American Disabilities Act | Arthritis Information

A few nights ago it was on the news about a small youth center that had to close and leaving children without a place to go.  All because a man couldn't get up 5 steps.  It seems his Nephew had some kink of party and he couldn't get up the steps...They offer to carry him up and they offer to move everything down stairs for them...no, they couldn't please him...he left and sued.  The place couldn't afford to put in ramps and spent thousands on lawers and lost.  Now they are in over there heads and the kids are the ones out in the cold....The sad part is this man has 3 lawsuites going all for the same reason....Why couldn't the family see the steps before booking the center, their son went there almost nightly.

I'm disabled....But I think that the American Disabilities Act goes too far some time.  There is no way every place in the country can make it safe for the disabled.  Some get mad if someone offers to  help or opens a door for them, but yet they want people to cater to them.  We are handicapped, we can't do everything, We have to live with it.  So what if someplace don't have a ramp, Go somewhere else, they are the ones that lose the money that you would have spend.   We can't dance, so we should close all places that has danceing?  I think they should do all they can to help us, but it shouldn't be at the cost of other people....

Wow, you are spot on Rusty.  Because we are disabled, we cannot suddenly consider ourselves and our problems above others rights.

Thanks for making me think about this.

Wow I have never heard of the "emotional support animal".  Learn something new everyday.  Or so "they" say, whoever "they" are lol.

Rusty I do agree with what you said.

I'm on the opposite end of this at work.........our front counter is NOT handicap friendly. I HATE IT!! We get people in on a regular basis who are in a wheelchair, and I can barely SEE THEM, let alone get them to sign papers and hear my instructions. It's insane!!! And so very frustrating. We are also about a mile away from Sacred Heart Hospital, which is a TERRIFIC hospital that is always doing conferences and classes, and all kinds of research and stuff. All of their out of town doctors stay with us, and a lot of times they bring dogs of varying jobs. It's always a battle with the employees to get them to SHUT UP and not ask these people what the dogs are for. (We are not a pet friendly hotel) We even had one employee walk up to a lady with a seeing eye dog in training, and say "why do you have this dog, we can't have dogs here, what's your disability?" The poor woman was SO UPSET she left that night. And I can't say that I blame her.

Okay I'm done rambling......lol
What about people like me who have severe animal hair allergies?  I don't want a dog or cat or llama (Jasmine I can't believe that!) on the plane, restaurant or church.  If someone is blind and has a dog, fine I will stay as far away from the dog I could.

So I wonder if my severe asthma trumps someones emotional support animal with the ADA?

I'm very  emotional when it came to my dog I had her 16 years,  She died June 4th. and I still cry when I think of her.  We traveled for years with her, If she wasn't allowed we would sleep in the car,  We took turns eating or I would eat in car and let husband go in, when it was too hot.  She was very special.

You mean all thoses years I could of took her in,  as an Emotional Support  Dog....

My daugther wanted a cat so she got her doctor to sign a paper because she lives a lone in the apt. and need something....LOL...She's 48 and able to do what she wants, so she has an emotional support cat.

Hey Katie: Think I would rather fly with the Llama, and kick the jackass off the plane.....I love my animals, but I put peoples feeling above the animals, a lot of people have allergies like Mary b. So I never push it,  if someone said something about my dog, I alway took her to the  car and alway asked before taking her in.  Well thats the kicker, these people DID ask us about the dogs, and we approved of them being there. This employee was just a jerk (still is, actually) I love my cats, but I would never insist that I be allowed to take them into a restaurant because I needed the "emotional support."  And especially to a hotel/motel that didn't allow pets.  Some people seek out non-pet hotels specifically because of allergy problems (almost always cat allergies)... you can't just run a vacuum over the carpet and make all the cat dander disappear.  You'll actually just stir it up and make the problem worse for the next guest.  I have a sister who is horribly allergic to cats, and she even gets a bit wheezy and sneezy when we go to visit her, because we have cat allergens all over us.  She can't ever come to our house. So what is your suggestion for the seeing eye dogs and their trainers? They bring them to our hotel to train them how to assist in a public environment. We typically have the room they stayed in sanitized after they leave, as we are very aware of people's allergies. Cats are the worst offenders, by far - probably because they're all over the place.  Dogs usually aren't nearly as big of a deal... they typically don't climb the drapes or sit on the desk/TV/table/spare pillows on the shelf in the closet.  Some hotels have designated rooms where guests with animals can stay (or designated rooms where guests with animals can never stay).  For most people it isn't a big deal; people with severe allergies usually know which hotels are "safer" for them.  And if the rooms are cleaned with a HEPA vacuum, it's usually not as big of a deal.  But the typical beat-up hotel vacuum can stir up more dust than it picks up.  An even bigger problem is when people sneak pets into a non-pet hotel.  The hotel doesn't know there's been a pet in there, and the next guest may be expecting a low-allergen room. Oh we LOVE snagging the people who "sneak" animals in. We charge them an extra 0 for cleaning. And they never sneak their animals in again.  Katie...

you could have specific rooms only for assisting pets. That way, anyone that stays in those rooms KNOWS pets were there. If the hotel is booked except those rooms, then offer them and explain. Sounds good to me!

Typically we just keep them on the first floor. And I guess so far we've done a good job cleaning them, cause no one's complained!

Our front counter still pisses me off though. There's just no way to comfortably check in if you're in a wheelchair. It's totally unfair!

I adore dogs.  But since RA, came horrendous allergies to dogs and cats.  I cannot even stay at son and DIL's house cause I get huge welts and start wheezing within five minutes of being there.  Fore  me it isn't the hair, it's dander that flakes off the skin and it is almost impossible to get out of carpet.

I had to get hardwood floors in my house because of all the new allergies.  So when I travel, I always ask for a petfree room and it is usually fine.  The few times it hasn't been, I go to the desk and they can see the welts and hear me wheezing so they get another room pretty quick

It is so not fair to get bad allergies to your favorite pet along w/all the pain of RA.

OOPs, hope I didn't vear to far off your topic Rusty, sorry

I often think that businesses/organizations/ individuals make the ADA far more complex than it is.. have a portable ramp at the center...problem solved

an example...  our local village hall is in a 1914  old carnagie library. it most definitely isnt accessible.. but rather than simply add on a small  space for an elevator and  one unisex accessible bathroom, they are going to move to another building and rennovate for hundreds of thousands of dollars  more... what the heck are they thinking??

have animal rooms in hotels same as smoking rooms..

this isnt rocket science..

It was on the news last night that a local contractor is going to bulid a lift chair (free), so the youth center can open back up and others have gave money to help.  I still say they souldn't be able to close a youth center because of someone who loves to sue.  It's not right to hurt others to get your way.

My bil use work for a big motel change, he travels from one to another.   Do you all know that they do not change the bed spreads unless they look dirty or they get new ones.  I have known maids that didn't change the sheet if they didn't look used,  You never know what you are sleeping on.When we stay in motels I ask for clean bed linen and change the beds myself.  I don't use the bedspread that's on the bed and refrain from walking on the floor barefoot and I'm not even close to being a germaphobic - honest.  I just know that I'm not sleeping or walking where strangers have.  I wear my pool shoes in the shower.  It may sound crazy but my immune system is shot and to me it sounds smart not crazy.  When we stay in motels in Mexico we stay at the Love Motels, they rent by the hour and the reason we stay there is they are CLEAN.  The whole room is tiled from ceiling and floor and is hosed down with disinfectants once it's vacated.  The sheets are clean and ironed and the spreads are changed to washed ones each time.  It's bizarre how clean they are.  They always have wonderful Mexican food delivery to your room.  What more could one want, clean room and great food.  LindyI agree with Lindy on hotel rooms.  I do the same thing.  I am sorry but your description of the LOVE hotel that is rented by the hour just brought one thing to mind Mary B., They're actually called "The no tell motels" and I was really reluctant to spend the night even though all of our friends told us how clean and friendly they were.  They were right and believe me we've been too tired from defensive driving on the Mexican roads to think about anything but sleep........LindyWell, I love the idea.  I wonder if I could redo my house that way?
