Enbrel Site Reaction | Arthritis Information

Hi everyone,

Just a quick question, I've been on Enbrel for a month now (25mg twice weekly) and everything is going fine, I'm feeling better already and finding the injections simple enough - the only thing is after my 7th injection I developed a site reaction - a hot, sore, red, bruise near the injection site.  I've been alternating between my right and left stomach and have injected in the opposite side to the reaction the 2 times since, but even so, both times the reaction site has got worse.

I know reaction sites are pretty common and I'm not too concerned, but is it going to continue to get worse with each injection or will it ease soon?  I thought I'd ask here because it seems a lot of people have experience with Enbrel.

Thanks for any help,

Moonie

Hmm ive had a couple site reactions and mine go away fairly quickly so I wouldnt worry too much about it. Also Enbrel has that awesome 800 number if you get too worried, ive called. Super friendly and was very helpful. good luck!

I dont think i have had a site reaction, but i have had bruising... lots of it!!! the bruises show up about a day after the shot and they are big, blue and reddish and sone are tender... I found out that it was becasue the enbrel was not warmed up enough.

I have a friend that is diabetic and "shoots up" 2x a day. She said that her doc told her that when you inject the colder stuff it shocks the area around the injection. That is what i got.. i started to warm up the syringe a bit better and no more bruising! I warm it up to body temp (or close to it) and not just room temp.

Moonie, I alternate legs and stomach for injections. Right leg, left leg, left of navel, right of navel. By then, a month has passed and I start all over. Could this work for you?

Mike

Thanks for your replies, I'm going to try both of those ideas!  The site is still red even though I haven't injected near it for 10 days now. It's very strange but I'm thinking maybe it was too cold, never thought about that before.  I'm fussy about injecting into my thigh as I have very skinny legs and don't like injections there at all, but I'm going to give it a try anyway. I'm sure it won't be all that bad!

Thanks again

Moonie I always take the injections in my stomach, but I make sure to warm up the enbrel for at least 30 minutes and no problems.  I prefer the stomach because there is no pain there when I inject myself.  meme

Not having much luck

Thanks again, Moonie

You might let a nurse give you the next one, so you can observe and make sure that you're using the best technique.

SOunds like you may not be getting it in at the right angle to get it deep enough into the skin.... esp if its leaking out.. are you going in at a 45 degree angle or almost flat to the skin??? (needs to be at the 45)

Good luck.. i would ask a nurse next time, or take your dose to the RD for help...

I get dark bruises directly after I inject, but never an itchy, raised reaction.  I would talk to your Rheumy or the 800 line about it.  I have also never had any ooze back out.  I always make sure I am going deep enough (45 degree angle, I just think of "half of a square corner" since I am bad with math lol.)

Lauras Dad here. I've seen her inject and she injects at almost 90 degrees definately not too flat and the needle goes all the way in. She is seeing her GP tomorow and will ask about the reaction. Next step is ringing the homecare nurse.Thankyou for your answers. Chris
