Hi all, which do you think works best plaguenil or sulfasalazine? Thanks for your input.

Hi!  Since I've only taken Plaquenil and am allergic to sulfa drugs, I can't compare the two for you, but the Plaquenil seems to be working pretty well.  Of course, I'm also taking MTX so maybe that's what's working!  Anyway, I'm sure there's someone out there who has experience with both and will be able to give you the answer you need.  6 of one half dozen of the either.  Effacacy is about the same.  Sulfasalazine does work a bit faster but does have a few more side effects than plaquenil.  Plaquenil seems to be a more popular combonition medication

Since I was already on plaquenil when I started sulfasalazine, it's hard to say which one works best.  But if someone I knew was asking my opinion on which to try first, I'd say try plaquenil.

At the beginning I was put on plaquenil and it did nothing.  Went off of it for a while and then went to mtx.  A while later added plaquenil and it did seem to help.  So for me when added to mtx, plaquenil does help.

I took Sulfersalizine and then plaquinel later. Personally I liked Plaquinel better because I can't stand those huge round sulfersalizine pills. Honestly that was my main complaint.

I think we all react differently to different medications. Both are rather mild DMARDS. Can't really hurt to try either provided you aren' allergic to sulfer drugs. Some are highly allergic.

My first drug was Plaquenil.  I did really great on it while taking 200 mg twice a day.  When I tried to cut back on the Plaquenil, I started having flares again, so my RD added Sulfasalazine.  I had horrible stomach and intestinal problems with Sulfasalazine.  I couldn't even make it to the maximum dosage.  So I have to say I liked Plaquenil better even though it takes a while to start working.
