confused: Prednisone v Methylprednisolone | Arthritis Information

Hi. I was diagnosed with RA last month. Since the first doctor I went to didn't spend much time with me and rushed me in and out, I decided to change doctors. The first doctor prescribed me "Prednisone 5 mg" and the second doctor (who I liked better) prescribed me with "Methylprednisolone 4 mg".  I think they are both generics of medrol.

My question is: what is the difference between "Prednisone 5 mg" and "Methylprednisolone 4 Mg" aside from the mg part? Is one medicine stronger than the other, so that they have to an extra mg in prednisone?

I read that the medicine is prednisone before it gets metabolized by the liver, than it changes to methylprednisolone. That sounds strange. Does anyone know that if that's correct? And if it is, is it better to have it Pre or Post liver metabolizized?

Thanks for your help.

there really is no difference.  Some small chemical differnece (ie pre and post metabolism)  and different inactive ingrediants.  But one isn't better than the other when it gets down to what you need it to do
