Surgery and pred? | Arthritis Information

Hi All, Sorry for the huge number of posts... Tell me if I am overstepping.

I have surgery scheduled for Oct 30th. I have had glaucoma for years. Had
surgery that worked 8 years ago & normal pressure since. The pred has
NOT caused any problems. However, as often happens with this
procedure, one incision has failed and the pressure is high again (yes we
are sure it isn't the pred). The plan is to correct it. The Opthamologist
says the pred will control the inflamation so he is glad not concerned
about me being on it. As I think about it, I am worried about infection. I
plan on talking to rheumy Monday, but would like to know -

Has anyone had surgery while on PRED? any special precautions? What
was your experience?
pgrI read someplace that you have to take a bit more of prednisone when you have surgery.  But, the doctors will know that if that is so.  MaryI hope someone with experience can reassure you Phyl. As for all the posts, there is no rule about the number of posts, surely! The more the better, I say, keep em coming!

Hi PGR,

What I read was similar to what Mary said. If prednisone was given at a low level prior to surgery, patients may now be given an increased dose to boost the body's response to the stress of surgery.

Hope everything goes well for you!!!!

Kathy

Hi pgr, I had cataract surgery in both eyes this year.   A separate surgery is
required for each eye. I didn't have to increase my pred. but was given
prednesolone drops for aftercare, as is everyone. It is wonderful to have
good vision again. I hope your surgery goes well too. Is it an outpatient
procedure?

GeralynHi PGR,  I don't know anything about surgery and pred., but I wish you good luck with the surgery.

Shirley
Hi pgr, We are all here, right with you, hoping and praying for the best
possible results from the surgery.

Waiting to hear, LibethThank you all. Yes Geralyn, I have had both cataract & glaucoma surgery in
both eyes previously and they do do each eye seperately. This is a follow-up
to the glaucoma surgery and will only be in 1 eye.

I will call the rheumy tomorrow and get her feedback too. Will let you know.

HI pgr:  I for one love your posts, so keep them coming.

I get put to sleep for all my dentisry work (another long story, for another time).  I have a dentist appt Oct 26th and the dentist told me he would have to give me added Pred for the surgery, I don't know how much.

All the best, pgr, on your surgery.  I guess everything we go through has to be thought out when we have to consider PMR and Pred!

I have had to have more dental work since being on pred than in nearly my entire life. Wonder if the pred also leaches the teeth? Anyway my dentist and Dr always up the pred from 10 to 25mg  and to take at least 2 hours before the dental appointment.  I go again next week and if I need to have work done I guess it will be from 5 to 15mgs this time. I had not heard of any one else having to do this and when I posted a thread last year, seems not many others had been instructed to increase pred before dental surgery, either.

Good Luck, you sound as if you are in good care... and keep posting as much as you want. I  enjoy reading everyones post and mostly they have the questions and answers I have been wondering about. I especially love it when we get on a fun thread
