Why would my rheumatologist suddenly want to also manage my osteoporosis disease?  Hi, I would think it handy to have only one doc to see about both diseases, my doc seems to know all about my RA, of course, and the OA in my neck (had xrays). Lynda , but not sure???

That is what they do. Be thankful you have an RD who cares enough to bring it to yoru attention. I think it is all inclusive. Perhaps your tests have revealed some abnormalities and they want to keep an eye on it..calcium/VIT D, and more and more calcium..it is your friend! *wink*

Rheums are internal med drs. first, so he is qualified to treat it.  I'd be happy about it - no worries that the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing.Hi Cathy, my RDs have always treated my osteoporosis and OA.  Like Suzanne said they're IM's first and they're more than qualified to treat.  I like it when my RD can handle more than just my RA. Keeps things nice and neat.  LindyJSNM - my former OBGYN screened for and treated osteoporosis, because she saw it as a condition that affects most women as they grow older.

Well, then this appointment worked out better than I ever dreamt, so far.  I didn't realize rheumatologists should be handling osteoporosis, and I am glad my family practitioner ordered a bone density scan up finally and diagnosed this new disease.  It certainly explains alot of the strange things happening, not RA-connected.  My swirling head is starting to straighten as I start to get more confirmed, and I am shocked that the rheumatologist suddenly kicked into gear.

We shall see how I do on a switch to Fosamax by the rheumatologist, off the 3 Boniva months by the family practitioner.  If I understood him correctly, in seven weeks I will have special osteoporosis blood tests? And Vit D blood tests.  I didn't realize there were blood tests for osteoporosis?  I thought it was only the bone scan.  Maybe I misunderstood, but I didn't get scheduled for another bone scan done by his facility.  My greatest fear, turning into a Flying Nun, is now moot.

Thanks for the input.  Cathy
