I'm not sure that our hyperactive immune systems keep infections in check because I had more infections and incidents prior to starting dmards and biologics.  I haven't had a cold, flu or basically any opportunistic illness in several years.  Prior to the meds, just a cold would end up becoming pneumonia.  I had constant sinus infections prior to the RA meds and I haven't had a sinus infection in several years.  Not sure what the answer is.  I can only tell you my experiences.   Lindy

LinB39342.7790393519Lori, good you've got an appt.  I ended up thinking about you most of the evening.  I just had a flap graft on my nose and have been worried about infect.  Looks ok so far.  I had it done in the hospital.  I fought the plastic surgeon to have surgery in his office instead but because of the RA meds, complications, etc. he didn't want to do it in his office. Some of the specialties freak out when they see your list of drugs and diseases.  I actually consider myself pretty healthy but they sure don't.  He also said that it was extremely painful to have local inj. in the nose so I ended up with some Versed and who knows what else at hospital outpt. I was really afraid of post op infec.  It's a real concern nowdays. Let me know how your doing later today.  Lindy   They announced Friday there is case of MRSA at my daughter's school. Isn't that great? They are warning to look for pimple-like bumps. High schools have been having problems for awhile in locker rooms and on weight equipment, but this is now down to elementary. Scary.

Lori, I hope everything turns out okay.

Lorster I know you are a nurse, but if you think you have an infection, get it treated today.

I know you would tell me the same thing if our positions were reversed.

I developed mrsa in my left hip and knee after getting a total hip.  Long, long recovery with iv antibiotics, but I'm still here, but I can never have biologics because of having had septic joints.

Kathy

The school sent some info home.  "MRSA is spread almost always by direct physical contact - not through the air.  It usually starts as a pimple or boil on the skin.  MRSA can be treated successfully with proper skin care and antibiotics."

They also included some tips: "Wash hands frequently with soap and water"; okay.  "Report rashes, open sores, pimples, and boils to the school nurse or your physician "; hmm, they might as well leave the back door unlocked for us.  "Avoid body contact with others or with shared equipment if rash is present"; I guess I keep my daughter home next time she has Notpsoriasis.  "All skin sores should be covered with an adhesive bandage and clothing"; she came home with a scraped knee and ankle today, unbandaged!!!  Did they even wash it off???  "Students with MRSA should not participate in contact sports until released by a doctor"; um, but they can go to school???

there are reports of new cases in our school system here daily.

Lori or whomever, I know this is going to sound wacky but what exactly is MRSA? Is it worse than Staph or that flesh eating strep stuff?

Thanks for the info, I had no idea it was that dangerous! And resistant! Thats bad stuffThe school that I teach out sent a letter home last Wed. about a MRSA
infection among the football players. It had been caught early. The kdis
were all receiving treatment and could be in school as long as the
infected area was covered. They did cancel the game that week.

I teach a whole unit on this when I go over bacteria. Kids have no idea of
the dangers of not finishing their antibiotics. That is what has caused
this "superbug" of infections. The bacteria become immune and spread
to others. The more unfinished courses of antibiotics they are exposed
too, the stronger they get. Now we have MRSA and others are going to
folllow.
