Travelling with pmr | Arthritis Information

Hi everyone, I would appreciate some tips on travelling with pmr. Several of
you have mentioned trips you have taken. I am going on vacation Oct. 1 for
a week to Colorado (Hi Marrianne) with 3 of my kids. They will take care of
me, I know, but I'm still a little anxious about running out of energy and
being a bummer for them. I will have a 2 1/2 hour flight and then a 2 hour
drive.   We have a beautiful cabin reserved In Estes Park and will visit with
family there. I am really looking forward to this and want to make a good
time of it.

Thanks,
Geralyyn

Hi, Geralyn -

Are you on prednisone?  If so, I would take a little more for the duration of the trip.  You can up your prednisone dosage for a week or so without worrying too much about withdrawal symptoms when you go back to your regular dose.

Geralyn,  I've taken two fairly strenuous trips while on pred.  On a sailing cruise in the Virgins, I upped my dose from 12.5 to 15 for the trip and did pretty well.  Went to Ireland and just stayed on the dose at the time and other than getting a bit stiff on the plane (get up and walk a lot) that went well too.

One bit of advice from those two trips.  Drink plenty of the local beverages...rum in the Virgins, and Guiness and Jamesons in Ireland.  Don't know the local beverage in Colorado unless it might be Coors.

    Relax and have fun!

I was just about to post asking for help on pretty much the same topic!
Thank you Geralyn for starting the thread!
Several parts to my question:
I asked my Rheumy about bumping before my trip next weekend (3 days,
2 hour flight, wedding). She really didn't want me to bump because I have
not yet reduced at all (plan was to reduce when I return) and she didn't
want my high dose to be any higher (20 mg now).

Add to that: This week I have started having some shoulder and hip girdle
pain for the 1st time since I started on pred. Seems to be activity and diet
related. Thought about bumping Monday if i didn't feel any better,

What do you all think?

Geralyyn,

If it were me I'd rather take a little more pred for a while and have the memories of a wonderful vacation with my family.  I wouldn't want to miss the chance for more good memories of family and friends and travel and fun and joy...need I go on?

You go and have a good time!!!!!!

I haven't been on a vacation since I came down with pmr.  Either I didn't feel good enough (before I was dx'd and had pred) or didn't have enough money.  You go for it girl!!!!!

Kathy

Hi Geralyn!

I would just make sure you have some aleve with you in case your pain gets worse, i would not upset your pred schedule by taking more.

I was just in Estes Park (I live 1.5 hour away from there in Castle Rock) The Elk should still be there to be observed in october.

If you go to Rocky mountain park (of course you are) a wonderful walk (even for us PMR people) is walking around "sprague lake".You'll see it on the map they give you at the entrance . It is not too far from Estes. It is sooooo beautiful there! Go EARLY or you will stand in line to get in!

I took some pics....click on the link below.   (click "view as slideshow" on the far right)

marianne195239355.6347569444i too have worried about traveling with PMR.....but you know, try to manage your pain, think of it you,  may as well enjoy that beautiful scenery in Colo. than sit home with the same pain.

We are leaving by car from Nova Scotia to Ontario, tomorrow a.m., but plan on taking our time, stopping when I am tired etc...my husband is a saint...and he does all the driving as well.  Gotta go while we can, there'll be many a day we wish we had tried.

cheers Rose
Marrianne, thanks for the pictures! It's so beautiful, isn't it? I went there
many times growing up in Greeley but haven't been in years. Can't wait to
share it with my kids. I hope others here look at them. You'll get a boost.
Thanks all for your suggestions. I will take some extra pred with me but
hope not to use it. And I intend to go for it and have a great time.

Have a good week, everyone
GeralynMarianne,

Gorgeous pictures!!! I used to live near Morrison, Colorado (near Golden).

Geralyn and Rose, have a wonderful time on your trips. Whether you end up with more pain or not ( and I hope not), it is so important not to put your lives on hold because of the PMR. Go for it and enjoy!!!!

Reni
