NAIL FUNGUS | Arthritis Information

Since being on MTX and Paquinil, i've had problems with nail fungus. I heard that people with suppressed immune systems sometimes have this problem. Anyone out there dealing with this?

Yes, I had that problem with one toenail.  The doctor said since I take mtx he didn't want me to take lamisil pills, but gave me lamisil cream.  I apply it to the affected toenail right after I shower.  Worked very well for me.

DONN,

Try the GRAPEFRUIT SEED EXTRACT. You will be very surprised and happy you tried it.

Hubby took Lamisil, which required liver labs (so definitely not good to mix with NSAIDS or mtx). My mom didn't want to take a med, so she put Vick's on her toenail.

The Vick's remedy is often mentioned by The People's Pharmacy column.

Hubby's cleared up. And came back when he stopped taking Lamisil. Now one whole foot is disgusting (I wear socks to bed.)

Mom's is fine. She had to apply it daily, and wait for the affected area to grow out. But it has never returned.

Hubby won't try it, don't know why.

 Suzane,

What is the Vicks remedy if you don't mind sharing? Thanks

You just rub Vick's on your toenail. My mom said she did it every night, and as the nail grew, the new part was fungus-free and she just had to wait for the bad part to grow enough to cut it off. So it took as long as it takes for your nail to grow out, but it never came back. She says she will do it again if she ever gets it again.

My mother tried that but it didn't work for her.

Sorry I spelled your name wrong

That Vicks vapor rub? Worth a try, I have couple of nails that look bad.

My primary told me to use vicks as well. Still working on it, but seems to be doing the trick!! Hubby read that Listerine works for toe nail fungus and has been using it.........and it's worked.  His toenail looks so much better.  LindyListerine is at least believeable. But vicks??!??! Really??? That's..............weird...........lol I guess if I ever get some fungus, I shall try it!

Well what if you use both the vicks and the listerine?

Lindy does hubby just put it the nail like once a day with a qtip or something?

I heard about Listerine, too. If Vick's didn't work for me, I'd try Listerine.

Maybe hubby will try that. I don't what he has against Vick's. He won't do Lamisil again, since it just came back when he stopped it.   He just uses a couple of Q tips dipped in Listerine.  He does it every evening.  I hate the smell of Listerine but if it helps his toe I can deal with the smell. It seems to be working.  L

Yeah i did Lamisil for 6 months. It was my big toe nail effected so it has taken forever (9 months) from the start of Lamisil to get nearly totally replaced. It was green to start with, then fell off, and the new growth came back while on the pills. Seems to be ok now. I didn't have any side effects. My sister used the vicks and it worked for her. I have a few toenails like that and as soon as I get back from my vacation I am going to start. That way I'll have nice toes for next spring. I'm glad to know this.  I haven't got a fungus problem, but you should see my mom's feet.  Fungus nails combined with bunions and a hammertoe.  Well, let's just say it isn't a pretty sight.
