Does illness cause flairs? | Arthritis Information

Ug. In spite of being on preventive antibiotics for 3 months, I got another UTI. I had been doing quite well, but now my joint pain is really kicking in and my mystery abdominal pain is quite severe. I am wondering if my body reacts to any illness or injury by causing widespread inflammation. Is this typical? I was going to start a taper of pred but am thinking I should wait. Had to stop the imuran because of the infection, but that shouldn't really make a difference yet.

I don't really know, but it seems to me that if you get sick it would stimulate your immune system.  Maybe that would cause a flare.  Hope you feel better soon.when i get sick my joints get worse...

< =text/>_popupControl(); For me and for Danielle when we are sick we ache way more.  I am not sure if you should start a taper of pred while you have an active UTI.  You are already immune suppressed due to the RA meds and prednisone really lowers our ability to fight infection.  I really would call your doc before starting a pred taper.  Is it possible for you take a couple of days and just do some serious resting?  Also, have you talked with your doc about checking to see if you have IC (interstitial cystitis)?

I really hope you start feeling better soon!!!

My dr is doing a culture, I don't know if that will be helpful. She did say this might be due to inflammation rather than infection. I don't know anyything about IC but I will ask. I go back in October for followup because I am on so many meds and having a lot of side effect problems. The UTIs are ridiculously frequent. To go 3 months without one is actually good for me. Came home early from work yesterday and today. I was just too tired to function, but I am feeling better now. I won't taper until they retest and I know the UTI is gone.

I notice you're on macrodantin, I assume for the bladder infection.  I also used to take that to prevent UTI's but after a while I got infections anyway.  It seems I became tolerant of the macrodantin and it was no longer effective.  Could it be the same for you?  Maybe you should ask your doctor about changing your antibiotic.  yea look into IC.....mine was horrible all last year constatly in the bathroom, and bladder pain, i was lucky and got dx with IC first urologist appt but i did get checked for many many UTIs...always neg though

Yep, you may want to look at IC, and you may not want to wait a whole long time.

My IC after about six months of treatment is really good.  I hate the treatment, but it does work really well.  I think the culture will come back negative, at least I am hoping.

You do need to take some serious sleep time.  You also should eliminate acids, sodas and processed food as much as you can.  I still have problems if I eat a big speghetti dinner.  Tomatoes are my worst trigger food.  I love tomato based food...chili, greek pockets...whole nine yards.  You can actually see if you can help it by eliminating some of those and see what happens.

Sorry...got on a tangent with the IC...yep...always flare with any sickness...no matter how mild.

thats how i got dx not tests just kept a pee diary lol and wrote down what foods seemed to make me worse. tomatoes are big for me too but now that im undercontrol i can handle a little

That is interesting about the macrodantin and also foods and IC. I think I will need to call the dr and go back today anyway. I am retaining fluids, that doesn't seem like a good sign. Not much sleep last night-my daughter went to the ER with a concussion from playing football.

< =text/>_popupControl(); When it rains it pours, eh?  I hope your daughter feels better soon.  Please let us know what your doc says.  And *try* to find some time for YOU!!!
