MTX and with a cold??? | Arthritis Information

I take my MTX on Fridays and am wondering if I should not take it tomorrow due to catching a pretty good cold in the past couple of days.

Is this a reason not to take it? Or is it when you are sicker? If you're not supposed to, when do you resume taking it?

Things that make you go hmm...Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Give your doctor's office a call.  It's probably a common question.

I took MTX for 3 yrs and never stopped it for a cold...didn't seem to make any difference as far as I could tell.  Some doctors seem to be more concerned than others.  You should talk to your doctor since everyone is different..some people seem to be more prone to infections than others while on MTX.

I asked my doctor this very question and he said to stop the MTX only for sinus infections or other severe infections.  So, I'm assuming if I get a cold I should just continue as normal unless it gets much worse.  But I'd still call the doctor if I were you.  He/she may have a different opinion.

Over the 15 years I've been taking mtx, I've never stopped when I have a cold and have never had a problem.

If you're worried about it though, give your doctor and call and see what he/she says.

Hope you feel better soon,

Kelly

My DR....If you are sick, no MTXMy doc also said that if I'm sick......no MTX. I'm currently getting over a sinus infection and on antibiotics so I haven't had MTX for (3) weeks. < =text/>_popupControl(); Opinions vary from doc to doc on this one as you can tell lol.  Your best bet is to call your docs office and see what they say.  My doc says no mtx if I am on antibiotics or running a fever.  Thanks guys! That's wild that some docs say yes and some say no. Just talked to my RD's office...said it would be best to skip this week. Not looking forward to that.

Ta2d, how are you feeling since being without mtx for three weeks? I can only imagine.

I just recently got over a head cold.  Kept taking the mtx, no problems at all.

For some MTX slows the healing process. I've had a cold type symptoms for weeks now. Last week when I say my RD he said it wasn't anything serious but went ahead and prescribed me a z-pack to help me get over a cough that had continued to progress for weeks. They try to stop it before it goes to far.

He told me to stop the MTX until it cleared up. It always helps me get better faster if I stop it especially if it reaches my chest. A bad cough can cause all kinds of problems in my case. I always seem to end up with my back out if I develop Bronchitis. The constant coughing action is hell on my back and ribs! It's worth missing a couple weeks of MTX to avoid that.

Alot depends on the person and how you respond to illness.

This is a question I've asked my rheumy quite often.  He says it is still ok to take mtx while having a cold. It takes a while for the MTX to get out of your system, for me it takes a month, missing one week shouldn't make much of a difference. My dr told me to stop taking it if I catch something.   It takes me longer to catch the cold, but then it lasts twice as long as whoever brought it home had it.

In short, after being off of the MTX for (3) weeks I feel like crap...lol. My knees, fingers, wrists and both shoulders have been bothering me very badly. I can't wait to get back on it. Unfortunately, I have another week and a half on antibiotics so I'm off of the MTX until the antibiotics are done.

Oh that's a bummer All 3 of the rheumies I have been to told me NO mtx when I had a cold with a cough or an infection.  They all said this was do to a possibilty of a lung embolism.
