Antibiotics SUCK!! | Arthritis Information

I've been suffering from, according to the doctor, acute sinisitus for over a month. It took my face feeling like concrete to get me to the doctors. 10 days worth of Amoxycillin (big dose) has left me with extreme thrush and no relief. I saw emergency doctors on Saturday and was given Doxycycline. I still have no relief. I am steaming (not the mad type... well yess that too

Has anyone got ideas of any herbally type things that can be taken with sulpha, thyroxine, zirtek? Paracetamol not touching the discomfort and cant take anything with aspirin in it. I've seen that a lot of you have frequent sinus infections so am open to absolutely anything at present.

Sarah -

Did they take you off the suppressents?  Because doxy is a form of AP - and you are going to 'herx' like hell as the medicine works on the sinuses.  And that could take months.

Grapefruit Seed Extract.  Oil of Oregano.  Garlic (know you can't take that).  You'll herx on these but it kills stuff.  You MAY not need the surgery then.  It's up to you what you're willing to do to avoid that.

Whole Lemon/Olive Oil drink will cut the herxing and inflammation.  I'd do that 2X a day.

Edited because I swore!

Pip!39377.4171412037Have you tried a sinus rinse?  My son gets sinusitis every spring and needs to do a sinus rinse for about 8-10 weeks.  As long as he does this, he doesn't have any problems.  Maybe this will work for you too.  MMMmmmmm....doxycycline! This could be the best thing that ever happened to you, except for the aforementioned herxing part. I'm always a real crybaby about that.

I just wanted to jump in and stress the importance of taking probiotics when on antibiotics, or at least eating a lot of live culture yogurt.

And to also empathise with your problem. I hope you feel better soon!
My DH and DD get sinus infections and they are usually given an antibiotic sinus spray to use while they're also taking the pills. Maybe that would help you. PS my DD is having a great time in Scotland, she travels every weekend, has sent back some beautiful pictures.

use a 50/50 solution of saline and alcholol NOT ALCoHOL!!!!!!!!

talk to the pharmasist they will show you where it is , it is pronounced like alcolol no h sound my sons pedisatrician said to mix it 50/50 with like saline nose spray and spray in sinusus with your head tipped back hold it as long as you can dont swallow and then bloe=w it out do each side every day for a week and it will c=lear the infection . you can look it up on the web It smells like eucaliptis (very bad speller)

I was taught by a friend whos' sister is a ear, nose, and throat specialist to wash my sinuses with warm salt water. Using a gizmo that looks like a kid's teapot while standing over the sink, you put the spout in one nostril with your head tilted to the side. Breath through your mouth the entire time. The water will run through your nose to your sinuses and then out the other nostril.

Yucky and can be messy but neither hubby nor I have had to go to the dr with sinus trouble since we started this.  At the first sign of infection, painful dryness, or sinus headache we start in with washes(up to 4 times a day).

It's called a Neti pot (traditionally used in India); Sinucleanse is one brand here in the States.  Check out the website and google "neti pot." I'm sure you have something similar in the UK.  It is generally used with warm, buffered saline solution, at about the same concentration of salt as is found in the body (about 0.9%).  Too much or too little salt will cause burning, stinging pain.

The sinuses have poor blood perfusion, so it often takes a few weeks of antibiotics to clear the infection.  If the infection is still bad, tell your doctor to do a culture.  It is possible that the pathogens in your sinuses are immune to the antibiotics you are taking.  It is possible to have viral or fungal sinus infections, and these will NOT be helped by antibiotics.  They will be helped with a sinus rinse.

Do not delay treatment (and do NOT assume this is a "herx"); untreated sinus infections can eat away bone and even cause a brain abscess.

Sarah honey,

I am sorry to hear you are not doing so well, sweetie. I know sinusitis so well and it is really hard to shift once it takes a hold and my god, it can make you miserable.

Go to your pharmacy and ask for a saline spray. Basically all it is in a pump bottle with saline in it and you shoot it up your nose and it clears stuff out. One of the most effective things I have found for sinisitis. Once you have a couple of the bottles I can give you a recipe to make it up yourself really cheap.

Love ya but you know that. Hang in there, sweetie.  I agree with the sinus rinse. It may do the trick.

It took six weeks on minocin for my sinus/nose ulcers to clear up.  I also have a RX ointment that I still religiously use every day in both nostrils, and only because it makes me feel safer.

Is your doctor concerned that you have this (because of what JasmineRain wrote)?  Have your doctors warned you about a brain abcess or losing bone?  I am just curious because I had chronic sinusitis for decades and bleeding nose ulcers for the past five years, and was only given an ointment, nobody even looked at them.

When I got extreme Thrush from antibiotics I was rx'd Nystatin mouth rinse along with Diflucan and eventually the Thrush healed.  I also get numerous sinus infections (have a bad one now) and rinse my sinuses which helps a lot.  Did the emergency Dr's give you anything for the Thrush.  Isn't Thrush a yeast overgrowth due to antibiotics?

I also stay on Probiotics all the time and have had no more Thrush or yeast infections from the antibiotics for sinus infections.

I sure hope and pray that you feel better soon.

Great catch, Bonny - I totally missed the thrush/yeast.  Big bad!  That needs to be treated ASAP!

Pip

Fungal infections (such as yeast) are a common cause of sinusitis, and are frequently overlooked.  Antibiotics will do absolutely nothing to help these infections.

People who take immunosuppresant drugs are at increased risk of complicated sinus infections as well.

Please do not delay seeking treatment.  Seek a second opinion (preferably from an ear/nose/throat specialist) if you are not getting better SOON.

Genitian violet? for thrush, I cannot remember exactly.

I am so sorry!  I have had severe sinus problems for most of my life.  They got so bad that my asthma was becoming uncontrolled.  I finally decided to have sinus surgery.  It was as nearly bad as I thought it would be.  The most painful part was the septum surgery (not related to the sinus problem, but it caused breathing problems)  I am so glad I did it.  I got very familiar with washing out my sinuses since you do that several times a day post op

Awww thanks guys soooo much info.

Pip, no - was not told to stop supha

Jasmine, no - have not been told about the bone eating... bloody hell not something else to worry about

Bonny, unfortunately its not oral thrush but am eating live yogurt by the bucket full and using canestan cream for the swelling, peeling etc (dont want to put you off your tea!

I will get a neti pot and start washing with saline solution. Cordy will be in touch as normal.

I have handed in letter requesting re-referral to ENT, but this is the NHS and may take a while. However, I will be straight back if this latest lot of stuff doesnt do the trick.

Jaw bones both sides killing me, dont want to talk or move them, face still swollen, feels prickly underneath the skin. (husband happy with the no talking bit

Again, many thanks for all your helpful caring and sharing.
