This poor guy is really flaring!
New London A local branch of the federal IRS was closed Monday afternoon after police said a man walked into the office and shot a flare gun into his own face.
The man, whom police did not identify, was taken by ambulance to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital. Police Capt. William Dittman said he believed the man would survive.
Dittman said he didn't yet know whether any charges would be filed in the incident, which happened a little after 1:30 p.m.
As of mid-afternoon Monday, Dittman said he did not know whether the man had made any threats or said anything when he walked into the office, located on the second floor of Building Two in Shaw's Cove, but he did say the man intended to take his own life.
Dittman said there was no threat to the public.
One floor below the IRS office, Karrie Bulger, a case manager in Electric Boat's career transition center, heard something loud. Bulger said she turned to her assistant, Anita Zackowski, and asked whether she heard it. Zackowski said she had.
I said, 'Did it sound like a gunshot to you?' Bulger said.
Zackowski wasn't sure.
It was very strange. It was just very loud, Zackowski said, talking while standing next to Bulger in the lobby of the building about 45 minutes after the incident.
Bulger said she kept an eye on the window after hearing the shot. The pair said it was quiet after the shot was fired. They didn't hear screaming or any commotion.
Less than 10 minutes later, the emergency responders arrived, they said.
IRS spokeswoman Dianne Besunder said the department is assessing the situation and was waiting to hear more information.
She said the IRS office which provides taxpayer assistance, federal tax-return preparation services, cash payments, forms and legal assistance will remain closed today.
