Voice Question ?????? | Arthritis Information

Hey guys i have a very weird question.  I am not sick, i feel fine except for the pain from my Rheumatoid Arthritis, but I am having trouble with my voice.  It fades in and out and sometimes it is not even there at all.  Do u think it is possible that it is part of my RA.  I mean i have been swelling in all kinds of places.  By the way my kids are loving this.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you all.

Thanks again,

Cyndi

Some RAers have reported voice box problems.  But when I checked with my ENT, he told me that I had a problem with dryness associated with getting older.  So I'd check it out!

Good luck!

I'm constantly gulping water because of dry throat and mouth.  I was told by my eye doctor, that due to the fact that I have RA, I'm not a candidate for laser surgery.  He said that dry eyes, caused by the RA, hinders the healing process and causes complications.  I wonder if it's the same with the throat and mouth...dryness due to RA.  I never thought of that.  But my voice also cracks, comes and goes, etc.  I'm often asked if I have a cold, or if I'm sick, because of my voice.

I don't know if its the RA either but I just mentioned to my husband the other day that I seem to be losing my voice a lot more lately.  Maybe there is a connection.

thanks guys for the info u gave, but i still have not found out anything more.  This is day # 2 of my voice coming and going.  Thanks for trying though.

Love,

Cyndi

Have you been having especially bad heartburn lately?  If so, it can cause you to loose you voice also . . . .

Just a thought Cyndi-I've decided that almost ANYTHING can happen with this ridiculous disease! It does sound like maybe it could be Sjogren's..I know there is medication that helps with that, so might want to check with your doc. Good luck and let me know what you find out. Mine does it more as i have to cut back on prednisone, so i assume that it is inflammation from either RA or allergies. Sometimes it just helps me to know that I'm not the ONLY one going thru something!(Not that i want everyone else to be miserable, too....!)

Cindi I have had a voice problem with my RA. one time i had a paralyzed vocal chord, really lost my voice that time for 8 weeks. Second time was inflammation, from th eRA probably took 2 weeks to get normal voice again. Have you seen an ENT? I was checked for everything , including throat cancer before they came up with the RA reason it was happeneing. PLease get it checked out. Good luck!

I remember this topic coming up before on the posts, and discussion led to the fact that our throat/neck has joints that may become inflammed and causing the hoarse sounding voice.  I believe my Dr. confirmed it when I talked to him about it. I'm constantly drinking water to lubricate my throat and mouth. I think it's from the metho., but it may also be because of the RA and I probably have a slight case of Sjorgens too. Sometimes, I can't even get words out good. I think it's all part of this RA we have......

I have had problems with my voice from the RA. I used to be a choir leader at church, and had to give it up because I never knew when my voice would go. Not to mention it would get pretty embarrassing when you are trying to lead the congregation and your voice start cracking or go altogether. I agree with everyone else, you need to talk to you doc about it because there are so many other things that it could be.

My MD told me that my voicebox has joints too and it can be affected. Sometimes instead of knowing it sounds raspy, I try and think of it being sexy.

Very good question I think.  Surprised at how many replied they also had voice problems.  My voice has gotten so scratchy and weak I don't sing anymore and doing something like calling my dog is a huge strain.  Thank goodness I can still whistle!

I always thought it was caused by acid reflux, but I guess it could have been RA as well.  Now I'm not sure.  PatM
