drug interactions | Arthritis Information

Dear Folks,  I brought up the question of drug interactions in the "skin and pred" thread and decided to check Google for help.  If you enter "drug interaction" you'll get all kinds of sources.  I picked one that said you could list up to 20 drugs: http://www.medscape.com/druginfo/druginterchecker

I listed the six medicines I'm currently taking and there were two interactions with enteric aspirin.  The prednisone reduces the effect of the aspirin. And the aspirin reduces the effect of the ACE inhibitor I'm taking for moderately high blood pressure.  Both were news to me.

So it couldn't hurt to pick one of the checkers from the Google list and have a look at what your interactions might be.  You can also ask a pharmacist.

Good thought Bob, and even supplements like calcium and iron, and foods like soy affect each other and also medications. It's a bit of a minefield and you need to be on top of your medications yourself I think, not just assume that the prescribing doctor will consider all these things, although I would hope that serious interactions would be rare. But often it's a case of impaired absorption of one drug or the other, and just spacing doses of the clashing drugs a few hours apart is necessary.

Hi Bob!

I have had pain in my right foot since I visited Portugal a week ago and as it does not seem to reduce, I want to try new medicins that I already have at home. Then I remembered that you wrote about how to check for interaction of medicines. Found that very useful. Thanks!

Hi Ragnar

I had a bad pain in my foot, along the instep, which started in early August.
The pain woke me up at night if I turned over. It started when I was on
holiday and walking a lot, and had tripped over tree roots twice and fallen.
It carried on for over a month, and then I stopped noticing it, and it's now
gone completely. Hope yours goes soon.

Margaret

Hi Margaret

Thanks for your post. To-day I have tried Panocod (Swedish medicine containing Acetaminophen and codein). At least it made it possible for me to walk in downtown while visiting a relative in Stavanger, Norway. I took the bus back and forth and had a good day in the sunshine we have after the heavy rain yesterday.

Have a nice weekend all of you

Ragnar

Thank you for posting that very informative cite.  I also take a blood pressure pill for moderately high blood pressure.  It was in the 150 range.

I find that aspirin interacts with it.  It is Lisino-HCTZ.  I have been taking my blood pressure at home and it is running back at 140 or so..some days high and some days low even with the pill.   I will have to try not taking aspirin and see if it comes down.

It is so strange, I take aspirin for two/three days and it seems to quit working, then I take Tylenol..

I had very interesting day on Wednesday.  On Tuesday night when I went to bed, I took 4 Ibuprofen.  I was just disgusted about not sleeping.   I set my alarm for 7:00 a.m. because I had an 8:30 a.m. doctor's appointment.  As I was setting the alarm, I thought to my self that I'd be awake at 6:30 a.m. anyway.

Well....I forgot to turn it on I just set the time.  So at 8:30 the phone rang and I sat up and grabbed the phone.   After I had told them I'd be there in five minutes and hung up, I realized that I didn't have any pain anywhere in my body.  I couldn't believe it.  I was feeling the way I did after starting the Prednisone.

As the day wore on, I still was feeling really well, but the stiffness started coming back late in the day.   I  tried the four Ibuprofen last night, but there was no affect at all.  I didn't' sleep well and I hurt when I got up.  It so was strange...evidently something started working right for awhile and then quit.

I am beginning to believe more and more every day it is the food I eat.  I quit sugar and can really tell the difference.  I went out to lunch and it was a group lunch and a baked potato was served.   Maybe it is in the nightshade family that bothers me too.  I am wondering if I had not eaten that potato, maybe I would have continued to feel better.

I am going to stop the aspirin for awhile to see if my blood pressure comes down.  Thank you again, Mary

Starbright,

I'm of the opinion that a good night's sleep does wonders for what ails us.
