raised my temperature.

Gilly - hope your shot next week brings you great relief.  Good luck.  (I had one in my knee last week and it gave instant relief and results.  I can now bend it pain free and get upstairs easily)

Man, I've had a totally different experience than all of you! I've only had one cortisone shot, in my elbow, and it hurt like HELL! I almost cried, and it takes alot of pain to make me cry, and the Dr. moved the needle all around, and it didn't do any good at all.  I had it done at the P/T place. When my rhuemy asked me if I wanted one I practically yelled NO! Then he explained that they do it very gently and slowly and that it wouldn't be like before. But I'm still too scared to try.

They don't tend to want to do more than two joint shots at the same time.  For me, they have in the past chosen the two most troublesome out of three of four joints (as you said) and done them first, then had me back three weeks later to do the next.  I also suppose it depends on how much of the shot they are putting in?  What has anyone else epxerienced with frequency of shots, etc.?

Also, at my hospital they won't inject the same joint more than three to four times a year.

As I have had quite a few shots over the years, I had a scan for bone density,  a couple of years back which was OK.

Good luck

Miles - sounds very ouch!  Poor you.  Sounds too, like the experience with my balloon knee a few years back but they didn't move the needle around.  Think I would have gone through the roof.  I remember that the consultant said with my knee there was so much fluid and inflammation in and surrounding the joint, that the liquid of the shot had "nowhere to go" once it was injected, if that makes sense.  The knee was already full enough of fluid.  However, as it worked wonders it was worth it.

Please don't be put off because chances are it will never hurt like that again.  Especially if they know you had a bad experience they will, I am sure, treat you with extra TLC (tenderlove and care!).  Just think of the relief it will give you and why not look forward to a treat you could plan?  I always do that.  Buy a little something for myself as soon as I am next shopping!

Hi, extremely fun that you are going to have a baby. We need more babies on this forum!!

Oh, cortisone sounds like the answer to my 'foot' problem, but my doc said, "it would not help me as that is ONLY for osteo? Hummm. I'm going to tell him about all the people who think they help them!! on here? You all have RA, right?? Lynda

Hi Gilly

how did you get on with the hydrocortisone shot to your knee?  Hope it did the trick?  Mine is still going well (since three weeks ago). Hope your has brought great relief.

Joolie
