Charcot foot- anybody have it? | Arthritis Information

I had extensive foot surgery 6 weeks ago and found out this week that the surgeon thought my midfoot total collapse was Charcot foot.  This totally blew me away as it is an extremely serious sydrome which can lead to amputation.  Today my primary care doctor said that she does not think my Charcot foot is from diabetes, which is the most common cause.   She wondered if it was caused by a genetic form of arthritis.   Charcot foot is characterized by bones that get soft and are absorbed. It is like they melt.

Has anyone else had anything like this?  I need information and a hug, I guess.

Lynne

I can't say that I've even HEARD of that before! How scary!!

Here's your hug though, you DO need one!!!

I have not heard of that either.  Sorry you had to hear those words though and I hope it is not true.

No info, but a big hug to you my friend.  Is it only the bones in the foot that are affected?  Is it in only one foot?Big huggles ~~ < =text/>_popupControl(); Wow..just wow.  I am so sorry to hear this.  Major major big gentle hugs to you.  Is there anything that they can do for that?  I just wanted to cry and wrap my arms around you when I read this.  Just wow.  (((HUGS)))

Thank you all!     It is in my other foot, too.  I have scheduled surgery on that one on November 26th.  I don't want to do it this year, but we have met our health insurance deductible and it will be 'free'.

I need to talk with my rheumy and see what he says and if he agrees.  It is good news that the diabetes, which is very under control, is not the cause.  That would mean that I have a lot of other damage in nerves and circulatory system.

A few screws and pins and 7 incisions and my foot is hopefully functional.  I am now allowed to put partial weight on the foot and the bones looked good on x-ray.  So maybe the surgeon is wrong.

As you guys know, arthritis is very tricky to diagnose.

Lynne

Glad you're feeling better!!! I hope he's wrong too. For your sake, I mean sheesh! Who wants to hear their foot is melting?????

I am so tired of surgeries- 4 since May 2006 and one scheduled for Nov 2007. It is wearing me down.   It would be nice to have 2008 be surgery free.

Thanks again for your hugs and support.

Lynne

So sorry to hear this.  I hope that the mystery can be cleared up and it is not serious.

Lynne,

I haven't never heard of that either.... So Sorry,

hugs and more hugs

I have never heard of it.  I hope it's something that can be fixed.  And isn't really what they are saying now.

More *hugs*

Oh sweetie, how scary for you!  I'm glad to hear you can have surgery to correct it - and free is always good, lol. I always seem to just get close to meeting my yearly deductible and then the next year starts. I start over again Oct 1, ugh! I hope and pray your Doctors are able to fix you up and that you'll be out running around good as new.  My best wishes and hugs to you!!!!

I try not to listen to the 'It might be this that or another horrible thing'. It usually is not.

I especially do not listen when they do not send me for a whole mess of tests....You just have a very badly damaged by RA foot. You already knew that! Sometimes docs other than rhuemes are shocked at the damage caused by RA.

Hugs
