Total hip replacement ? | Arthritis Information

I've been very quiet for some time now. Today marks a year since I had my total knee done. It's been a very slow recovery and now my hip is giving me trouble. The hip is bad and it's on the same side as my knee replacement. The hip pain will cause my knee to become painful too.

The ortho doc took a x-ray of my hip and he wasn't happy with what he saw. I'm bone on bone and the pins that are in my hip, have moved! I need a total hip and it won't be easy.

The doc isn't thrill to do it, as he will have to dig out the pins first, before doing the replacement. For the next 3 months, I'm on pain management. Ultram during the day and Vicodin at night. I'm to use my quad cane or walker at all times. I'm getting a disable parking card too.

One last thing, I'm so down about this. I'm tired of being in pain. I'm tired of not being able to stand for more then 20 mins and forget about taking my long walks.

I hate arthritis!

Hugs Marisa.

I hate arthritis too.

You have every reason to hate arthritis. I do too. So don't feel bad about your feelings. They are perfectly normal.

Kathy

Hi Marisa, I'm so sorry about your hip.  I know you've just recovered from the TKR but hips are an easier surgery and an easier recovery.  They're also a quicker recovery than a TKR.  Even if he has to dig around for the pins that shouldn't be a problem with recovery.  Girl, just think how good you'll get around once the hip is done.  They'll be no stopping you.

I know that the thought of another surgery is overwhelming, but think about your future.  You're still young and have years to run around on those new knees and hips.  I'm facing the other knee replace. next year and just the thought right now is a little overwhelming.  If we didn't have some travel plans I'd turn right around and have it done now, but there are a few things I want to do first.  Just go for it.  You know the routine now and it will be easier for you.  Lindy

Oh by the way, I HATE ARTHRITIS!!

Oh, I'm so sorry you're going through this! I can't imagine the pain you're in. My left hip is bad, but Dr said it's bursitis- not my RA.

Can I ask how old you are? (just tell me to hush if I'm being too nosey)

My grandmother had both hips replaced back in the 70's (not at the same time!).  She recovered quickly and regretted that she hadn't done it sooner.  I have a colleague at work who recently had a hip replacement.  He says the same thing - he wishes he would have had it done sooner.  He's a big guy (probably 6 feet tall and about 400 pounds) so his recovery was not as quick as my tiny little grandmother (five feet tall and maybe 140 at the time) but he has no regrets.  He had trouble convincing the surgeons to do the surgery because he was so high-risk (obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart issues).  He had a few difficult months of physical therapy afterwards but would do it again in a heartbeat. Two of the ladies I work with have had total hip replacements in the last year.  One had a total knee replacement as well (opposite leg though).  Both ladies recovered very quickly from their hip replacements and are extremely happy with them.  The one who had a TKR as well said that the hip was a much easier recovery than the knee.

Best of luck to you!

dordale Marisa, you have a tendency to disappear and I have to hunt you down............keep us posted on your decision.  Will be thinking about you.  Lindy

hi Marisa, my tennis partner had a hip replacement due to arthritis, can you believe she came back and played first place on the ladies tennis team and we won county wide! It took a while to recover, but she was 'good as new'. I'm sorry you must go through this. WE all hate arthritis with you. The dang stuff.

I'm sorry you are hurting, Lynda

I wrote a long post to you a little while ago, and just as I finished, we lost our power, and of course my post disappeared as well.

I wanted to say I'm so sorry about your hip problems. I know it is depressing when one thing happens, after another. Just as you think you might be fixed up for a while, another joint bites the dust.

It is a nasty disease, for sure. I hope they can get your hip fixed very soon. Please let us know how things are going for you.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hugs, Nini

Hi Marisa,

I think we all have this feeling re: arthritis from time to time.  It sucks!  I had both my hips replaced and I have to say that the hips hurt a lot less than the knee replacements.  I was very young when they did all 4 joints (12 yrs old) so don't remember much except the knee replacements hurt like the dickens.  I felt much better after the hips and even grew a bit, which docs said wouldn't happen.  Good luck, honey!

Marisa:  I agree arthritis sucks!!!  I've been thru total hips at the same time.. total knees at the same time and revisions on both.

You can do it girl..it's a fight no doubt about that but in the long run you will be better off.  If you need any advice please feel free to contact me.

Sorry to hear this is happening to you especially right now Marisa. Hang in there.....you can do it. Don't give up.

Thanks.   It's been a bad day for me. I'm having PC trouble and my brain fog isn't helping.

I'll keep you posted on what's happening. Talked to this lady at the bank and she told me that the recovery from a hip replacement is easier. I hope so.

Now about the surgery, the doc said something about cutting off the head of the femur and then go digging for the pins. There's three of them and the one has moved out of the joint and has grown across the bone. That's going to be the hard one. It also explains why I have all of the pain when I lay on my right side.

Now to answer some questions.  In Jan., I'll turn 60. These pins were placed in me when I was 10 yrs. old. Have always had my sore joint days but this doesn't stop. I'm short, only 5ft. 2inches and close to 200 lbs. Gain back some weight that I had lost after I stopped working. Got on the scales a few mins ago and I've drop 3lbs.

One last thing, as I read the posts, the tears flowed. The support just made my heart and eyes overflow.

Again Thanks,

Good Luck Marisa!

Hope everything goes just as the dr expects or even better for ya!

My court date is Oct. 18th. Hopefully, this matter will be resolved on that date.
