Medications and Vision Problems | Arthritis Information

Hi All,

I had an (first) appt with an opthalmologist Friday. My neuro suggested I go, but I was never clear on the reason. Since my last exam 6 months ago my vision has deteriorated considerable both near and distance. The dr said my new bifocal rx is very strong for a person my age. He reviewed my meds and when I started each etc and said he thinks it is at least partly from all the new meds and increased doses. Especially the pamelor and prednisone. He said I might get through a year with the new glasses if they leave my meds the same. Anyone ever hear of this? I know prednisone can cause glaucoma and cataracts, but didnt' know these meds could change my vision. Strangely, I had hypertropia found in my last exam, but now that problem is somehow gone.

Laker

Hi Laker, my vision changed dramatically in 15 months.  I just had an appt. 2 weeks ago with the eye doc.  The vision in my Rt. eye has deteriorated considerably and the Lt. eye has a cataract with much worse vision than the Rt.    I've been on Prednisone too long.  Am now tapering and down to 9mg.  My doctor also said that he feels that the meds are causing the deteriortion.  Hope that your vision stabilizes.  Are you tapering Pred. or do you have to stay on 5mg.?  I wouldn't think that 5mg of Pred. would cause your eyes to worsen.  Take care.  LindyThat is strange. My vision has actually gotten better over the last year.  I had a big problem with scratched cornea's and extreme dry eye the last time I went to the eye doctor.  She put in punctal plugs in my eye ducts and put me on restasis.

I hope it gets better!

Lindy,

How long have you been on prednisone? I have been on it steadily for about a year. And had several medrol packs in the 3 months before that. My dose was typically 10-15 mg, but at times I needed 20. My rheum said I could stay on 5, and I have been at 5 for a couple months now. My primary dr wants me off it though because of high blood pressure, so I am going to start a very slow taper, 1 mg a month soon.

Laker

Laker, I taper 1mg every 2 weeks but can only taper to 7.5 mg. my adrenals are lazy and won't kick back in.  I've been taking Pred.  about three and half years.  It's taken that long to find the right combo of drugs and to get the flare from hell under control.  I was on 35mg for about a year, then 25mg the second year, and then I started to taper but ran into some problems and had to stay at 15 mg. for quite awhile, and just recently have been able to taper to 9mg. and hopefully I'll be at 7.5 in a month.  It's been a long journey but I'm 75% better with Remicade and MXT.  If my adrenals start working I hope to be off Pred. by 2008.  Lindy
