Going on Sulfasalazine -Questions | Arthritis Information

I felt that my RA/PA had slowed down and I've felt really great for the last month or so.  I've actually been able to golf. I golfed 9 holes on Monday, and on Tuesday I scrubbed my floors and waxed them.

Today I went to my RD's office for laser treatment of a psoriatic lesion on my leg and asked if I could make an appt. for sometime this week.  They asked what was wrong; about that time my RD walked up to the desk and listened.  He told me he would see me right away.

Anyway, my surgical knee is sore because I overdid it this week and stretched the tendons.  The other knee has OA, spurs, and my SynVisc injections are wearing off.  He suggested I let him inject the elbow.

He also added Sulfasalzine 500mg. 2 tablets twice a day as a DMARD.  For those of you that are taking this drug, can you give me some pointers and tell me how you're doing.  Of course I did the internet search and have all those answers but I just need some personal accounts.  Am going to have Remicade increased to 600 mg. every 6 weeks.

I guess I had 4 great weeks!!  Also, I ran out emoticon faces, I need more of them added.   Lindy

Hi Lindy,

Sorry things are not going well for you.  I take the same amount of sulfazalzine that you mentioned.  It was one of the first drugs I was put on and I don't feel it did anything for me.  I am actually going to see if it is one of the meds that I can eliminate since the enbrel is working so well.

I wish I could be more of a help.

Thanks Mary. I would want to come off a med. if I felt it wasn't doing me any good.  I'm so happy that Enbrel is helping you.  Hopefully, there are others out there who will answer.

take the sulfasalazine with food and don't panic if your pee changes to a weird color

Hi Buck, I always panic when I pee orange but you know I bet at Halloween every good witch pees orange!!!!

Thanks for the info.  I don't anticipate any side effects. I really anticipate that the MTX and Sulfa will form a miracle partnership and keep the flares at bay.  Once again I have to take my own advice and be patient.........ARGH!

I'm on sulfa at the moment. I've had horrible headaches so drink plenty. I've had thinning hair but fluffy stuff is coming back. I lost my appetite for 6 weeks (am at week 8 now), and last week was the first time I felt hungry. I've had boils and ulcers but they've all gone and the toxic orange pee is just considered 'normal' now.

There must be an upside.... ummmm, yes I'm hungry again and everything is settled.

But I sure hope it helps you.  I want you out there golfing and traveling.  How am I supposed to live vicariously if you aren't doing anything fun?

Seriously, I do hope it helps a lot.  I love to hear your Mexico stories.  Its my favorite vacation spot and always has been.  This year we are going for a week in Dec. to Cancun.  Mainly, because I have never been to the Carribean side.  We own a beautiful time share in the Grand Mayan chain so we go at least 1 week a year.  They have 8 different beautiful resorts in Mexico and I can't wait to visit every one.

Sorry, pain pills make me able to type, but unable to focus instead of ramble,

Take care.

Crispy, you can ramble anytime.....Hope you have a wonderful time in Cancun.  We won't be in Mexico again till next October.  We were going for the month of April but we decided to stay in the U.S.  I need to make sure that I get my infusions every 6 weeks.  Need to make sure disease is in control before I head south of the border.  Will give me a year to get all my little health ducks in a row.  I'll have some stories between now and then because we're headed cross country to Yellowstone in early summer.

It's funny I feel great this afternoon and evening.  I took MXT yesterday.  It always starts working within 24 hours.  I'll give Sulfa 6 months and if it doesn't take care of the breakthrough flares then I'm sure my RD will have something else up his sleeve.  Maybe by then I can increase MXT by 2.5mg.  I'll just wait and see.  Lindy
