Pred on an empty stomach | Arthritis Information

Hi all,
I am going to be fasting for 25 hours starting tomight at about 5:30. I
usually take 5 mg pred after dinner and 15 with breakfast in the morning. I
know I can't skip the pred, but if a drug can upset our stomach it will mine!

I am worried about how I will feel - does anyone take the pred on an empty
stomach? Does it bother you? It will mean tonight and tomorrow morning
with no food before the pred... maybe I am looking for some reassurance?
Or need to know know to be prepared for the worst?
pgrHi pgr,
I take pred in the morning on an empty stomach, and have had no problems,
started in March. But that is after a 12 hour fast, so I am not sure if that
would also be true after 25 hours. Hope all goes well for you.

Take care, good luck! LibethThank you libeth! Since the morning dose will be after about 14 hours that
makes me feel better!

hello pgr,

I often take my morning dose with my first cup of tea (some milk in the tea) and haven't had a problem.  Suggest you take yours with a big glass of water if that's allowed.  That way you don't have those little pills just basking there on the stomach lining.  They have to swim around as they dissolve, and I would think that dilutes any adverse effects.

Thank you Bob, Shouldn't have the water, but may make the exception for
the reasons you said.

Hello pgr!

When I started taking pred (20 mg) in June 2005, I was told to take Omeprazole to avoid getting ulcer. After having reduced the dose a year ago, I donīt take it any more and donīt have any stomache problems.  I copy from the Wikipedia web dictionary: Omeprazole (INN) (IPA: [oʊˈmɛprəzoʊl]) is a proton pump inhibitor used in the treatment of dyspepsia, peptic ulcer disease (PUD), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD/GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It was first marketed by AstraZeneca as the magnesium salt omeprazole magnesium under the trade names Losec and Prilosec, and is now also available from generic manufacturers under various trade names. Omeprazole is one of the most widely prescribed drugs internationally and is available over the counter in some countries.

As for prednisone, I have read that you should not take it on an empty stomache - take ― glass of water.
