I am going to be having a root canal and my dentsit started me on antibiotic today so of course i know i wont be taking my MTX this week. My question is so you think I can take it next week, after I complete the antibiotics?Gosh, I think that's a question for your RD.  Or someone that knows more than I do.  Good luck with the root canal.  it's not that bad

By the way Welcome Ranana!!!

Ranana, Hi and Welcome.  I agree with everyone else, call your RD.  I'm sure he has a set protocol and it really depends on what you've had done by the dentist and  your response to the antibiotic. Take Care.  LindyHey, I'm on MTX and I'm supposed to have a dental implant next week.  My dental surgeon didn't mention that I needed to take antibiotics or stop the methotrexate.  Are the antibiotics standard procedure?  Is it dose related?  I'm supposed to take 12.5 mg this week.

kweenb, I've had several root canals over the years and never had an antibiotic before, during or after.  Maybe they advise it when there's some other medical issue going on, like mitral valve prolapse.

Anyway, I agree with the others.  Talk to your RD.

I havent had any root canals in the past but I have had some extractions and every time Ive had them done I never had to go off the Mtx but was always given an antibiotic afterwards.  But I think I remember the Dentist saying that even if I wasnt on Mtx because of the RA he would have but me on the antibiotic anyways.  Good luck w/ the root canal..I would give your RD a call and see what he thinks you should do

Hey, it's dental day!

About the person getting the implant:  your surgeon NEEDS to talk to your RD immediately!  My office does tons of implants, and if you are an RA pt., you must get clearance first, determine if you are in an active stage of the disease, and then usually get of fyour drugs.  I have one pt. that is so bad that she can't come off her meds and needed extractions, so we had to wing it ( with MD approval)...not a good outcome.

As for the antibiotics, I'm of the old school:  if it won't kill you to take the antibiotics, why risk getting sick ( and for patients with a history of aortic replacements, etc.--dying) from a dental procedure, especially a cleaning?  The recommendations for premedication have changed significantly over the last twenty years that I have been practicing.  Now it is simply an antibiotic 1 hour prior to dental treatment.  But the ONLY one who can take that responsibility on is your MD/RD.  Do NOT  let your dentist make that decision, ever!  I love my field, but a DDS is not an MD, and they don't have the background to make that call. Period.  (Usually it is the hygienist who is informing the DDS about new treatment protocols for patients with involved medical historys)

Lisa:  and this is my personal soap box, has been for years!
