skin and pred | Arthritis Information

I read in one of the post about what is happening to some of our skin from being on pred, but can nor remember which one, so i started a new one.

my skin is blotchy and small bumps pop up everywhere, i do not want to call them pimples because they are very tiny.  I also have been getting a lot  of black an blue marks.

this past week I have cracks in the corner of my lips, very red and inflamed

i did get my first shot of methotrexate on tuesday, but any of the signs i have are too soon for it to be that

i did notice the day after the shot , the front of my legs hurt, i think that area is called the shins, not sure if it was from the shot.

if anyone of you have had the methotrexate, any info you can pass on to me would be greatly appreciated, if it did any good or no good or any side effects you had

I'll be up having a cigarello with Bob

Georgiana

Georgiana,

Don't know anything about methotrexate, but as long as you're having skin problems, we can't have you getting blisters from rowing the boat.  Yes, you're welcome on the aft deck with us guys but no cigarillos!  Gotta smoke a real one to be with us guys. Ask pgr555.  She didn't get the whip assignment from puffing on a toy cigar! Meanwhile, the rest of you ladies keep rowing.  We're making progress!

I didn't have any noticeable side affects with Methotrexate.  My rheumy started me on it right away with the Prednisone because she said it might take a month to be effective.  I did get a raised liver count with it.

The reason she prescribed it was because she was worried I wouldn't be able to stay on prednisone because of my glaucoma.  She was right, it did raise the pressure in one of my eyes.  So she wrote up a schedule to tapper off of it.  I was on something like 8 and she took me down and off in about six weeks.  Then I had a blood test and the liver count was still up and she took me off of that too.

I told her I was taking Tylenol and aspirin and would try to get along on that.  I suppose I am about 80% normal.  When I wake up in the morning after being in one position though, I am really stiff.  As the day goes on and I move around, I'm not as stiff.

Georgiana....a lot of people on the RA baord are on MTX. You may find many answers there! Georgiana, how are you today? I also have had the shin pain, dunno what it is, comes and goes. Weird. Also the blothes and have had the mouth corner cracks on and off over the years. Sometimes VitBs help with that, but in general make sure you drink plenty of water and use a lanolin baby nappy cream on the sore spots. Hope the new drug works for you very soon.

This ship should be declared smoke-free! You'd never get away with it in New Zealand, the whole country is governed by smoke-free legislation - it is illegal to smoke in bars and restaurants, shops, the workplace, schools etc and within the boundaries of hospitals, inside and out. Also in many public places outdoors.

Sorry Bob but cigars stink! chico39361.0214351852

Crewmembers,

It's interesting how we all differ in our symptoms and I'm starting to wonder if there aren't some interactions with medicines and drugs other than pred and MTX.  And it wouldn't surprise me if there were some allergic reactions involved too.

Take the fatigue symptom, for example.  It is usually listed as one of the aspects of PMR, but when you mention extreme fatigue, it could be paired with anti-histamine intake, for example, in addition to pred.  Also, if any of you are drinking grapefruit juice, that's supposed to increase the effects of many drugs.

Not to invade our privacy, but when we write about what's going on maybe it would help identify some problems if we list all the meds we're taking.  We might find some common elements in all our anecdotal descriptions...we're unlikely to get much input from most rheumys, whose advice seems pretty much limited to dosage of one or two drugs and how to taper off them.

Now as to "whatever floats our boat".  It floats on HOPE, and it moves thru that ocean with the rowing effort primarily of you ladies.  That's why us men can stand on the aft deck with our smelly cigars, accompanied by one or two ladies on sick leave, who are encouraged to stand upwind to avoid the smoke.  Georgiana, of course, mingles with the smokers due to her predeliction for even more smelly cigarillos (she might as well be smoking tarred rope). We're not going to put into port in New Zealand for fear the smoke police will get us!  Not unless Chico promises to post bail for the entire crew. Chico, do you guys still have pubs!  Or are they next?
