PMR, Pred and Meniere’s disease | Arthritis Information

I always seem to be asking questions and you are all so patient and helpful, but here goes again.

In the last two days I have been suffering from, what one dear friend calls 'the dizzy donkeys'!  I have a spinning sensation (Vertigo), almost like I am falling and a dull headache.   In the past both my brother and I have had Ménière's disease which is an inflammation of the ear channel that runs at the back of the head which causes these symptoms.  Apparently it is an off again, on again thing.  My question, having PMR and being on Pred, would this cause the same symptoms?  Has anyone else suffered from these symptoms?

Of course, now I guess I blame everything on PMR and Pred.

Hello, Missy. This won't solve your problem, but I thought it might be reassuring to know that there's someoneout there who has the same tendency as you. I've been suspected of having PMR based on my symptoms and think I will know shortly. Anyway, once that was a strong probability, whenever I have had a symtom, I, too, have been inclined to ascribe it to PMR. There have been times when I have been dizzy and I also have a headache daily in the form of pressure across my forehead. In my case, recently I've begun to wonder if I have become allergic to my two wonderful cats that I've had for six years. From what I gather everyone does react in their individualized ways in addition to our overlapping symptoms, but I do struggle to keep my options open and not attribute everything necessarily to PMR. Untangling all this is tough business. I hope some of our more knowledgable members can provide you with something more specific. Good luck. Hugh

Thank you so much, Sean, for taking the time to respond.  In afterthought I guess my question is not the best for this forum.  Sometimes in sharing with others who have PMR and getting 'realistic' feedback answers concerns I have.  When I have had this ailment in the past the dr told me to take Dramamine (strange, but true) so that is what I am doing now.

I do hope you get a dx soon on your symptoms.  Not knowing and therefore not being treated is very frustrating.  I sure hope it is not your cats, that would be the same as being allergic to your children.

Missy, if you have had menieres in the past, chances are you are having it again. I don't know that menieres is an inflammation? I thought it was when the fluid in the cochlea in the inner ear, which normally works like a spirit level, floods out for some reason, can't really remember the details. I do know that salt in the diet increases attacks of menieres. Anyhow, I don't recall ever reading about a connection between menieres and PMR, which would interest me, as I was diagnosed with "early atypical menieres" 2 years ago. Thankfully, the tinnitus etc I had then has now gone. It is a really horrible thing and I hope yours soon goes! I know that sometimes pred can cause dizziness, but not the typical menieres type of dizziness which is vertigo-like.

Thanks, Chico.  I guess I have come to the same conclusion.  Maybe I am just getting paranoid about these drugs I am on and PMR.
