flu shots | Arthritis Information

Hello again
The big topic around my office has been "Are you getting  a flu shot?"
I had thought that if my immune system was depressed due to pred or PMR that I should not get one. Haven't consulted with my rheumy as yet so I though I'd ask the group.
BTW -- I am normally quite healthy and almost never get sick (last time I recall getting anything resemble the flu was 10 years ago and it lasted 4 days!)

HI again
didn't mean to post an already discussed topic-- just saw the previous post

my apologies

Jeff

Jeff,

Getting the flu shot is a good idea.  I got mine last Thursday.  The virus that is in the flu shot is a "dead virus" which will not make you sick but your body will recognize it as a virus and produce antibodies against that strain of flu.  Because your immune system is suppressed right now if you are exposed to a cold or the flu you can get really sick.  Hope this helps you out.

I have had a very difficult time deciding about the flu shot. However, I work
in a healh center and all the docs there say I really need to get it given the
lowered immunity from pred. They recommend late Nov to ge the best
coverage. I think I have decided at this point to get it.
pgranyone have any complications from flu shots,,,,,got mine on Wednesday in arm, couldn't get out of bed next day, lower back, hip, nerve pain big time.....moist heat, rest, could it have been the shot, we are expecting hurricane NOEL to-morrow, or am I being affected by weather????help                  rose Got my flu shot on Monday. No effects at all, the same as last year. I know
that some people react to the shots even without compromised immune
systems.
Hope you're better soon, Rose.

GeralynI had a reaction similar the last time I had a flu shot, that was 1 reason I
didn't want to get it this year. It only lasted 1 day, and the med people tell
me the next day is too quick for the reaction. However I believe that was
what it was.

Let us know how long it lasts... ma influence my decision to have the shot.
Then again, 1 day of that is better than a week or 10 days of flu!
pgrI wavered about getting the shot, but finally decided to have one. I
experienced some discomfort for a day or two, which I felt was the result of
the shot, but quickly came back to normal, well, what is normal for now. So
I am on the side of getting the flu shot.

This was the second year of flue shot. Both times without any problems whatsoever. Before getting the shot, I had to answer some questions about allergies. I remember they especially asked if I had any egg allergy, which I donīt.

hurricane NOEL passed Saturday night big time, high winds heavy rains, some thunder  & lightning, lots of damage,  however yesterday, Monday, I was back to NORMAL,   still have some pain but not like the week before and during the storm....I will have flu shot next year, but I plan on being prepared for the next storm, just go to bed until it's over.

what a strange episode....just wanted to let you know

regards   rose

Rose,

Glad to hear that you are doing better. I hope you didn't have any damage from the hurricane. Isn't it strange how the weather can affect us? It's not so bad for me now, but several years ago, I would hurt all over every time there was a low pressure system, and as soon as the storm got to us, I would be fine. It's awful being at the mercy of the weather when you're not even out in it.
