Can anyone tell me about Lymes? | Arthritis Information

My 10yr old had developed this "rash" which I thought at first was just from his football pads rubbing on him. (Having some brain fog here...can't think of what I want to say.)- I actually put some of my 1yr olds diaper rash cream on it the first night he showed it to me. It was warm to the touch, and it was painful--like "stinging" he said. Also itchy..This was on a Friday night.( He told me he first noticed it on Wed.but didn't tell me) So Saturday morning checked it---it was darker, looked more like a big bruise- still warm to the touch....by the way- it was located on his left side/stomach and kinda wrapped around his left hip.(covered about 8-10" of skin) Again--about the same location as his football pads had been...CHAFFING..that's the word I was trying to think of..(damn brain fog) So I show his coach..wondering if he had gotten hit there and it was just a bad bruise--not sure why it was itchy and warm though. They had the team physical therapist look..he wasn't sure, but thought we should get it checked out. He ended up playing football that day. So we watched it Sunday, figuring if it spread or changed in appearance we'd head to the ER, otherwise we'd wait and go to the Dr.'s office Monday. Well.duh- that Monday was Labor Day and the Dr.'s office was closed. By Monday night it was larger, headed to the Dr's Tuesday morning---by now it was larger and had a red outline on part of it.

The Dr wanted to do a Lymes Disease test on him. I'm thinking he's nuts because there wasn't a tick bite that we could see, and he didn't have any other symptoms...He was, however in the woods with his dad the previouse weekend for an archery shoot. He also started him on antibiotics just to be safe until we got the results back. So let's see...it was 3 wks to the day that we finally got the results. It was positive for Lymes. I was shocked. But he said they do a more extensive test and he only met 1 of the 3 criteria for Lymes, so the meds he already received took care of it. I told him he's still complaining somedays that that side is hurting..he said just keep an eye on it.

Does anyone know more about this? Do I need to worry about effects from it?

I know this isn't a "lymes board".....but I know you're all pretty knowledgable here.

I have to leave now--but I'll be back tomorrow to see if anyone responded. Thanks so much.

SOrry to say it's not me....but I hope someone will be along soon to help. I'm sure you've already tried to google it to se what you can fine; but if by chance you haven't do that. In the mean time someone will likely be along soon with some sort of experience that might be helpful.

Hope it's nothing serious. I know all too well how scary it is when one  of our children is ill.

Take Care.

I can't help you out with Lymes but like Lovie said someone will be on soon who can help you.  Am really sorry to hear about your son's illness but it's an example of how easy it is to acquire Lymes.  Lindy

OK, I'm no expert but I do know a few things from posts I've seen from Lymies.

There is a HUGE split in how Lymes is handled.  There is the CDC with their own admittedly faulty tests (Western Blot and Elisa) and there are the ILADS people - and they are NOT happy in the way Lyme Disease is handled in this country.  If your son tested positive on the CDC tests - he's probably at risk and if he's having such a huge reaction...he needs a Lyme Literate Doc.  Below is a link to ILADS site with their complaints on the new guidelines.

http://www.ilads.org/publications_cameron_11_2006.pdf

and to their main site.

Also, there are a LOT of people on www.roadback.org that are Lymies and are crawling their way back to health.  I met a woman with a child in MI that has had problem after problem with Lymes.  Her daughter is only able to have a 'holding pattern' with her battle with the disease.  Search the Roadback for more detailed  info - I think the Lymies hang out at www.Lyme.net but that might be the 'other side'.

I am not trying to scare you but I do think you need to do more than the traditional 2 weeks of antibiotics - just from the posts I've read.

Please continue your research and tell us what you find.

Hugs,

Pip

My son had Lyme Disease this past winter.  Unfortunately he developed Lyme on the heels of mono!  It was a tough school year for him, he missed a lot of school.  He took two rounds of antibiotics, and seems to be recovered now.  He took a 2 1/2 hr. hike today, has been back to his usual activities for a while now.

I wouldn't worry too much, especially if he had only one of the criteria.  It sounds like you have caught it early and he should be okay, but just watch him and see if he develops extreme fatigue, headaches, fevers, sore joints, depression.  Those are the main symptoms, and don't hestitate to press for an additional course of antibiotics if you feel he needs it.
I have just been tested for Lymes but the tests were neg. I was bitten by a tick 16 years ago and then all these years later I developed RA. I do know there is a rash at the site of the bite, headaches ,nausea, but as you say there is no sign of tick bite. Just be careful its not a hidden bite. when i got bitten mine was by my navel but my daughter got bitten too and hers was embedded in her hairline. Your son might have just picked up an alergic reaction to something. I hope you find the cause soon.

This is where you get to kick me in the BE hind, but this is one of those things that drives me NUTS (one of many, as I get older) -

It is called Lyme Disease - no "S".

Pickey pickey me, but you love me anyway, right???

I don't know much about it other than a few articles I have read on the web after my son was bit by a tick.

The doc told me to watch out for fever and sore joints.  If he refuses to play or eat.  But basically since the tick was big he wasn't worried.  He said mostly deer ticks carry lyme and the are so small.  From the way he described them I wonder how we would even see something that tiny.

Good luck to your son and I hope all turns out well.

Honey,

I think you're adorable.  I just use what I see the Lymies use.  Just trying to be hep!

Pip

P.S.  The best test out there is by IgeneX.  Me, and my kid, I wouldn't take the chance they'd end up like us.  I'd hang with the ILADS people and do what they said "just to be sure".  Note my terror over my baby's possibly having another AI disease.  Heck, even us adults - I'd get the IgeneX test (I did, was negative) just to be sure what I was dealing with.  At least Lyme is curable.

Please visit Lymenet.org....ASAP The disease can linger long after the Reg Dr;s think it's gone. Good Luck

Damn -

That's the web address I was thinking of!

Pip

Sorry I'm just getting back here....crazy crazy at our house this past week.

THANK YOU all SO much for all of your input on this!! I really appreciate it!

HillHoney- I still love ya- and thanks for letting me know the proper term. Lyme Disease...got it.!

I just called our Dr.'s office to get a copy of the lab report faxed to me..just so I can see it--then I'm going to go visit the website you gave me...and probably follow up with our pediatrician. (we just saw our family Dr first...usually only see the ped for "big stuff." Not that I don't trust our family Dr...just to be safe.)

So far the only thing that has me a bit worried is that he's complained a few different times that his low back hurts..which is new.

5 years ago he was bit by the "bad" tick...but he never devoloped a rash or anything like this thing he just had. But we did see the tick, got him out---took him to the ER, etc. There was a black spot there for a LONG time, but again- he never developed rash or Lyme sypmtoms. THere's no way this could have something to do with back then, right?

Ok....gonna go check out that website...thanks again everyone!!
