I feel like such an idiot, but I find myself worrying about WEIGHT GAIN with Meds!! You would think I'd be worried about having a bad reaction or the meds not working, but NO.....
I have lost about 15 pounds since May, and now I'm afraid I'm going to gain it back instead of loosing another 30 pounds like I should.
My Mother passed away in February, and I REALLY took it hard (I actually think that's what brought on my RA), but I decided then that I would get healthy and take better care of myself so that I will be around for my Grandchildren....my Son is 9 & Daughter is 3, and they miss there Nana very much. Anyway, now this happens and proves that sometimes life is out of your control. BUT, still through it all....I DON'T WANT TO GAIN ANY WEIGHT BACK!! I want to LOOSE more! I read about the pain you guys are in and I think there must be something wrong with me to be worried about something like weight gain when I know what's in store. Sigh. I'm ashamed of myself, but I am being honest. Is weight gain in my future to add insult to injury??Hi Staci

I lost my mom in 1989 due to cancer. Took it very hard and it took nearly a year for me to snap out of it...I had lost a lot of weight...and think that all the stress from her dying, the family acting up and other things brought on my RA.

I used to worry so much about the weight gain...but now I'm 45 and some days just say the heck with it!  Prednisone was my friend and my enemy...it took away pain, but helped me put on more pound and I've always been a very thin person. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you gain too much...as my grandma would say, you need some skin on your bones in case you get sick.

MURF...DITTO!  I STARTED A POST AWHILE BACK ABOUT STRESS AND RA..L..DID IT DO SOMETHING TO US.  I LOST MY MOM AND DAD VERY CLOSE TO ONE ANOTHER, WENT THRU A BIG CAREER CHANGE, AND TWO DIVORCES...... THEN RA?  MAKES YOU THINK.

I WAS VERY TALL AND THIN; ALWAYS  SIZE 6-8 AND I'M 5'10".   AFTER LONG TERM PREDNISONE USE GIVEN ME BY AN MD, STILL UNDIAGNOSED, I GAINED 30 LBS!!!  WENT FROM TWIGGY TO JANE MANSFIELD...VERY CURVY.    I WAS UNABLE TO EXERCISE FOR A LONG TIME 1 1/2 YR BUT NOW OFF PREDNISONE NOW AND WALKING DAILY AND WATCHING WHAT I EAT...LOST 5 LBS BUT A START.  I REALLY DON'T WANT TO GO BACK TO A SIZE 6...TOO SKINNY, BUT I'D LIKE TO GO FROM SIZE 12 TO SIZE 10.

MAYBE IF WE WERE SKINNIER, PEOPLE WOULD BELIEVE WE REALLY ARE SICK!!  BUT WHEN THEY SEE US WITH MEAT ON OUR BONES THEY THINK WE ARE PERFECTLY HEALTHY.    OH WELL...

STACI...HOW MUCH PREDNISONE YOU ON??  DON'T PANIC.  RHEUMY'S USUALLY USE IT FOR SHORT TIME TILL MEDS KICK IN.  MY MD GAVE ME FOR SEVERAL YEARS CAUSE HE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG WITH ME.  SAID I DIDN'T HAVE RA CAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE A POSITIVE RF.  NOW I KNOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE RA WITHOUT A POSITIVE RF!!!  MD'S KNOW NOTHING ABOUT RA!!!

KarenNTx38577.8377314815Let me ask you this...Is Prednisone only for pain, or does it benifit in other ways? Because I am just starting with all this, the pain is not "that" bad, I'd rather have the pain then the weight. I know, I know, but believe me, it's not a vanity thing. It's more of a be healthy, having my Children not be ashamed of me (I don't think they are, at least not yet), etc...
Strange, but just typing it is like therapy. I'm actually starting to feel better Hey Karen...I'm not on Prednisone. I actually see the Rheumatologist for the first time on Thursday. I do have a positive RF and Sed Rate was elivated, with the pain I have in my shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, hips, knees, ankles and feet...yup both sides, luckily not real bad though, I'm prepared for what he has to say. I was just wondering if because I feel so strongly about the weight gain if I should just not take Prednisone and live with the pain, ya know? [QUOTE=KarenNTx]

I went from a 7 to a 14 in 13 years   I'm 5'7... I'd be happy to get down to a 12...back in the day I used to think a 12 was big but either time has changed or I have LOL. I can't see ever being even a 10 again. My problem was long term and over abuse of prednsione (before my good RD).  Every weekend I tell myself I'm going back to the gym on Monday...well this week I'm gonna do it.

Lost my dad 3 years after my mom, we weren't as close as they divorced when I was 5..but I think sometimes your body and mind go into overload...

Wonder if there are studies done on stress and RA?

MURPH, I AGREE.  IT'S THE LONG TERM USE OF PREDNISONE THAT WILL GET YA.  MOST RHEUMYS WILL NOT LET YOU USE FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME; ONLY TILL YOUR MEDS KICK IN MAX.

I PERSONALLY DEFINITELY THINK STRESS HAS CAUSED THE RA IN SOME WAY.

I've been on Pred since March and just now getting off of it...down to 5mg a day from 20mg.   I've lost 10 lbs in the past couple of mths..

After hearing all of you talk about gaining weight I'm starting to get concerned...I've read though that one of the symptoms of RA is weight loss??

Has anyone lost weight with this crappy disease?

Kat

OK Staci.  Everyone is going to get mad at me but I would avoid the prednisone if rd starts you on mtx or other dmards, nsaids.  I swear, the more prednisone I take, the more I need it.  The weight gain is an issue.  It is depressing enough to have this disease.  Prednisone also wreaks havocs with your moods.  I am feeling SO PMS, and I had a hysterectomy.  I can't wait to get off prednisone.  If I was not in extreme pain without it, I would not take it.  My opinion.  Don't get mad at me guys.

WE A L L HAVE HAD TO TAKE THEM AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER.

The bulk of my weight was gained from the depo medrol shots. I used to get them in the backside. At that time I was small and blew up. That was mid to late 1990's. Nothing else would take the pain and inflamation away except prednisone and depo medrol...I'd go in with horrible pain and the next day felt better. It was good and it was bad...

Thank you everyone...I really appreciate the time you guys take to answer questions and concerns posted to the board. Your all the best!!
